i THE ERA WED OCTOBER VOL NO ReElect Robarts York North voters have no alternative but to help send the Government back to Queens Park On his record Mr and his fellow Progressive Conservatives deserve reelection Through his leadership the Province of Ontario and her residents have enjoyed unparalleled prosperity And theres no reason why this prosperity wont continue under his leadership The Government has taken steps to alleviate the housing shortage This housing program will be at its ultimate the equal of a city of This program is larger than all other provincial housing programs combined The Government has taken bold steps in assisting the home owner With the implementation of some aspects of the Smith Report homeowners will realize a to saving in their municipal tax bills One just needs to by car outside the province to be sure that Ontario has the best system of roads in Canada The fourlane Freeway stretches from the Quebec border to the Michigan border Highway 400 knifes from Toronto to the vacation coun try on the west boundary of York North A similar super highway is well underway on the east boundary of York North This election campaign has seen much carping criticism from the opposition parties And thats all its been criticism without being constructive With the resignation of Andrew Thompson the Liberals have been unable to get organized under their new loader Robert Nixon They do not have the qualified candidates to effectively run a province as large and as prosperous as Ontario NOP leader Donald statement that his party would tell industries where they would locate their factories and what they could charge for their merchandise is ridiculous Statements such as this and other foolish planks in the platform makes his party laugh able and therefore not entitled to form the Government of Ontario The only alternative is the Government On their record the Progressive Conservatives deserve to be re elected The Bargainers The recent light fines and gentle tap on the wrist for the collection of hippytype characters in Richmond Hill Magistrates Court last week created a real farce and left a bad taste in the mouth from the view point of the attitude of action If one can believe what one sees arid hears on television one of the beatnik ringleaders appeared very happy at the cooperation of the police in advising them that a plea of guilty would have a beneficial effect on their sentences He also praised the police in front of the cameras because they had honored their side of the bargain They may have considered a guilty plea anyway but it smacks a trifle of the days of Al when there was gangsterpolice coopera tion and a you scratch my back attitude to save either the police or the courts time The great unwashed seem to be taking advantage of both the con sideration and dignity of the courtrooms of tins province to simply go out and think up something more shocking in order to scheme their way out of work or worry at the expense of the taxpayer Fines and even jail terms have affect on these segments of civilization whose sole ambition appears to be to discover just how Indolent and useless one can be without actually dying We would be delighted to see the next Ontario Government slip a handy little amendment into the laws of the land which would allow a magistrate to sentence some of these socalled Canadians into the Armed Forces for periods from six months up to two years Some might still rebel but we shudder to think what the sentence could be if they tried it with sergeantmajors we squarebashed with a few years ago and what a commotion would result in that first trip to the camp barber WEEK THANK YOU There is little anyone in Canada can say that the above picture does not Smiley My College CoEd If you think its tough trying to gel a son or daughter ready for college cooled out and settled in you should try it with a wife who hasnt been there for years Its an exhausting experience emotionally and financially AH the kids want is that you should take all their stuff down help unload it press a large sum upon them ami disappear back to so youll slop embarrassing them in front of their new classmates With Momma its not that simple First comes the tremendous deci sion itself comparable to Moses making up his mind to lend the Children back to the Promised Land There are surges of con fidence but they are outweighed by sudden despairs My brain is rusty Ill never make it Theyve probably lost my files Therell bo a rule refusing people over The course is most likely a lot harder now Ill feel like a fool with all those kids in miniskirts and eyeshadow And so on You patiently point out that rust can be removed any half wit can pass fourth year univer sities never of mal nutrition We cant afford it You cant get along without me And so on Tills of course is rank cowardice She simply is afraid to get her feet wet in the big cold world from which like all housewives she has been sheltered all these years by guess who So she goes to visit her mother for three days as a sort of trial run Comes home and is a bit dash ed to find the house still standing garbage out on schedule lawn