Nasello named county finance chief in upset vote REEVE CLARE SALISBURY exercises In backroom politics at last weeks inaugural session of York County Council In an unexpected development Reeve Sam of Sutton was named Finance Chairman even though he had no apparent designs on the job For the most part the selec tion of county leaders for the new year adhered to the traditional script To no ones surprise King Township Reeve Gordon Cook was acclaimed warden for and Whitchurch Reeve Burnett was named first commissioner also by acclamation The battle for second commis sioner developed into a contest be tween the Old Guard and the New Guard of County Council The Old Guard won By a 1612 vote Town Reeve defeated Reeve John McLean But it was the Finance Chair man battle which reflected total de parture from the script Newmarket Reeve Clare Salisbury wanted the job and In any other year he might have gotten it But this apparently is the final year for County Council as it now ex ists Regional government due next Jan 1 will change the entire admin istrative structure of what is now York County Because of this factor old tra lost their customary signifi cance And possibly for the same rea son Salisbury lost a job ho badly wanted Salisbury was first commissioner and according to tra dition was in line for Finance Job To carry the normal succession a step further he would then have Vaughan Township Reeve Williams last years second com missioner also wanted the job When the Striking Committee the body which chooses all the standing com mittees for the county reached an impasse both Salisbury and Williams had not lobbied for the position In fact it was Nasello who nominated Salisbury during the Striking first meeting The Striking Committee held a second meeting before submitting its report to County Council because several members had second thoughts about who should be Finance Chairman And wanted a committee vote to determine the strength of his support Aurora and the Reeve of Newmarket about their ideas said the warden Both Aurora and Newmarket Councils appointed special committees o jointly on Hie matter Town to order pump for Woodmount sewer NEWMARKET Town building inspector William Brookes told members of council Monday night there is no prob lem with grades or storm sewers In the subdivision He said how ever his job wasnt to be responsible for the grade elevations Council was told the previous week expensive homes in the subdivision were built two feet lower than they should have been and were in danger of being flooded In my opinion the only prob lem is that the sewage disposal plant overflow is below the opening to the cul vert said Mr Brookes He said the plant had only one pump to get sewage into the culvert and told council if the hydro failed or the pump quit for some reason sewage would Mr Brookes said he would re fuse to issue any more occupancy permits for the new homes until the problem was solved and council agreed The council lors also agreed a standby pump is ne cessary The question was referred to the operations committee for further study The question of whether builder Greg did in fact sink his foun dations feet two feel below the level re commended by the consulting engineers on the subdivision remained unresolved after the hourlong debate Monday as did the question of who is responsible for checking them In letters tabled at last weeks council meeting Holland Valley Conser vation Authority resources manager Der ek a drainage expert said the development is approximately certify council it looks like a lack of liaison be tween some members of council the building inspector and the town engine er He told council the publicity result ing from the earlier meeting had killed at least one sale in the subdivision and he criticized the press for reporting the council meeting NEWMARKET York County Warden Gordon Cook will appoint a spec ial committee on regional government in the near future he told County Council last week He said the appointments would be made following the next meeting of the InterMunicipal Committee a panel of York mayors and reeves Council indicated last week that tradition has at long last taken a back scat to practicality Senior citizens units delayed Newmarket 8952331 Aurora Keswick 4764882 year Surgeoner NEWMARKET Objections raised one man former mayor Bert Kent may have kilted Ontario Housing Corporation plans to construct a senior citizens apartment building on Eagle St next year OHC may have to build two smaller buildings or suggested a cor poration spokesman find another site Mr Kent told an Ontario Muni cipal Board hearing held here last Fri day that he objects to the town proposal to the threeacre site for more apartment units per acre and that he ob jects to a building instead of the two lower buildings originally plan ned There is an existing fourstorey 54 suite senior citizens building on the site Ontario Municipal Board Mr Arrcll adjourned the hearing without making a final decision after Mr Kent agreed he wouldnt object further if Ontario Housing agrees to erect two buildings instead of one 13storey unit and to divide suites allowed under zoning approximately the I ruled Mr Kents objection valid because the former mayors home Ham Is within foot the legal limit for siting objections of the property Ontario Housing Corporation was represented at tho hearing has held up that senior citizens building full year said Mayor Tom after the meet ing Last week announced a freeze on construction of senior citizens buildings but a corporation spokesman said it wouldnt necessarily hit the New market project The freeze will last until federal government indicates to OHC what funds are available in for fede ral contributions to the projects Mr Kent caught the OMD mem bers town officials and town lawyer Wil- Friday by Ask county report on highrises for Cans Parkway proposal to townowned land for high rise use so the town could sell it at a substantial profit He would then have used the profit to partially pay for However planning board chair man Gordon estimates the coun ty will take at least six to eight months and he says the planning board wont act on the until the study said Mr injections without warning The former mayor told town council in November and stated in his original objection to the that he to rezoning until I have been advised that Newmarket resi dents will be given accommodation in that building He was also critical of management of the present Eagle St building The town forces who were fight ing to get the rezoning for the 13storey approved so OHC could start the consulting REMAND GIRL that he and Mr didnt have the second one with the more detailed grad ing requirements Town engineer George MacLellan said he had one and tho de veloper Construction Co had one It was up to to give it to their builder he said Mr said his grades were correct by the plan he had but Mr of marijuana was remanded last Friday to Feb on a legal technicality Peggy Ann Wickware was char ged after nine policemen raided a house on Lane in Newmarket on Nov 22 She pleaded not guilty The trial was remanded after defense counsel Ross Linton argued the Crown had failed to establish that a do cument was properly served to the girl Judge Clare Morrison ordered Ihe remand so that the Crown could pro duce a witness in lieu of the document be ing read Into evidence East Township Po lice Constable John Hope testified he led raid after receiving when the contents of her purse was examined He said this was done in the presence of Hillock and a police When the Crown tried to intro duce an analysts certificate the trial was adjourned prepared for Mr Kents objection a property owner opposed building near his home My objection Mr Kent the board is that 13 in that ivuulil not be a use with rest area He said the Eagle St corner where building would be situated is already a busy one and on top of this municipality bus no fire fighting equipment for thus type of building He said it would be very bad planning to put a building in there when the towns original plans for throe smaller apartment units This town spent to clean up lhal area ihe lake and river and if Ihey build a storey building there it will spoil We might as well have saved our money Mayor Tom told the board planned the single higher building to make the best use of Ihe den sity available He said the designers build adequate fire protection into such The mayor warned if is forced o build lower buildings the re sult would be two or three block tpe structures which would cover a higher proportion of the threeacre site Mr Arrell pointed out present zoning would allow 111 suites on the site and that suites are there now The most you could build under the existing zoning would be or one more building like he present one an increase in density for the 13slorey building Is there something magic about and their suites for elderly citi zens asked the OMB member Why should you get an increase of 14 suites Mr Arrell also Mr Kent It was a poor objection he put in
