142 said Dep uty Reeve Trent even If we have to put our tail between our legs to do it Deputy Reeve Wallace Donnell of North opposed the reso lution citing the urgency of imme diate relief which he said could only be obtained under one of the two ex isting bills He pointed out the urgent need for municipalities to send out their final tax bills and stop borrowing money for operating expenses York municipalities cant afford to wait for new permissive legislation he warned We have chosen to run inter ference for the provincial govern ment said Deputy Reeve It has taken eight months to gel Bills 142 and passed If wo pass this what are we going to do for next eight months while waiting for new legislation After the vote Warden Cook said he felt council had indicated in an informal and somewhat confused poll of councillors present that no municipality wished to adopt Bill Then he made bis suggestion regarding Bill to the bylaws and legislation committee Of course the warden con ceded weve rejected both bills Thats just the point Mr War den said Reeve McLean Weve rejected them both Reeve McLean said that in light of the justcompleted votes to make any considerations regarding Bill would be wishywashy He suggested a county delegation approach the pro vincial government and ask for the legislation called for in the resolution Earlier council had tabled with out action a resolution to modify assessment on all parcels of 10 acres or more a move which supporters claimed would give tax relief to county farmers The resolution called for farm assessment to correspond to recom mendations by a Select Committee of the Legislature which last year called for farm land to be assessed in seven categories ranging from to per acre This recommendation was not accepted by the provincial resolution was tabled after a majority of council indicated such a move would deal with only one aspect of the total tax problem and could well result in an even heavier share of the burden on residential tax payers Deputy Reeves Norm Barnard of Whitchurch and Rutherford of called for all county munici palities to move in unity If municipalities act autono mously in choosing methods of tax relief well be creating an octopus for the next several years said Depu ty Reeve Barnard ZEPHYR Chicago visitors By LILLIAN SWEET ZEPHYR Mrs Hilda had the pleasure of a visit from her sister and
