Toronto department store during The lady in the portrait has a certain enigmatic ex pression on her face which could be variously interpre ted by viewers and it is this look plus the present anony mity of the model which makes the portrait all the more intriguing says Mr Varley is possibly the greatest portrait artist who ever lived in Canada and this greatness stems from the fact that each of his portraits con veys its own particular ex pression of a real and living person with none of the blandness of the usual por trait he adds Varley had the faculty of being able to has captured more than a mood he has caught the in nermost of his subject Varley invariably titled the few portraits painted by him of young women with their first names For example one of his paintings Vera is owned
