Hasketts Hash By George Haskell Errington to lead minor hockey K EAST Parents and sup porters of minor hotkey in East Town ship are reminded the East era an opportunity to von Gwillimbury Minor Hockey tlieir thoughts and ideas Association annua meeting the programme that will be held May 11 Times are changing and changing fast We cant say it is for the better in sport either There was a time when a player signed a card and that was it This idea now seems to be out moded Bob signed recently to pitch for Rays Gulf in the Beaches League Now it would seem has had a change of heart ft is reported he has flown the coop to sign with Casey Cripps and Richmond Hill Dynes and the Dynesman recently were requested by league officials to quit the league It seems Casey was raiding the other clubs contrary to a league edict After the Dynes ouster from the Beaches Casey and company were accepted for membership in the Big Four There are many stories going the rounds as to why fled the Rays to return the Hillers and many rumoring of the whys and wherefore Unfortunately signed only a Beaches League contract and not an certi ficate although he did promise to pitch for Rays in the OASA The certificates at the time werent available Of course if had ed an hes still be with Newmarket or out of action until he had obtained a release from the local club TIME FOR SHOWDOWN Now if it happens the Beaches Lea gue Is affiliated with the OASA maybe in trouble with the provincialwide association If he has signed a second certificate with Rich mond Hill We hope the will lake time to investigate this situation ft is time for show down in these matters Weve known players Who have been suspended for signing two ficates in one season One of the main problems connected with sport today is not the sport itself but the glory seeker coaches and managers They want to get all the good players on one team and want to win at all costs We wonder each year why In there are fewer teams Its simply that some character chases around and grabs all the best players This means several teams are rob bed of talented players The sponsor and manage ment of the raided clubs say whats the use We wont have a team So and so has all the good players we dont have a chance This condition is also prevalent in minor ball as well as in and senior ranks In the old days taking the Lake League for an example every community had Its ball team There were teams at Baldwin Brown Hill Willow Beach Sharon etc The league had as many as ten or more teams Today only a half dozen teams remain There also junior leagues for bring ing along players All the above teams have dis appeared and the junior league has folded In the old days of the Iakc loop mile age radius was five today it is ten with half as many teams Either ball playing interest has fallen off or aa wo suggested some are grabbing all the best players leaving others out in the cold because all the best have been skim med off SCHOOL Softball has moved into the schools which is a good sign Newmarket Huron Heights Bradford and Pickering College are North York- entries this season Next week plan to bring you up to date on OASA rule etc The York Ontario Softball League teams will get together next week to organize It is expected approximately teams will compete Pleased to note the Gwillimbury Heights and Fast Township Associ ations are making ready for another season of designed to give over boys and girls an opportunity to participate in the small mond sport We havent anything definite as yet on the Newmarket program We have one definite Hub
