Doug Lucas a tribute Buck BETWEEN THE LINES A couple of weeks ago I was in a onesided argument about what the hell I think Im doing in this space As a politician youre dead now and youre gonna stay dead unless you learn some of the rules You dont criticize Before you would criticize anyone else criticize yourself It was hard to defend my self Partly because I wasnt get ting a word in edgewise partly be cause he wasnt gloating over me he was furious with me and partly because he was right I had said things out loud that others had the sense to whisper I could have claimed that the limit of my criticism was an exam ple of heroic restraint on my part Many s the political scene I been tempted to lampoon but allowed discretion to play the better part of valor I was reminded of one last Friday night At every major convention or conference a minister of religion is invited to open the proceedings with a prayer Delegates bow their heads while the Reverend calls up on the Deity to bless their deliber ations with wisdom- Like freshly- scrubbed fouryearolds in Sunday school their suitably sombre looks discourage even a humorous refer ence to incongruity Ive often thought it would be more fitting to beseech Himself to turn His head away for a couple of days lest He lose faith in hu man nature But to make such a comment would only serve to deep ly offend their righteousness The exercise will no doubt continue for many years yet with the prayer having little relation to the reality Last night I watched a scene of opposite character The occasion was a private farewell party for the members past wardens and de partment heads of the last council of York by the Warden and Commissioners With few illusions of my own significance in history I was made aware of ray role as representatives of all those who had gone before by the presence of one man Doug Lu cas the county solicitor As a young lawyer he joined the firm of Herb Lennox then county solicitor That was in the year I was born Six years later he himself was elected county so- Twelve years after in he watched over the separation of the county from Metro to form the present jurisdiction This year with a total of years of service and in the dying hours of the county Mr Lucas has chosen to bow out Friday night a formal presen tation was made to him and his wife Muriel whom he first brought to the county dances as a girl of To be a member of County Council for only a few weeks was to know and feel the respect and af fection in which this man is held His own regard for the county her people and her peoples representa tives is a truth without question When he was asked for coun sel it seemed that he had forgotten nothing he had learned throughout the years With his quiet voice and expressive hands he would dig back in his memory for precedent after precedent that would enable us to make a good decision Never did he step beyond the bounds of his fun ction Counsel was what was asked and counsel was what he gave Jack who has known and worked with him longer than anyone else was asked to give the tribute Jack has a reputation of be ing something of a dictator Hes a hardheaded engineer of Aberdon- extraction not given to open ex pression of sentiment He told of the great respect for Mr Lucas throughout the pro vince Of how even he himself is sought as an expert because of his long association with the man Jack hinted at stories both funny and sad that could be told struggled for words that would allow him to his feelings yet hide how deeply affected he was by the end of a long stimulat ing and warmly satisfying associa- He managed to maintain some semblance of calm but only at the expense of not expressing the many thoughts and emotions which were obviously in bis heart So Im writing them Its eas ier than pushing words past a lump in your throat and tears flowing without restraint Jack says it would fake a book to tell all many Instances of Invaluable service rendered
