I 1 w rjJ fi The Era NewmarketAurora Out Wed Sept Institute Rally Urges Criminal Code Changes Queensville Members Visit WI Neighbors Church of the S This Centennial Year and Expo has brought to our minds that we live in a changing world Id so many areas of life we have seen fantastic change in the area of trans portation we changed from the horse and buggies to supersonic jets travelling in excess of miles per hour with plans in progress and having made trials of planes that can exceed 1 miles per hour In the area of home equipment we have moved from the drudgery of hand washing machines that required hours of toil to modern equipment that can wash and dry clothes without being removed from the machine Medical science has made tremendous strides with the discovery of antiboties and penecDin and the technique of open heart surgery which seemed impossible a half a century ago Change has brought advancement and in some areas the new has been so much better than the old But change for the sake of change is not necessarily beneficial To decide to change just so we say we are up to date is of no advantage The progress of our nation has been due to some basic factors in the life of its people The reason our nation has become great is a result of these- Other nations have risen and fallen Conrad said that any nation without God was doomed We have made progress in some areas but have retro gressed in others Crime is at an alltime high with a per centage increase each year Riots in our world have reached peak proportions Homes that have been made available for unwed mothers are jammed full We need to make pro gress in these areas How can we do it One of basic factors on which our country was established was a strong faith in and adherence to the Bible as the inspired word of God Christianity had a predominate place in the life of our forefathers The thou sands of little churches dotting our countryside speak of the importance of worship in previous generations In many homes and families worship is relegated to he past and the modern concept of the church is a place for infant dedication or baptism a place for weddings Man fundamentally has not changed and the purpose for which Jesus Christ died on Calvary is not out moaed Some sceptics in our day have questioned all the funda mentals of our faith Recently R PhD Chemist and Executive of the Pont Corporation said There has been a stepped up attack on the credulity of our basic Christian beliefs Most criticized arc the concepts concerning the specific crea tion of man the great flood the miracles of the Bible the Virgin Birth the inspiration of the Holy Bible the power of faith and prayer the immortality of the soul and the very existence of God I am convinced that new know ledge in many cases supports these basic beliefs rather than weakening them Jesus was able to meet the need of the people of the day of His earthly ministry and can meet our need in this day VANDORF The York County Rally of Womens In stitute members was held at Vandorf Hall on Sept 7 with attending Tne county rally delegates endorsed a brief from York Centre District which urged amendments to the Criminal Code to deal with battered babies Those failing to report assaults should be con sidered accessories to the crime it said and the full protection of the law afforded informants Also contained in the brief were recommendations that breakdown of marriage be considered grounds for di vorce Job retraining centres for older women it urged should be located in places other than large cities and all provincial programs should be standardized Highly regarded by many of the women was a resolution from the King branch that members of the WI give edu cation for peace a higher priority in their study groups It recommended that the In stitute Home Country contain suggestions for read ings and projects In order to stimulate public opinion in the cause of peace The brief will be sent to the Ontario body for forward ing to the Royal Commission on the status of women Chairman of the Committee which prepared the brief was Mrs George Richardson Vandorf Mrs Kellam the representative on the York
