Hasketts Hash By George Haskell Huron Heights staff and students found fun at the arena Friday It was a grand idea by the organizers We need more of these special athletic nights It was well organized but not so organized that the fun was taken out There were broom ball games ball games hockey matches pleasure skating and relay races The men teachers were defeated by the lady teachers This can only be described as an earth shaking upset Goalie Mrs G Principal Shepherd Mrs Bone and Mrs Hyde were drafted to star with the ladies The ball interform tests were probably first in world ball games on ice Because of an unfortunate spill only two reply races were run Grade E5 team of Bob McEIrov Garv Woodcock Gerald and Rusty won the Grade boys title Grade 5B10 team of Irene Wyzstako Nancy Palmer Diane and Diane Foley were girls Grade 910 champions Highlight was the selection of a Carnival Queen Lorraine Gilpin was crowned Queen Diane Long- field and Judy were first and second runner- up Principal Shepherd and myself had the pleasant duty of selecting the Queen ARENA SPECTATORS How to put fans in the arena Its a problem these days The Argus draw went over Thurs day This included a bus load contingent from Ajax The visitors made the arena a noisy spot Theres no excuse for local fans missing the fun The heats on the arena is quite comfortable The are playing good hockey More than participated in the Huron Heights athletic night festivities Fans and executives were pleased with the Argus Thursday effort that beat the power- packed Ajax White Knighters One observant fan quipped that isnt the team you had out there a week ago It was in fact Somewhere over the week the Argus crew found their hustle It payed off in the win column Only player on the sidelines with a knee injury Thursday was Alan St John What have junior hockey players got against shooting We watch them try to that last man on the way to the goalmouth Some in fact try to stick handle past the guy in the big pads Usually it doesnt work Facts and figures show more goals are scored from the foot range than from the deke Todays hockey with its crease confusions shoves and scuffles is tailor made for the shooter When Bill was in our midst his chant was shoot shoot shoot and Sir William was so right Theres truth in the saying you have to shoot to score A glaring weakness with many of our local teams is their inability to get the puck out of their own end This difficult isnt exclusive here Many teams have the same problems Some years back Herb Cain and Norm were given the task of endeavouring to standardize Hub hockey procedures at all levels Because it didnt produce overnight miracles the idea was opted out This was a mistake If it had been con tinued today the results would be very much in evidence POSITIONAL PLAY We do such a program here It bugs us to see players who have come up through the local system over a year span still not able to play their position take a pass give a pass etc You wonder why this failure to teach the fundamentals at an early age We have men in our midst able to teach these fundamentals first to our coaches ami then to our young players Too today there is little opportunity on the basis of an hour or so of playing time to teach skating To be a good hockey player you must be able to skate Lets give some thought to these two problems Is Fairy Lake the answer to the skating problem Bob made his debut with Toronto a sparkler a pair of goals John the Kid from Kettleby starred in goal for the Argusmcn Thursday have folded reports executive Phillips
