Farm Report By Al Wall Bulbs Will Era Oat Agricultural Representative for York County I have had a lot of calls in the last few weeks about the provisions for basic herds in income tax Somehow rumors are going that the basic herd policy is going to be discontinued I have checked with the Taxation Office in Toronto and find that no changes are planned Livestock owners can still have their herds put on the basic herd plan Basic Herd is a method suggested for income tax purposes to enable a farmer to classify his breed ing herd as a capital asset Being capital it does not have to be considered as income when a herd is dispersed Its good and the longer an owner has it the better Basic herds set up just before a sale often arent nearly as helpful as they could have been if the owner had started several years earlier Starting a basic herd isnt difficult An applica tion form obtained from the Taxation Office Adelaide St Toronto filled in and sent to the same office will do the job Electric power is a cog in the production end of a farm that gets bigger each year It milks cows cools milk takes out the manure and venti lates the barn It feeds the pigs hens and beef cattle It makes fences warms the floors and pro vides heat for livestock maternity wards With so many new uses a good knowledge of electricity is worthwhile for any farm operator Im pleased that the farm department of Ontario Hydro is putting on a course for fanners this winter There will be a session each Tuesday after noon from Jan to Feb in our board room at the Newmarket Plaza Fanners are invited to register at Ontario Hydro offices in Sutton Rich mond Hill or Milk producers in York were advised of their new quotas last week The new allotments are of shipments in the quota setting period This is a cut for many of course but most dairymen were afraid that the cut would be more severe If its any consolation to these who lost quota a great many shippers who before had to live with very poor quotas will be better off under the new plan And for the first time in many years all pro ducers now know quite definitely where they stand in selling their milk m See Need For New Grain Machinery GVELPH uprightleaved grain varieties being developed by plant breeders will mean drastic changes in farm machinery design particularly the seed drill Dr Crop Science Department Ontario Agricultural College Guelph found considerable yield In creases In new winter wheat varieties using narrow row- spacing Conventional seed drills used by farmers for decades place seeds 7 Inches apart increased an average of per cent for the new varieties when the rows were placed to Inches apart about one half the usual dis tance Smaller Increases were found the betterknown varieties were planted In nar row rowspacing the same lime research ers tested the effect of seed ing rates on the narrow row widths Three rates one two and three bushels per acre were seeded It was found that the recommended two bushels per acre rate gave the highest yields Despite the fact that there are twice as many rows in narrow row- spacing there is no need to Increase the seeding rate In winter wheat has also indicated other pos sible changes in seed drills Considerable Interest is being shown In the development of a seed drill which would not require tillage prior to seed ing An experimental machine Is being tested In Ontario and several machinery manufac turers have Indicated that they recognize the need for such a machine Cutting the cost of produc tion Is the main aim Instead of three operations before seeding only one would be needed With the higher fer tility levels and minimum til lage continuous wheat may soon become a common prac tice Other advantages of mini mum tillage are leaving the stubble for holding snow on fields during the winter and speeding up the fall seeding operations which can be done Immediately after harvest COOPERATIVE CONSULTATION CORNER by Rob McDonald Branch Manager Sir Mien per cent success on the very first are the answer to the would be window gard ener who lives in an apart ment and Is very limited in what can be grown Many gardening books and articles still insist that Farmers Merely land Users TORONTO Ontario farm ers have been told they can never again be absolute own ers of their land as in the past but merely users The warning comes from Dr A Berry president of the Council of On tario who spoke to the thirty- first annual convention of the Ontario Federation of Agri culture He says mat more than any time in the past we arc be coming conscious of and alarmed about the contamin ation of the environment in which we must work and live He says men have a duty to leave the resources of land air and water in a condition fit for use by their descend ants is a social obli gation In owning land hous ing or industry as well an in the use of these facilities through a lease or by other rights of occupation to keep the property free of pollution I must be placed in the dark for a two or three week period in order to have them flower Im happy to report that conducting numerous trials over the past few years this is not necessary in any way and the best thing to do is to put bulbs immediately In your sunniest or lightest window This keeps the stems shorter and stockier and helps prevent them from falling over towards he end of the blooming period as you would daffodils tulips and hyacinths will always produce stems that are too long come to our gardens from southern France Theyre not hardy like the other daffodils and are dis- In The Garden By John carded after theyve bloomed Its unfortunate that the growers of these bulbs in southern France are not too Interested in the job and as a result no Improvements have been introduced during my memory As with all bulbs to be forc ed get highest quality and firmest that are available Forcing any bulb Into bloom out of season is asking quite a bit from it and you need aU the strength and quality you can obtain I suggest that you buy at least a dozen paper- whites By starting off three or four bulbs at a time days to two weeks apart you will have fresh blooms coming along for a six to eight week period Anyone wishing to make an exciting display over the Christmas season could buy to paperwhites and start them off in soil in a seed ling flat It should be deep enough to sufficient small stones or pebbles so that when the bulbs TRUCKERS get your 10point winter check are set in place tap of them there will be two inches space between tbe base of the bulb and the bottom of the bowl Ive always encouraged my Jo collect pretty Each year these are added stones and pebbles on their to a growing collection of summer holidays on various stones saved especially for trips around the
