2 Ike Era Oat We November 25 Ryerson sale fails to raise trustees ire AURORA sale of Press to an American firm failed to distress York Comity Board of Education on Monday night despite an urgent plea from one of its trustees to condemn the transaction a frightening picture of increasing American domination Trustee Conrad Thompson pre sented a resolution asking the hoard to support those officials who are moving to suppress the sale of Letter from Santa SANTA VILLE NORTH POLE Nov 25 1970 My dear dear children Thank you so very much for finding my Magic Fairy and sending her home to me Did you see my beautiful new suit she made me Oh with just a little wink of her eyes there it was just the perfect size and everything and only one day before the parade too It was too bad she couldnt stay in Newmarket a little longer then she and Jack Frost could have given us some lovely snow But she thought my suit was a little more important I mean we were afraid no one would know me in a purple suit I bet you wouldnt would you The parade was just fine with out snow wasnt it Those clowns were so funny werent they And did you see the funny tall tall clown sitting high up in the air in the big machine Oh goodness he was silly wasnt he And the bands played so loud didnt they and everything was so very pretty and painted lots of bright col ors I just love it when I have my parade and can see you and all the pretty things too Well Sweethearts it was lovely to see you all again and I cant wait to see you again Christmas Eve Of course you wont see me then will Be good children till I have a minute to write you another letter must go now until the next time His colleagues however didnt agree Mr Thompson quoted statistics from Time magazine an American publication to bolster his argument He also objected to an American- published textbook used at a Leaside High school which he said reflects a continual glorification of American scientists and American institutions And the spelling is American which confuses the children who have been taught the Canadian way Mr Thompson told the board he himself had been directly involved in the sale of Ryerson and that a Canadian company had offered half a million dollars less than the Ameri can buyer The federal government should have subsidized the purchase to keep Canadian control he charged But Trustee Keith of Au rora disagreed was losing money he countered You cant expect a com pany to operate like that They had to sell for the best price they could get If it means American control its the fault of Canadians who wouldnt put up the money Mr Thompson however was unmoved There are books by Canadian authors gathering dust in the basement down there at he said Theyre valuable books Maybe through our teaching media we could use them We could probably get a reduction and effect some savings that way Trustee J Burrows suggested that there should be a specified mini mum of books with Canadian content used in York County schools But Trustee John Honsberger took strong exception to that idea Why should we be forced to buy thirdrate books for the sake of Canadian content he asked We should be using the best books avail able regardless of source He told the board that he has association with two publishing hous es Their biggest problem is to find Canadian authors Theyre out beat ing the bush for them Maybe what we should be doing as a board is to try and encourage our teachers to write books for school use Students run dirty picture contest A group of Newmarket high school students are holding a dirty picture contest The students