cut kitchen tidy and Kim and I liv ing like Oriental She had to save face and go through with it but not before trying one more gambit It was impossible financially There was no way we could manage it Father points out that with judicious we can keep one of the family going to college Since Hugh is no longer there and in fact has a splendid job lay ing carpets it might as well be she This produces a days tears of mingled rage and grief over Hughs quitting It also produces a guilt com plex She vows that nobody has ever lived as cheaply at college as she will Shes going to pig it in a grubby little room All she needs is a siccpiughag card table and electric kettle Shell walk miles to save carfare hitch hike home on weekends Hah Have you tried to rent cheap little room lately Father took mother to city and while she registered at the college pour ed an ale and pored over the classi fied ads lies he could find was a room share bath and kitchen til 20 a week It wasnt bud Hut there was a stumblingblock as usual The other immatos were college girls and the landlady had an iron rule that no men except her own hus band were allowed inside the front door She was inflexible So was I Id planned to pad down with Ilia old lady the odd weekend saving the price of a hotel room To cut a long story to ribbons the shabby little room first sug gested has grown into an apart ment furnished And I wouldnt tell my closest friend let alone my hanker what rent is By Ray Tomorrow Its Venus Ten years ago this week Oct the highpitched beep beep of Sputnik I signalled the beginning of a new era of ex ploration This time of course the explora tion was that of space and Sput nik I was a meagre sphere as in significant years later as an air rifle pellet is to a heavy cannon When I first heard of the Rus sian success in orbiting a space sphere as insignificant years time man would aland on he sur face of the moon I was a little on the optimistic side Ten years have passed and both American and Russian space programs have encountered unex pected difficulties as they neared the crucial stage of their lunar goals But there was never doubt that once recovered from the shock of Russias success the US would enter into the space race with the grim determination to win what would be the centurys greatest propaganda victory a triumph which still eludes both nations Ill fortune dogged the American space effort through much of this first decade of the Space Age The Soviets were the first with a man in orbit the flight of Yuri Gagarin on April 196t was not equalled until the US vent John Glenn three times around the globe Feb 20 The Russians then scored one smashing success after another For what at that time seamed a fantastic til orbits the Soviets later in had Adrian G aloft for hours and minutes In 1963 a Soviet woman cosmonaut Valentino Tcrechkovn became the first and thus fat only member of her sex to orbit the earth A few months later the Russians had three men up in a single capsule dramatic evidence of Soviet liftoff capability which only now is beginning to be match ed by the US The Americans meanwhile were turning stretch of deserted bench and alligator swamp on the Florida const into one of the worlds two space launch centres Cape Canav eral was to become Cape Kennedy in soon to rival the vast and heavily guarded Russian cosmo dromes near Lake The Americans finally got two men into orbit with the flight of Gemini which took Virgil and John Young aloft for circuits in The same year Gemini set an eightday d urn record And also in the first space walks were made initially by Russias Alexei A Lcoiiov and Inter by Major lid White and others Tragedy struck spec pro gram in The Americans lost three brave pioneers in a fire in I heir Apollo capsule during a rou tine exercise And the Soviets a few weeks later suffered their first admitted death when their lust orbital flight ended in tragedy for the lone astro limit who failed to eject from his capsule as it plunged out of control to The deaths brought sober second thoughts to scientists and govern officials alike Was the ex of space really worth the cost in money and now in life that it seemed would have to he paid BEEN DATING FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS ITS C0STIN ME A FORTUNE The answer of course has to be yes The cost is high but we still no more know what we are buy ing than did Columbus when he stepped ashore in The New World any such fanciful flights become reality however the ardu ous costly job of getting to the moon and then the planets must be finished After lagging behind Russia for many years the US now appears to have drawn even in the lunar program while it forged ahead in other apace probes The moon has been photographed Mars orbited and this week both Rus sian and American space capsules were converging on Venus A soviet space extravaganza is being predicted for Novembers anniversary of the Russian Revolution Therell be no lunar landing next month but dont be surprised if the Soviets put a man on a roller coaster swing around the moon of mark half a century of Communism here on earth Co ton Crier By Elizabeth Reiler
