arose in Newmarket in A school principal was relieved of his duties Some of the reasons for his departure are con tained in a news story in another part of this For the past two weeks The Eras news staff has listened to numerous reasons why the man lost his job things he did while he was in New market and hose he did before coming to New market We will not list these slanderous and mali cious accusations and suppositions because to do so might lend credence to them The unfortunate part of this incident is that man is unable to defend himself or even laugh at these wild accusations The reason being they were not said to his face but behind his back whispered leering tones Since he was unable to defend himself some one else should have That someone is the York County Board of Education which should not have buried its head in the sand hoping the incident would blow over When the man was relieved of his duties ie Board should have and immedi ately made its decision public and the reasons why the decision was made But now its too late The man will leave the community with the whispers and sneers following him forever Old Ontario No shortage of provincial election issues there is no shortage of provincial election in York Region this campaign The Region covers most of two provincial I corner of a third The south of the Region is in York Centre riding most rfthe north The move placed an ineffective county structure with strongly centralized administration and left councils with less authority than before Large provincial grants called by the pro- vince transitional Readers ERA This space is reserved for the comments opinions and drawings of The Eras read ers Please feel free to send a- long All we ask is that you include Movie ratings VandenTillaarts It in The Era Sept complains lime we the public did something about it ELIZABETH SAVAGE P P Sharon Thanks to staff i that the operation been performed at Childrens Hospital There is something Another heavy joins Bashers entourage haskell Behind the Algonlcian Scene reproduced The following appeared at The Eras newsroom this week obvious errors and bungles and confusion con tained in this diatribe are typical of the Basher Groves Camp I commend to the reader the mix- up between the Squire and the Baron for It also points out that still another scound rel has joined the entourage of Groves ruffians Mr VandenBergh and I will be at Fairy comprised of managers public relatio men writers chauffeurs skin divers and trum peters The word this week is Bashers Dave Haskell It would appear that your publisher Fingers Haskell aptly named because he has his fingers into everything has again chosen to insult and degrade certain members of the public through the medium of the press As a result of Fingers Newsroom Notes which were published in The Era last week I have been requested by Squire has no intention of letting anyone least of all Fingers dump him during the water joust at Fairy Lake during the town Autumn Festival his crafty colleague Sink Em VandenBurgh and that Barons signature obtained on a document was obtained only because he was under the influence of a drug Fingers Haskell is obviously using the Era as nothing else but a front to cover up his devilish deeds which he imposes on the most unsuspecting residents of this town With regard to Squire Groves one and only defeat at the hands of Fingers he will state that he was tricked by Fingers and Sink Em and that wet leaves were placed into his boat causing the Baron to slip and fall when making the decisive bunt with his jousting pole Since this dirty business came to light the Baron has had no problem in beating Fingers and and decisive defeat Fingers also makes reference to his Jumping Fish Trick a load of nonsense thats for sure Perhaps after loosening all the beer bottle lops from the bottles and consuming t the Fingers is the one thats stunned and The day of reckoning is near and from the training camp of Squire Groves I am happy to report that all is well His jousting partners all confirm that the champ is in good shape and a very dangerous opponent To conclude the Squire has already notified the Prevention of Pollution Authority that he intends to deliber ately pollute the waters of Fairy Lake with the devilish body of none other than MR FINGERS HASKELL Torpedo dynamite load lipped pole and its your round Intermediator JOHN A HANSON BILL GAMBLE The many uses of your month By Barry Rosenberg The clock in the Post Office tower gently tolls seven oclock on a warm Wednesday evening in August In a meeting room above the New market Town Offices about a dozen men greet each other warmly They talk briefly reviewing iotes on the table before them At the head of the table the chairman calls the meeting to order and the murmur of voices ceases as all eyes turn to the speaker Well begin on my left he smiles and introduce ourselves stating our interest In the glory Each has attended purely out of love for Newmarket and his fellow citizens They come from all walks of life merchants laborers