a I I L I I If a 4 jr J i THE ERA WED SEPTEMBER VOL No Pat Poland One of Ontarios most respected policeman is retiring next week Pat Poland who has been head of the Bradford Ontario Provincial Police Detachment for years will be remembered for his delightful sense of humor and his stern enforcement of the law He immigrated from Ireland at and served all his adult life as policeman He is remembered in such communities as Barrie Beach to name a few Pat Poland hated speeders He hated them because they endangered the lives of the lawabiding a3 well as their own When he became head of the Bradford detachment he inherited Ontarios first super highway Highway Through strict enforcement of the speeding laws and imparting this thought to the officers under him Sgt Poland made Highway a safe road to travel Today thousands of motorists can drive to and from vacationland in relative safety thanks to men such as Pat Poland There should be more like him Study Bylaws has challenged the authority of Brown Camps Ltd to move emotionally disturbed children in to that municipality in contra vention of the townships zoning bylaws The Township of East Gwillimbury Newmarket and Aurora should make a careful study of their own bylaws in this respect and if they are being infringed in this manner then action should be taken In the Scarboro case a director of case work for Brown Camps stated that the emotional problems of these children are centred on their adjustment with their families and not with the community If this is so then there is little valid reason why the problem has to be accentuated by moving these young people into fairly densely populated urban areas If they are recovering to the point where they are expected to be absorbed Into community life they should be close to the stage where they are also able to assume some of the responsibilities of family life An alderman in Scarboro felt that the officials of Brown Camps moved in first and are now trying to explain their position This also seems to apply in East Newmarket and Aurora The alderman felt that the Planning Board should have been consulted first regarding any necessity for a change of zoning The basic move to funnel these children back into community life is understandable in theory but todays parents have a difficult enough job coping with the outbursts of their own children without having fuel added to the flames by the establishment of pockets of children who the directors say may have to be returned to the original centre for further treatment Dear Editor I was absolutely disgusted when I read the letter in your news paper from Ward Heeler I dont know either who deserves cuff on the lapel for the type of business referred to but I think the person who wrote the letter deserves a cuff on the ear for what I would call plain ignorance Just how sarcastic can some people be Id like to know how much education this person has had Its obvious he didnt take public relation course Maybe the old chap wasnt listen ing but the No Ward Heeler certainly was What business was it of his what was going on at his friends front door If anyone had a right to fill up your column with garbage like this I should think it would have been his friends place I dont believe that you have to be a faithful follower of a politician to be a enumerator Instead of letting someone fatten their bank book that doesnt need it we should be glad to see senior citizens with jobs Im sure Parkin and the Kediler will survive I would imagine the enumerator to must feel his neck titer rending about himself in the but then on the other hand Ward Heeler must have otherwise he would have Ids own name In defense of a senior citizen whom I do not know Mrs Joan Cochrane St Newmarket through being the wife of a rediler and since shes not the complainant in this case just be thankful she lives in a country of freedom where theres an opportu nity for all adult citizens to vote Also if the critic thinks our control of Mao Cultural Revolution and the seeds of separatism planted in such places as the big southern province of Kwangtung were blossoming into outright revolt China it seemed might be breaking up The rigid control of the Com munist Party had welded the an central kingdom into a nation bare years ago For the first time in half a century China was made whole The intervening years had seen he collapse of an empire the agony of invasion and world conflict and finally civil war which ended in Communist victory in The upheave spreading through out China will be resolved only with the absolute triumph of one side or the other in the Com schism which is said to have already taken thousands of lives The chaos and violence spawned by Mao Tsetungs youthful Red Guard has clearly given the Pek ing Government second thoughts Schools have been closed industry and agriculture paralyzed The Guard warned to leave peasants alone during the harvest on which China must depend for survival is still marauding the countryside according to reports Why this upheaval this Great Cultural Revolution which has wreaked havoc far in excess of the damages done by Maos other gran diose campaign the Great Leap Forward of 10 years ago I put this question recently to the ambassador to Canada of the Nationalistic Government of China the antiCommunist refugee re gime which governs the island of Taiwan Formosa in the name of the Republic of China Ambassador who likes to joke of Irish ancestry by ex plaining his name should be pro nounced Shea told mo the Cul tural Revolution was launched by Mao in answer to takeover bid by president Liu Shnochi Liu and Mao together hold two of tho top three jobs in Communist China The third premier appears so for to have carefully avoided Maos wrath may in fact be the sole national figure capable of holding the country party together convolutions of tho Great Cultural Revolution are too involv ed to dotail here But as well as being a struggle for power the new Revolution is clearly the last gasp attempt of a dying regime to instill fresh revolutionary fervor in tho nations youth For it is evident the revolution has already begun to turn against its makers do nil successful revolutions Tho Soviet Union went this same route but it took death of Stalin to release younger and more moderate elements with in the Party The break with the Soviet Union because Moscow had reached accord with West and thus must bo a traitor to Communism intensified the struggle within China Tho regimes achievement In nuclear weaponry has not les sened tho intensity of internal struggle Whilo tho US considers whether to build a missile system to fend off possible Chinese attack tho Cultural Revolution rages on It must bo the of tho Nationalist Chinese In exile on Taiwan since two million refugees fled under Chiang Kaisheka banner In that at last tho time has como for their return to the mainland For this to happen however the mainland must foil into complete THE MUFFLER KING disarray and chaos and even then the question of Soviet Intervention would be a most serious one It is more likely that Mao will lose his Great Cultural Revolution and then from the seeds of Chinas present nearanarchy will spring a regime with which the Nationalists could honorably collaborate The order and prosperity of Taiwan in past years gener ously bankrolled by the United States remains meanwhile a symbol of resistance to Commu nism in an Asia menaced by Chinas nuclear arsenal By Elizabeth Provincial elections are coming closer and it was never any harder to decide which way to go The electorate has had experience with promises in former years and teamed that usually these turn out to he burden on their pockets of doubtful benefit or remain promises forever At present the situation In the fields of education costs housing funds taxation and public spend ing is such that obviously nil parties agree that something must be done To choose between their different suggestions of how to tackle these highly technical prob lems is for the layman a con fusing and hopeless task It is no wonder that a surpris ing number of voters therefore support the candidate person and on face value to he left now speaking locally in just the same dilemma Our candidates stand for the same objectives on several topics that are on our minds from school assessment to the commuter service None of them however hits close enough to home that one could throw en thusiasm in with support vote True the issues are of wide scope this time however the man who goes to Queens Park will lie our only voice our only chance to grab a little from the provincial pie of which a share should rightfully he ours We need a lot of things to get on equal footing with other ridings in the Golden Horseshoe indus trially we are a blighted area The Province can help in the location of industry will if loud and long Our public housing despite statements to the contrary is not adequate when people on local wages cannot afford the rents and have to leave to say nothing of our welfare load Newmarket Is the County Scat yet lacking adequate facilities the Court already has had to look for temporary accommodation else where We need our Courthouse before this arrangement becomes too permanent With little pres sure from the provincial level the hall could finally start rolling in this direction We appreciate our candidates not making golden promises on local projects hut would help the voters to know they ran hope to benefit from choosing the man to represent them
