ANSWERS TO DR DISCRIMINATION CHARGE The Era NewmirhetAirorBKwlck Mt Wed April mi Parent OR Halt pretty happy Dear Editor Hie slander Dr Halt used on prominent n in this uncalled for These give their time and mon ey voluntarily to help our sons through the long winter by organiz ing and operating minor hockey They should be commended on the job they are doing instead of torn apart in front of the public We have been at the arena every week and if Dr does not ap preciate what has been done for his son there are GOD boys that look We do not feel that the hour a child spends at the arena should in terfere with his atten dance at church No one spends an entire Sunday morning in church Concerned parents of three young hockey players MR AND MRS ED WARD As I was the coach of the Newmarket Nov ice A Team dur ing the past hockey year log minor hockey and the complications for his son Graham points in his had been cut from Nov ice A Allstar Team be cause he didnt come out to a Sunday morning try out I must make a very strenuous objection to this statement as Dr Halts boy was cut from the Novice A Allstar Team because In my op inion be was not a good enough hockey player to make the team and I personally told Dr Dr J The fact that him regarding his sons ability to make the Novice A Team has lead me to question much other rationale used in his presentation When dealing with issues any type of issues one must be willing to listen to think about and appre ciate if not accept peo ples point of view I cannot speak to the issue of Sunday hockey s comments regard- my personal Visions of sugar plums Board of Education trustees may be excused for quietly chortling over the adverse publicity local politicians have been receiving lately School trustees are nothing if not discreet Not for them the undignified hurlyburly of slam- bang politics Never shall it be said in York that the sacred cause of education is degraded by arguments on cost not by the trustees at any rate but the million and only million would be levied against the taxpayers No names no packdrill who said it has distant family high places million said Mr Last years county budget was million A little over S3 million was levied against propertyowners This year Mr says there may even be a decrease in taxes These grants didnt just drop from the sky They didnt come easily We had to make representation for them Dare we suggest that rather than flying off to Bermuda to give a paper on regional administration Mr might have been better employed directing other boards of public Mind you hospital board people tend to be the same kind as school board the dignityoftheir highercalling type of thing Not like those vulgar political types theres no telling what next theyre likely to say out loud and in public too just to make themselves look like heroes I could be wrong 1 suppose the much- heralded provincial election may not be the order to make a point Dr has misconstru ed andor misunderstood the reason his son did not make the Novice A Team When a hockey team is formed end that team has a coach a team can only one coach at one time that coach must make decisions concerning many child ren who are trying for a berth However in the case of the selection of the boys for the Novice A Team I can only add that as this was my first year involved with Newmarket Minor Hockey in any form I was not familiar with any of the boys or any of the past history of the Sunday hockey ques tion Therefore my sel ection of boys was made solely and I repeat sole ly on the basis of abil ity In summary what is disturbing to the writer is the effect of many of Dr Halts statements on the children participat ing in minor hockey in cluding his own son It is an individuals to question existing no hockey in Newmar ket for four seasons and have never had nor would I tolerate the type of interference or pressure mentioned in accurate in respect to excluded from the try- press that certain people are being discriminated against in Newmarket Minor Hockey This is was picked by two men who are accused of be- incompetent We wanted the best teams possible and acted accor dingly We assembled the best we saw Sat urday House League Hockey and had out to practice We div ided them by sweater co lour and numbers and picked by number and not by name as m boys were not known personally at this time As most people know not expected some were dropped and others brought up to replace should be clarified that his lack of available time was part of the reason only If Mr does not want to reveal to the public the son for resigning from the executive of minor hockey this is his pre rogative to do so The point mat must be em phasized is the fact that there is no real discre pancy between the rea son he allegedly gave Finally it should be clarified that son Gra ham was cut from the novice A team on the third and final cut which possibly Just happened to be on a Sunday morning The CANADAS LARGEST DRY provincial Department of Education Two weeks ago they were informed theyd be expected to pay for essential data to calculate education levies The provincial assessment department wants a fee of and notice to produce the information Yorks hospital boards would probably be delighted to learn how to charm funds like an Raster bunny hunt from provincial coffers Our hospital bed shortage has long been at crisis stage For five years the province lias procrastinated in making funds available for urgently needed expansion Plans have had to be repeatedly revised at heaven knows the cost in architects fee not to mention constantly rising costs for building Still the boards are stalled in their efforts to provide facilities which could difference between life and death Later it was decided that the region would offer an area planning service which would be paid for by the participating municipalities Fortynine thousand dollars was calculated as the cost of the service that also was approved by council Eventually there would have been revenues from the municipalities to balance the expenditures The two budget sums totalled 226000 At the last council meeting it was disclosed that the province had made available immediately for planning And a promise in had been received for another DAVID J HART R Newmarket Veenttra Dear Editor In the March edition of The Era cer tain