professional men and civic employees Some represent senice clubs The Legion Lions Optimists Others arc just interested parties but ill share a common desire and goat To put Newmarket on the map with the best town festival Ontario has ever seen with charity as the benefactor The Newmarket Algonkian Aut umn Festival What does it take to put together a Festival like this Work Decisions Discussions dialogue responsibility desire and more work Even the name of the festival had to be determined thro ugh research Research conducted by a man who is a transplant from overseas who has sunk roots into Newmarket as deep as any native sons Hundreds of years ago he reports the Indians who lived in this territory were called the This was an umbrella name cov ering a number of tribes whose heritage over lapped Main Street lies on the site of their trail to the trading centre which Is now Toronto Later when trade developed on this spot the Indians named it the New Market As the meeting progresses the individuals around the table report the status of their var ious responsibilities The makes notes and issues reminders as the many events in the Festival are timed located advertised and scheduled An The n besides being sometimes thought of as he thing butler wouldnt melt in is accord ing to psychoanalytic theory the chief organ with which we first made contact with reality With the mouth we first tested and accepted food for nourishment as well as for pleasure We soon found out however that it could also he used for depositing distasteful formula on chins bibs the tops of babychairs and freshlywaxed It was with the mouth that we first began show our recognition of life opening it to frantic yells whenever we felt hungry thirsty tired frightened uncomfortably wet or just plain bored and closing il to stubborn silence when ailed upon to boost papas prestige by enter taining visitors with a few newlyacquired ad libs Out of the mouth came words like mama dada googoo and wee wee while into it went thumbs teething- rings bottle caps old shoes toy rattles mothers noses and the corn ers of sleeping covers Later in life the mouth became the instru ment without which a promise could never be born and therefore die of a broken neck and resolutions would be denied the privilege of proving weakness rather than strength Ostensibly the mouth has referred to as the thing which moulds the shape of our destiny but destiny in turn reverses the procedure by moulding shapes of our mouths It may em bellish them with lines of great happiness health good humor a gratifying love and an adequate regard for piety or it may mar them with tiny rivulets of sadness loneliness bitterness faith Iessness and a cynical opinion of life It takes but a few seconds and one sharp slap for us to learn to open our mouths But it requires a whole lifetime and many hard knocks for us to learn to keep them shut And during our long association with them we at various times come to detest them worship them ignore them hi ashamed of them and consider them to be the finest source of information available to the world at large Without the mouth speakers dinners lec tures radio TV comedy shows and the opera would all he unknown There would be no lip stick to smear our collars no sparkling smiles to lead us astray and no one would know the fear of the dentists chair Words like loquacious articulate eulogy and many others would be incongruous and we would be spared the tag of big mouth be found in which to put love no cries of joy no seasonal salutations pleasant ring of children laughter no freedom of speech no two minutes silence on each Ite- mombrancc Day no words of praise for work well done Without them we could not taste the earths delicious fruit or drink the water from its mountains or breathe the fragrant air of spring or exchange the tender essential words of love that make this quaint old globe of ours revolve Taken then on face value and the pun is meant to be overlooked the mouth may bring us moments of bliss or moments of gloom or bath depending on how we use it On reflection it might be as well to make It the subject and not the ruler And just as a passing thought without the mouth great past entertainers like Char- lie McCarthy Mortimer Snerd and Effie Clinker might still be growing in some distant forest Belles iki of York JMtluwimJ r aSk 1 ly it By Robert While Two young men from The Chancellors Car Club offer a family car rally The festival area at the foot of Main Street Here more discussion leads to decisions on locating the various attractions I tag along to see if I can add anything to the effort I have the point of view of a newcomer to Newmarket with the cold dirty fate of Toronto still fresh in my mind So I give the committee some insights into how it all appears to a city boy think it helped them appreciate what a truly great thing they are doing for the town The wage asked and received by members the Newmarket Algonkian Autumn Festival committee Is the highest pay a man can get Personal satisfaction Repay the
