20 Hockey school puts fun and learning together the best thing3 about those bygone days wa the cold Saturday mornings when I played shinny on the natural ice rink a few blocks from home There were lota of other guys there who had the same idea We would sit shivering in the snow and lace up our skates as best we could Then the fun would start It was only vaguely similar to hockey with 15 or guys on each team I was and am a terrible skater but I had fun I am sure it would not stick so clearly in my mind if that were not so my nostalgia serves a purpose I think much of the spontaneity and fun has gone out of hockey as it is presently organ ized I am not saying that we should go back to those long lost glorious days of natural ice There is no way that the past can be relieved What I suggest is a new way to put fun back into hockey It is being done in the Borough of alongside the existing framework of minor hockey organization The plan a pet project of Recreation and Parks Commissioner John Keaj calls for the crea tion of a hockey school The school is set up so that the boys have one hour a week of ice time The hockey skills arc taught and practiced for the first Newmarket boy freshman star at Yale Univ By Don Bernard Era Sports writer minutes then the boys play oldfashioned shinny for the last part of the hour The school has been a smashing success in Scarboro where boys were involved in it this veil It is so successful that the minor hockey people in are setting up then- own schools next year The school is held for boys from the ages of 612 ire divided iccording to ability not age There are boys on the ice at one time and four exnert instructors All the hockey skills are taught skating regular minor hockey programs He feels the boys receive far more instruction this way because they get more actual ice time The school lasts for nine and costs eight dollars A study has been done of par ents in the Scarboro area and there is very widespread support for the oneyearold pro- to have with the of the Newmarket- Aurora Keswick and the minor hockey programs that provided here My comments are not intended to reflect i the integrity and dedication of the people hockey They do a fine job and a relatively thankless one at that Yet their efforts would I think be even more fruitful if hockey started from the premise of fun rather than competition It would be better for a boy to have six years of instruction and shinny under his belt then he would be ready to play highly organized competitive hockey by the age of Now at 2 Locations FAMILY TIRE CENTRE Come Now Save Bruno and Dave Your Manager SUPER SAVINGS SUMMER WINTER TIRES Buy Hire at List Price Get Your 2nd Tire For
