WED MAY IKS VOL SO Editorials South vs North The charge by of York County has extreme On one we are virtually every local governing body that schools costs are the reasor for skyrocketing taxes Bat in this instance we are told that the higher commercial- levies make it possible for the southern areas to go in for gimmicks Perhaps we in the North are just as well off without these school bills educational standards E F II In any event we can be justly proud the quality of the teachers we employ The fear of the southern municipalities that their own educational level might be diluted by the tax dollar being more equitably distri buted with northern neighbors underlines the all too prevalent money- mad mentality which only too often governs the thinking of decision time we all realized that the best educational system can not necessarily he purchased by the almighty dollar but that much depends on the motives and dedication of those on whom we place the respon sibility of teaching our young The fact quite evident that there is no substantial difference in the standards of education between the north and south sections of the comity Why not quit In politics the name of the game is Win Bat for the New Democratic Party in Canada the name of the game is Try And in and YorkNorth the name of the game seems to be Try a Little NDP leader Tommy Douglas admitted on television over the week end that his party could not possibly form the next government after the June election This defeatist attitude has infiltrated right through the ranks of the local riding associations especially in York County Several months ago at YorkNorth provincial annual meeting Stephen Lewis for Scarboro west and a resident of Newmarket and his partys Ontario deputy leader assured delegates that the NDP would sweep the riding through money and super organization He predicted the party would recruit one percent of the ridings eligible votere before the next election He added that John Brown also a Newmarket resident would knock on doors for the candidate in the next Federal election Theres no sign of this because of the fart that the candidate is hardly known in the riding and there was even a move prior to last weeks nomination meeting not to field a candidate at and throw all the riding strength behind the Liberals YorkNorth Federal candidate Jack Grant is little known and stands little chance of being elected If the does not want to play the game of politics to win it should throw in the towel SUGAR SPICE By Bill Smiley Stop the world Sometimes you feel like Atlas trying to carry the world on your shoulders With a slipped disk and and an arthritic knee what can you do You cant And you cant set it down for a rest You know you could never This is the predicament in which the average middleaged husband and father finds himself most of the time Thats the fellow you find wand ering dazedly in a supermarket or blundering through a swamp try ing to catch a seveninch speckled trout or playing golf with intense ineptitude If you ask him hell swear that quite over the hill yet him and quiz him youll find that hes not only over the hill but sliding down the other side so fast therell be nothing but a left when he hits the What do you really think about that old bedroom suite We bought it on sale 15 years ago As far as Im concerned its fine Theres a raised platform called bed on which to sleep and a driver Its perfectly adequate What do you do in a bedroom anyway except to go to sleep and get up and stumble around in the morning I ask in all honesty She other bedroom is handy for Like putting ladies coats in when you have a party Or cutting your toenails in But my wife feels it doesnt have tone class elegance or practically anything worthwhile its a place to sleep Exactly my point Her ideas run toward a new bed room suite fresh decorating and a lot of other things that arent going to make me sleep or do any thing else any better than I do in the present shabby lovable little for example with a new bedroom suite in the background I cant see that a new eggshellblue interior is going to make me look or feel any I fail to realize that is going to give me anything but a big bank loan It certainly isnt going to make me spring out of that new sack every morning carol ling Here hath been dawning another Think wilt thou let it slip useless Its not really that Im an old curmudgeon Its just that Ive been through it before We once started out with a new sink in the bathroom Eventually I wound up with something resembling a sul tans bath chamber in black and pink and debt up to my ears Just to cheer old Alias up this week Kim has been diagnosed as But to have a sick didnt say anything about argu ing or being snippy or throwing cold water on her parents hopes and plans for her If you hear a tremendous thud one of these days Atlas has Are you Throckmorton THIS may be our as THE Readers ERA Dear Editor On behalf of the need more outlets for liquor and beer Councillors Wallace Donnell and D J Davidson are to be com mended for opposing putting the opening of beer parlors and cock tail lounges on a plebiscite People who like to drink can do so in their homes and if they insist in drinking in public they are only few miles from these establishments in Sutton Certainly careful consideration should be given to the THIS WEEK By Ray Argyll IT Ball bounces badly A surge of resentment built up across Canada this week against the new American ambassador to the United Nations George Ball In a new book Ball wrote that Canada would be unable to survive as a separate nation US can influence if it is not to lose its dominance at the UN The Canadian reaction to Rail was a mixture of wounded pride and wellfounded logic Canadians countered with the claim that we realize our nationhood costs us something in material wealth but well never give it up to he part of the American melting pot It was on this very point ironi
