is not well on the secondary education front Ive attended several meetings lately where teachers instead of administrators trustees have been the participant aback by occasional flashes of bitter BETWEEN THE LINES Evelyn Buck Dr Benjamin told teachers they must strive to provide a warm human loving environment for their students A few minutes later in spontaneous reaction to a query he advised them to learn karate to de fend themselves Sam Chapman later commented the sit uation is not desperate which was not deny ing that there is a situation Judge Clair Morrison recently reempha sized the legal right of a teacher of parental authority to use force to maintain discipline He said that if teachers did not have this right our schools would be in greater chaos than they are What chaos I have heard no hint at school hoard level that our schools are in chaos If they are why have we not been told Last week Mr Norman a drug counsellor spoke of parents in the same harsh terms as Dr Schlesinger Neither is a teacher but they must have picked up their was a question from the floor at the doctors meeting about parents being asked to pay so much per hour for babysitting Is that how teachers perceive their role If so what has gone wrong Last week the Ontario Secondary School s Teachers Federation held meetings to alert the public to the impact of provincial ceilings ion education expenditures They spent a great deal on advertising and even talked of a days walkout to protest the ceilings Thats pretty strong stuff from teachers But their arguments were weak Theyre anxious that programs that have been planned may be curtailed And theyre worried about teacherstudent ratio Why are teachers so alarmed What is it theyre not telling us the champion- PRESCRIPTIONS CALLED FOR AND utter madness for school boards and the provincial government to attempt process every student in Ontario through the secondary school level Some do not have the ability and others lack the inclination I may he a copout parent But its my view that by the age of a youth is old enough to be the architect of his He is not a child to be coaxed and harried and subject to reasonable force to maintain discipline I do not believe that a school can ha die that function with satisfactory results without prohibitive costs Nor do I believe that students who are ious about their studies should be distracted by those who are not academically inclined Up to now Ive always thought about It from the students angle Theres no doubt In my mind that half of them dont belong In school They dont want to be there They are wasting their own time the teachers time and their years on that point Ive never thought about it from a teach ers point of view It must be hell trying to teach in such a situation But why dont they speak up Why pussyfoot around the issue Could it be theyd rather fight for more funds for everexpanding programs than risk cutting down job opportunities for their own
