THE ERA WED FEBRUARY 1970 VOL 119 NO Editorials A G Bicycle computer York County Board of Education has the difficult task of distri buting millions of tax dollars every year to improve education and during its initial year members have done a valiant job setting up programs on which they might base their future decisions We feel however that the taxpayer would consider it money well spent if the board would trim a little somewhere else and spend that amount on its public relations and communications budget Today parents and taxpayers which are usually one and the same are not only facing a generation gap but find themselves flounder ing in a Sargasso Sea of terminology when it comes to understanding some of the issued by educators Lets face it in comparison to our brilliant kids most of us are clots and not with it so in order for the board to get it through our thick skull that Johnny is not just having fun if he plays hockey during a weekday afternoon but is heading toward his Masters degree a lot faster than father can find the dollars to pay for it we are going to have to get the message in a lot more elementary terms than we have been so far Planning and Development Superintendent Steve con densed it when he said To the student of today the computer is as understandable as the bicycle to his parents There appears to be a moral there somewhere regarding what is happening in our computer age education and explaining it to a bicycle riding parent Is bigger better Political leaders from four of the five central York County muni cipalities heard some awesome predictions by their colleagues on the imme diate future of this area last week We could have walltowall housing here soon predicted Aurora Mayor Dick Jllingworth He told the group meeting to discuss a regional thei be park that Newmarket Mayor Tom housing will be going in the fields we land left for a park and predicted subdivi- it of Newmarket within two All these predictions of an explosive growth in the immediate future raise the question for people already here is bigger really better Do Newmarket and Aurora residents want to wind up as small quaint pockets of older development hidden away among the subdivisions as has happened to old residents of Malton Oriole and will soon happen to and Richmond Hill Municipal elections will be held this year and if what we believe are the silent majority the people who like it here remain silent then they may not like it here much longer SUGAR SPICE By Bill Smiley Crescendo of catastrophe Isnt it odd how troubles come in batches You can sail along for as many as two whole weeks with everything going as smooth as cream Then the roof falls in Ours almost literally did last week when the ice piled up nearly two feet deep behind tilt and I couldnt find any one chop it off Your run of calamities however usually begins with a few minor things like a toothache or the flu then builds lo a of catastrophe finding the front door wide open with a temperature 10 below and the fur nace straining to keep up Wipers Then my car on which I recently spent to remove the problem of its not starting in the morning started not starting again My gimpy curling knee got gimpy and Ive been limping since like a sailor with a wooden leg But these things you are used to and cope with one by one tooth fixed Got a chap to and the knee wrapped in bandage that cuts off the lalion so badly my face is purple right between the eyes Like Sunday noon when we got a call from my daughter announcing though with a touch of trepidation that she was calling from the hos pital With infectious hepatitis some young people use in todays so ciety to escape from the A commune is an idealistic Utopia in which everyone shares the work and the food Just one big happy family with no nagging parents and nobody stopping one from doing ones thing hundreds of attempts to form such communes in the past The only thing wrong is that they dont work unless they are rigidly authoritarian like the communities of Kim spent a presumably happy week in the commune then caught hepatitis from one of the other inmates and lay sick semi conscious without eating for about two weeks She had too much pride feeling she had let us down to call We didnt have any phone number She staggered out to the emergency ward of a general hospital where they gave her a shot of On a Thursday night one of the members who had lately been getting a bit weird going on a big religious kick dressed himself in his best went to his room and set the house on fire The others barely got out into a winter night with the clothes they were in and nothing else He was burned to death The house was destroyed Somehow Kim got into hospital All shed saved was her Christmas present a radio A friend loaned her some clothes Shes feel- But and there are some big we dont yet know what damage has been done Her liver is affected Its normal thing is to whatever it does A doctor told her that the worst