IS Era Wed October 17 Corn Prices Irk Growers TORONTO Ontario farm ers are looking for the facts behind the price of corn Their concern follows charges that they are being short changed by 17 cents on each bushel of this years corn they sen The charges were pre sented in a resolution passed at Septembers members meeting of the Ontario Feder ation of Agriculture The resolution sponsored by Clarence Nichols of the Ontario Seed Corn Growers Marketing Board charges that the price is being Kept artificially at per bushel According to the resolution the cost of transportation and exchange on the dollar should make the Ontario price cents more than that of free corn in Chicago Chicago price at the time the resolution was passed was per bushel which ac cording to the formula would give an Ontario price of is charged that on a million bushel com crop the farmers will lose 10 million by the time they sell their whole crop An committee has been formed to investigate the charges It has communi cated its concern to the fed eral and Ontario ministers of agriculture and is expected to meet with the provincial elevator association to discuss the question MOBILE GRINDING and mixing arc not hardy like those of the tulips and other spring flow ering bulbs and cannot be left In the ground from year lo year The best time to dig them is the last two weeks of Oc tober Youll not be digging the you planted last May and June but entirely new ones have developed since the flowering period ended Just In case you think Im being In us ing the singular form of glad iolus instead of the plural was decided by the International Gladiolus Soci ety some years ago the word gladiolus would be both sing ular and plural I have found it pays to re move all the foliage down to within two or three inches of the soil before you start dig ging For this purpose I use one of the snap type run ners which have a steel blade cutting down on a flat plate The foliage when clean and free from thrips and diseases can be to the home compost heap Otherwise the leaves will need to be burned to prevent rcinfeslnlioa next year The best Implement for limine gladiolus dah lias carinas etc Is a garden fork Youll do far less dam age with the latter than you would with a shovel By digging in late October the stems will still be firmly attached to the corms When you remove them from the ground youll see there is one large new conn several smal ler ones and some tiny little about size of garden pea which we call cor- Normally the average home gardener wouldnt bother to keep the because the One of he five per cent DDT dusts ore put out by several commercial firms should he dusted over the bulbs lust as soon as the soli has been removed and they have been put In a seedling storing the Hal or some other simitar make sure container Next remove them from the garden area even if the day is warm and sunny Choose a location Hints cool dry and where the air can circulate around them Quite naturally Ibis location should be in a spot where theres no danger Farm Report By Wall smaller will provide the frost A garage tool or pot- increase in stock is need- shed is ideal for this pur- ed Representative for York County Along with many York County com growers I took in the special Corn Day program this week at Leavers Farm near Com yield were high there this year Growth all through the season was good with lots of moisture on ft well drained soil I think the point thai came out most clearly was on plant populations close lo the right thickness of stand is a tricky business with varying sizes of seed and planter plates often not well suited to it With the same planter used at Leavers plants per acre with different hybrids ranged from about sixteen to forty thousand Rod of these extremes gave poor yields The problem costs us a lot of com every year Trials of different hybrids showed again that the early ones put up the most grain with less hulk for silage Corn here in York this year is generally quite good Silage put in last week had well matured grain and on well drained soils good tonnage too Richard Udora lias combined some already but only a little to get started We have some top crops on the east side of this year I expect that they will yield right up with crops in the south 1 1 in I have a higher heat unit rating Wet weather stopped wheat seeding last week Seeding after the first of October is a gamble and It has to he In by that date to he eligible for ranee However the date for insuring wheat bus been extended in Holier Insurance can he obtained from three agents in York Poll fairs wind up In York next weekend at Wood- bridge There are good attractions at Woodbridgo with increasing attendance In the last few years Plowing matches start next Saturday with the one for North York being held on Grant Wells farm in Whitchurch and plant them out next spring Alter digging and shaking nil Hie soil away the first thing to do Is to treat bulbs for gladiolus Here we have a tiny Insect which Is hard to see and which does a tremendous amount of dam age in comparison to Its size Its a sucking Insect which removes the plant juices from the leaves You can tell If have been attacking the leaves because it will create a silvery streaked con dition and the blossoms are often discolored blotched or deformed this time the remaining leaves will come easily to gether with the old conns which were pi tinted in the spring For Ihc average small gar den the best way to store idem is to place each variety in separate mediumsized pa per bogs To each bag odd of live per cent DDT dust Hie hag you use would ho about the same size as fivepound sugar bag lie sure and shake vigorously so that a fine coaling of the DDT dust will completely cover all sides the conns For amateur gardener who specializes in gladiolus wooden seedling flats are per- haps the best Ive also seen people who have made up special flats metal screening on the bottom In this way you dont place them more thai two or three deep In Hals or the I rays The Ideal temperature for storing gladiolus wilt be from to degrees hut this Is hard to achieve in most modern homes The tern can go higher with out loo much harm but a damp cellar should be avoided as this will provide the Ideal condition for diseases to start Ive found It pays to make thorough check every two or three weeks during the winter months for any un healthy conns which could quickly ruin your col lection It theres any doubt whatsoever discard them rather taking a chance WE BUY FURNITURE By Ontario increases more and more attention is on the involved in handling and harvesting ihe coin A majority of the grain corn is still harvested by picking the cobs and storing them in cribs This system while considered by some to be old fashioned has some advantages Not considering the labour required to handle the com it is cheap er to store in cribs than in grain bins on the farm Drying is nalrna and thus cheaper The coin is readily acceptable to all buyers Likely the major problem in crib storage is controlling birds and rodents However share of corn harvested by picker- shelters and by combines equipped with a com head Is globing rapidly And this does introduce some to First when you field shell your grain corn you should lei ihe corn get riper than corn that is to be harvested on the cob Experts say the ideal mat urity for field shelling is at Ihe percent mois ture level If you pick your corn harvesting ef ficiency is highest when corn is al per cent moisture Field shelling makes some means of drying absolutely essential unless you store it as high moisture corn in an airtight silo With the cool damp weather common at corn harvesting season moisture has to be removed from the corn Various drying systems are available You can have it cuslom dried where facilities exist in your area If you dont consider the initial cost of Die equipment for drying the actual drying operation costs about the some for or cus tom drying The integrated harvesting system a home dryer makes possible has some advantages But careful cost studies have shown that you cant afford to own dryer unless you put at least 10000 bushels a through it And in estimating the size of dryer you need allow for drying capacity about percent below your harvesting capacity This allows for matcbing drying harvesting capacities equally in case of down lime with harvesting equipment or lost lime due lo bad You will requite storage for wet coin equal to about one days harvesting capacity You will also need sufficient storage to turn Ihe grain corn occasionally to keep in good con dition A often overlooked too is most dry ing systems need a ampere hydro service on the funn Several types of dryers arc available on market Some are types some portable batch and some continuous flow dryers Next week Ill describe some of these diycrs and give the advantages and drawbacks with the dif ferent systems Switch to COOP FUEL OIL because we give you more than just fuel You get carefree heating all winter long When use CO- Of fool oil wo also give you COOP Homo Heat COOP Homo Hoot is a complete
