Manager Newmarket Branch QnFarm Dryers Last week we made some general comments on grain corn harvesting This week Id like to follow up with some brief remarks about different kinds of on farm dryers not including cribs for grain corn You will see dryers and port able batch dryers and portable continuous flow available on the market Should you buy one Which one The experts tell us you need at least 10000 bushels of corn to dry each year before you can afford a dryer The kind you buy depends on your needs Ive tried to list some advantages and dis advantages of each kind BatchJrthln Dryer Advantages cheapest to operate about cents for fuel per bushel com pared to to cents for portable dryers Requires less additional storage space and is cheaper to set up a complete system Disadvantages- Corn tends to dry unevenly Grain may develop stress cracks due to uneven heating Quality could suffer in corn closest to heat source The system cannot be automated It is limited to 10000 to 15000 bushels Portable Batch Dryer Advantages Fast- drying time a difference of up to hours drying time over the batchinbin type A bushel capacity dryer could handle up to bushels per day Corn dries fairly evenly Less cosily to in stall then continuous flow dryer if not automated Disadvantages- High cost of installation and operation Advantages Dries corn quickly and evenly will handle large volume of corn if you have plenty of storage space Disadvantages- Requires plenty of storage space for wet corn to permit continuous flow through dryer This has higher installation cost Requires expensive automating controls and thus costs more than a manuallyoperated batch dryer Frequent rains and tempera tures that were cooler than average combined to produce excellent growing conditions for lawns this summer and fall At the same time south ern Ontario lawns have had plenty of troubles Many of the unthrifty lawns Ive seen lately are just plain running out of potash This im portant plant food is toed largely as a catalyst rather than as a direct plant food Its needed in relatively small but extremely vital amounts by the grass plants Most of the modem high nitrogen fer tilizers analyzing or barely maintain the amount of potash withdrawn when common Kentucky blue- grass the main basts of the lawn With Merlon and other improved varieties which start to grow much ear lier in the spring dont go dormant In the summer and keep growing later In he fall were definitely losing ground On lawns where the owner has tried everything and has dosed bis grass with ev ery conceivable form of chem ical without the lush green growth he wants he should try applying 10 lbs of sulphite of potash per 1 square feet of lawn area In many cases this will result In a color Improvement In a week to ten days after treat ing Not too many home garden ers are aware of the trouble caused by the sod The adult of this pest is a moth recognized as a small miller hat flies up as you walk across the lawn There are several species but the one that usually attacks southern Ontario lawns is the As he female moth flies it drops eggs in a haphazard fashion over the entire lawn hatch into worms about a halfinch long at maturity Theyre a dirty- in color with a black spot along the side Theyll cause severe injury even when immature Young worms skeletonize the grass blades but the older ones cut them off at the sur face or chlordane sprayed on the grass blades will effectively control zanon is also excellent but should be applied as a spray and not as a dust Many cheap seed mixtures contain tall fescues a very coarse type of grass They form rough ugly clumps of tall wiry grass mixed In with the Kentucky and other finer grasses It seems to me that this summer Ive had almost as many com- plaints shout the tall fescues as have had about crab- grass wants to Its Here it BTj J ta fc I 11 III It ahatZ If J In V aaw fe vJWBf PV-r- aWfc Jit seamless FLOORING in A PERMANENT FLOOR kill Unfortun ately tt cannot be destroyed without also killing the sur rounding desirable grasses The best remedies so far are mechanical Where the clumps are few and scattered all you need to do is to chop through the centre of each with a butcher knife Give knife a twist to open the cut and this will allow earth and decay organisms to work into be ground In nearly every case this treatment kills the entire clump If the whole lawn Is affected wilh clods of this grassy weed then you use one of the new lawn renovators to do the cut ting There are two types of Iron Treatment For Young Pigs NEWMARKET Pig ane mia is one of the most com mon and the most easily cor rected problems of pig pro duction Anemic pigs are un thrifty Tney become a ghost ly white color particularly in the ears and they thump with short gulps of breath The problem is chiefly caused by a lack of iron according to Ontario Department of Ag riculture and Food livestock experts Pigs are born with a limited supply of iron and copper Milk is low in these elements and unless pigs have access to a supply from outside sources anemia will develop in the first two to three weeks of life Follow recommended prac tices and remember that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure fcHEST FREEZERS ALL SIZES undersell Everybody Its to buy at BRICES BARGAIN BARN 4784175 renovators One has fine wired or thin whisks that brush out duff and trash This is fine for some purposes but use less for culling into tall fes cues The type to use is one with revolving knives that ac tually cut into the turf and take out a thin slice Dont expect to get every clump the first time over Use the renovator once wait two weeks and go over the lawn a second time to get the clumps missed on the first trip over Its too late now to sow grass seed but nursery grown sod can still be laid success fully Lawns that were not fed in September would still benefit considerably from a feeding with a quick acting lawn food even at this late date The grass plants are de veloping new roots which will continue to grow when the surface of the lawn is frozen Keep the lawn mower going as long as the grass keeps grow ing q the lack of