case theyd ever had in the hospital was And then told her that hers was Dear Editor The Tori to do anything about nursing homes It didnt take them long to raise their own wages though If they cant do anything about it then they should get out and let somebody else do it that can We need a man like we had in 1931 He was called a wild man a Russian and the loaded manure spreader etc but he clean ed out the Tories and got things Who was he Mitch Hep burn thats who Anyone remember like him the better BROCK REAR Church St Newmarket Dear Editor The St John Ambulance Brigade of York County at Huron Heights Second ary School accompanied by he light lybearded teacher Mr Larry Bone I felt like a condemned criminal be ing ushered to the gallows I knew I was to be bombarded with Ques tions by a group of students who were hungry for direct answers to contemporary social problems And I was totally unprepared since I had no idea just what questions they would come up with In my mind I had conjured up illusions of impulsive extroverts bordering on delinquency throwing emotional tantrums and blaming my age group for the destruction of civ button I envisioned recalcitrants iconoclasts and nihilists with little or no regard for rules beliefs or religi ous or moral laws I expected much more about sex drugs and delin quency When I found however was a group of students which ex hibited neither frustration nor infer iority a group of individuals each of whom appeared sure of his own destiny While a few had conven tional haircuts most sported long hair all well groomed neat and clean Some wore beards The girls were soberly miniskirled Anything less have been The adult community is sponsible for the fact that little guidance today in the ways of local affair has been paid to of the younger general posed New Community Centre They and how much it would cost That question has been by the report in last way for highrise apartments Hut this question seems very much in doubt The original plan llimiii Willi tin if the old Newmarket Motors building for town hall about all thevll be able luetic And yet when the amplc several students wanted to know what could lie done about the pollution of Fairy Lake Manv point ed out that in the summer it was impossible to sunbathe within 1 yards of the take or even enjoy the serenity of Wesley Brooks Park be cause of the slink Well I must admit I did to their problem Reeve from he In wis llil llHTl- rued he 11 be Hi fane II lull Mill why the younger generation is so con cerned about the filth and stench or this body of water when we adults are so indifferent And I am not proud of my indifference Reeve Clare Salisbury when I discussed the problem with him the other evening admitted hat council has no plans to end this Although in a previous column I offered tin opinion Hie hill should be ientralh lot ited if the purchase of the Newmarket Motors building is going to intefere with I In progress of the centre then I must go Parkway In the meantime Drew Chairman of the Newmarket Area Community Centre Commit tee tells me hat his committee has had recent discussions with the School Board authorities regarding the By had Whin My all to players Ive perform I ly picked Bill Human in f centra lull oal ami Bill Cowley at changed my after some record of choices was the play skate well a I rrilr make goal I to CM yea lays ick Saw I he and he has mere than other Ranger I picked him over Bill mainly because always played for the and always had a good team in front of him might have been the games Its Blackjack Stvnr nd Doug Harvey on defense When a tor- up and Stewart usually wound up with the puck Harvey hay day was the best rushing I ever saw Even during the end of his career he still con trolled the game making the rest of the players on the ice go at his pace What about Bobby Orr Hes played three season- ami if he con tinues the way hes going now hell unquestionably be the greatest At centre I chose Jean a whisker over Bill Cow ley The reason mainly because veau has the highest average of goals scored compared to games played than any other hockey player and that includes Howe Hull Richard and the rest of them Bill was the niftiest I ever saw one of the shiftiest players I ever saw I remember seeing him split the de fense one time leaving the two de fensemen spinning like dervishes without knowing where he was after he was feet past them At right wing its tie be tween Howe and Ric hard Ii my opinion Howe is the best player to ever play hockey but if I was coaching a team I would want the Rocket on it If you saw him At left wing its got to I be a long time before his scoring records will be broken The best team I ever saw the Montreal of the mid- fifties when they placed five out of The best line the Kraut line of Boston Bruins Each member or the line anticipated the others moves and had the abilitv to lift the crowd to its feet every time they took the puck up the ice Seeing Coonly Since
