TEE ERA VOL NO Editorials Salesmen needed now It is apparent from the comments at last weeks Industrial Appr Hon Night in Newmarket that the town must have more land or it will The Era echoes these comments because as Planning Board vice- chairman Hugh Grant points out most of Newmarkets land is either developed or slated for almost immediate development Mr Grant contends that Newmarket provides most of the social amenities for residents of the surrounding municipalities If Newmarket is allowed to strangle it cannot provide these amenities any longer and certainly not enlarge them for the large number of persons we know are going to be living there in the very near future Other comments at Appreciation Night concerned the towns urban renewal scheme Newmarkets industrialists feel that this scheme is a must for the town They feel as The Era feels that the Main St area is too good an area to allow to deteriorate any further That area has been the backbone of commercial assessment and with a facelifting and renovation will continue to provide north ern York County residents with a good place to shop as well as help keep Newmarkets tax rate reasonable If Newmarkets urban scheme is not approved or is pigeonholed then everyone id will suffer homeowners and industrialists alike through higher taxes But most felt that room to expand was Newmarkets most pressing The towns annexation bid for some of Kings East and Whitchurchs land might not be entirely successful but the Ontario Municipal Board is surely going- to lei Newmarket have more land Town council should start looking now for someone to sell this land for industry not wait until we have the land and nobody to sell it Theyre worth more We ask them to protect us from thieves murderers and maniacs behind the wheel of an automobile We ask them to work in all kinds of weather all kinds of hours and perform all kinds of tasks not necessarily associated with their job Yet we pay them only cents more per day than we pay some people for doing nothing This is the case in Whitchurch Township where a welfare reci pient receives every two weeks and a first class constable 182 and has to pay his transportation costs to and from work to boot A first class const ible in tv per year His counterpart in Newmarket will soon be paid per year An constable is paid annually Yet each of them do basically the same work It is apparent that something is wrong with our society when we almost the same amount of money for doing pay a man whose life is in danger daily There a- something wrong when we pay such a man than another man working a few miles away This is only one big reason why there should be an ar of northern York Countys forces For then every polic be performing the same type of work and receiving the This police force amalgamation will take year meantime lets pay our Whitchurch policemen much i market policemen and more than a man who docs nothing SUGAR SPICE By Bill Smiley Take that Mr Whipp is Appreciation Night THE Readers ERA Dear Editor Surely the Newmarket Lions Club deserves a pat on the back and the gratitude of everyone in the town for glutting on their Music Festival Each year the Festival seems to grow both in the numbers participating and the area from which they come This year we are told individuals will take part and they will come from all over the county with the exception of Metro Toron to In attracting such a number from such a wide area most of whom have relatives or friends attending the Festival un doubtedly brings some outside money and perhaps more impor tant impresses Newmarket on the minds of many in a most favor able way As Lion officials point out the project goes beyond their mem bership and functions with the cooperation of many segments of the community such as sponsoring merchants be churches involved Its certainly an event of which we can all be proud Mrs Joan Newmarket Dear Editor According to jour report in last weeks newspaper on the Aurora council meeting the town has lost the two proposed high rise apart ment buildings on Wellington St West From previous council reports it seems only too clear that our elected officials have been mainly responsible for the unwarranted and costly delays referred to by the contractor In Councillor Dick proposal that the Clerk prepare a detailed report on all the delays and the reasons for them it ap pears that Council is well aware that it is primarily responsible for this slate of affairs However calling for a report in itself will not prevent future situations like this from final answer in the hands of the electorate If the voters closely follow the actions of Coun cil and dot ermine which numbers are responsible for the time wast ing and obstructive tactics then they can turf them out at the next election And then maybe we will have like pro William THIS WEEK By Ray Politics in the year 1974 What would it really he like if following account is highly fictitious By
