THE ERA WED AUGUST VOL NO Editorials Should pay more The Era supports the postal workers in their strike and feels that government should not step in and order them back to work The postal workers are in many cases overworked and underpaid They are members of a legitimate union and have every right to strike over working conditions that they feel are unjust and money that they feel is inadequate Because they are civil servants and provide such a necessary ser vice to Canada gives the Federal Government no right to force them back to work or impose compulsory arbitration on them Serious hardnosed bargaining is the most lasting way to settle a strike Using force will only lead to bitterness and ultimately another The present strike was caused by a series of waffling previous governments and a little ostrichlike behavior by the present government Perhaps we cant blame the present government too much because until June it was concerned more about getting elected then the con sequences of not being able to get the mail delivered The lot of postal workers must be improved They must receive more money This is going to cost those who use the mail more money we who mail letters bills advertising flyers parcels and yes newspapers The Era agrees with the hirsute editor of the Aurora Banner that newspapers are not paying their way at the post office It might have been fine 116 years ago when The Era began publishing to be subsidized by the post office Things are different today A weekly newspaper in 1852 was about the only means of communication people in this sparsely populated land had Today theres TV radio the telephone modern roads and railways Why should a person spend five cents to mail a letter out of town when a newspaper which is 50 times as heavy many times more bulky pay only a tiny fraction of what it costs to mail a letter Why should it cost only two cents to have an advertising flyer delivered by a postman to your door when you have to pay four or five cents to have him deliver a letter Why should it cost you only cents to have a parcel delivered by the post office when it costs eight or times that amount to have the railway expressman deliver the same parcel Canadian governments have buried their heads in the sand long enough about raising postal rates for second and third class mail The present government be able to see daylight and adjust the rates so that the postal workers can have better working conditions and a decent wage SUGAR SPICE By Bill Smiley Join the parade It used to he three strikes and youre out but now it seems that you can have as many strikes as you like Liquor strike in Quebec para lyzes the right of every honest to get stoned Seaway workers tie up millions of tons of essentials like Scotch whisky most of the the Dear Editor I see by last weeks Era that there was a squabble in Newmar ket Council about members attend ing conventions I moved from this year and I used to read pretty much the same thing in the local paper about councillors attend ing conventions Its squabbling time because politicians like to have the taxpayer subsidize part of their holiday by paying their room and board and travel for a few days before they take off for their cottage or triy I remember one time in Scar- bore Council when a councillor raised such a fuss about not be ing able to go to a convention that he was given first choice for the following year Naturally he snubbed the Sew er Pipe Manufacturers Convention in in December and took the Crushed Gravel Association Convention in Hawaii in the same month Every year councils set a con vention budget Why dont council lors split the pot and go to the convention of their choice They could do thisat a private meeting with seniority in service ruling and the mayor could have veto power This would be the best way of having the taxpayer pay for part of his holidays and would save a lot of time which could be devot ed to municipal business No Freeloader Dear Editor I see that King Township and Aurora councils have decided to save the taxpayer money and hold a liquor vote this fall They decided on their own to hold this vote with little or no urging from the cocktail bar and liquor interests They are going to use the Federal voters list and thereby save the expense of hav ing one for their municipality Why couldnt Newmarket and East councils do the same thing Please dont publish my name as my husband is a beer drinker and couldnt care less about liquor I dont like beer but enjoy an occasional drink somewhere outside Dry Too Long THIS WEEK By Ray Argyle The stubborn campaign According to Time magazine the prospect of a presidential elec tion between Hubert Humphrey and Richard Nixon is enough to start a small migration lo Can- Rome Americans thus seem to be reacting against these two long established political figures in much the same way as the dele gates to the Liberal convention last Spring reacted against Paul Martin and Robert Winters Could you imagine any thing duller one Liberal delegate was quoted at that time than Robert Winters and plod ding around this country In a gen eral election The Liberal party of course took care of the prospect by choosing chemistry Is In the United Stales If so Senator ISugeiiO McCarthy Is I ho obvious beneficiary For all that Hubert Humphrey was an acknowledged loader of the liberal wing in I he Democratic party years ago ho was respon sible for the si rung civil rights plank which drove southern Demo crats out of the party In droves in 1118 he has been tagged whom Mr Humphreys desperate be hindthescenes effort to get Ted Kennedy to be his vicoproaldonttal running mate smacked of political opportunism at lis most obscene level Such would have serv ed Humphreys political ambitions very nicely It is gratifying that the only surviving Kennedy has ruled out any political activity in This leaves Sen the stubborn campaigner who last winter wont into the New Hamp shire primary to give his partys voters alternative to the escalat ing Vietnam war policies of Presi dent Johnson No need here to recap the re sults McCarthys upset win in New Hampshire Sen Robert Ken nedys entry into the campaign President Johnsons withdrawal the start of the Paris peace talks the second Kennedy assassination all these events flowed direct ly or Indirectly from McCarthys entry in New Hampshire Hud Sen Kennedy lived it is considered probable there would emerged some kind of Ken nedy partnership If Ken nedy had obtained the Democratic nomination he would have need ed a more conservative running mate than McCarthy but Mc Carthy himself would then have become a prime for the job of Secretary of State To most Sen Mc Carthy is just the name of a man who caused a lot of upsets in this year of American political turmoil A university professor a sen ator from Minnesota Hubert Hum phreys homo a man who has been able to tremend ous youth appeal McCarthy at the same time been unable to break through to the ethnic or colored minorities in the manner of Sen Kennedy The fact he is not closely identi fied with the Negroes as Ken nedy was could strengthen Mc Carthys appeal to many white vot- in Bring back US troops and let Saigon from a government Mc Carthy says And the longer the Paris peace talks drag on without progress the greater will be the appeal of the McCnrthy message There is no doubt that Americans fed up with the war in Viet- nnm Whether the Democratic party delegates are fed up enough to turn to Sen McCnrthy remains to be seen Whatever happens this stubborn campaigner will have great influence on the choice of the Democrats and beyond that on the outcome of the Nov ember elections Crier Back from holidays and the beer strike long over and the
