first major overhaul since NEWMARKET York County will get a new look next January 1 the first major revision since the townships and villages of this part of Ontario were entrusted with the management of their local affairs under elected councils and a county council in 1850 York County as a geographical unit came into existence much earlier however The County of York was cre ated July to provide a territorial unit as an electoral division and for the militia The land had been purchased from the Indians four years earlier apparently for a short bill of merchandise which included braided hats for county has since varied but when created a municipality it had a 30mile frontage on Lake Ontario extending from the Etobicoke River on the west to the Rouge on the east and north to Lake A major took their seats the province has consolidated the town ships towns and villages many of them represented into nine and possibly eight municipal units within a strong regional
