We will soon be over from pasture to winter feeding and face changes in cows feed needs Dont rely too much on ill in picked- over pastures provide all the feed nutrients thai cow needs in the last weeks of the pasture sea son when pastures look good this time of year grass is lower in protein and lower in di gestible nutrients than it is earlier in the season these factors along with the miserable wealher lhat often is a part of the fall scene cause milk production slumps Once cows drop an average of few pounds a day as so many herds do between now and freeze up Ihcy usually continue along at about level and never really pull of the slump How much costs in lost milk production is hard to say dont it has been accurately calculated by any research scientist but it can cost you a lot of money Any feeder knows how much easier il is keep milk flow at a steady rate it is to boost it up to regular levels after a slump One practice that helps reduce ihe slump is give the cows plenty of forage hay in rack in the yard or silage from a bunk provides useful supplement to fall pastures As a matter of fact an increasing number of top dairymen follow this practice sum mer no matter how good the pasture The dry hay feed and the silage is lower in pro tein lhan grass The pasture will nol have as high a protein content as it did earlier In the season The grain will need more vitamin and mineral sup plementation now too Vilamin A in particular is quickly from hay once il is put into storage and from silage too We need to allow for in planning concentrate feeding program for herd As we move to higher energy dairy rations with little more of the feed from concentrates and less from roughage needs of cow change Research has that as a cow gels more gr ain mid less roughage her intake of Vitamin A cal cium phosphorus and possibly the vitamin is affected In recent years nutritionists have revised their recommendations on phosphorus content in rations In place of the former concept ihui a cow needed about half us much phosphorus as she need ed calcium many now strongly advise thai both mine rals he in about amounts With the rupid developments that place in dairy nutrition il is impractical for a far mer make his own supplements The farmer who docs not use properly balanced rat ions will be hard pressed to compete with the one who does because his production costs will be too high Adequate phosphorus pluys a key role in regularity of breeding Perhaps in a future column we discuss in a little more detail all impor tant question of mineral supplements In agriculture to the well being of the province and Improvements in farming techniques At a dinner held at the Con tinental Inn Barrie Arnold Vancise outlined plans for the fourday program October Mr Vancise told represen tatives of the press and tele vision also some 50 other guests that the Simcoe com mittee proposed to set up scholarships for county stu dents from funds derived from the Cost of never quiet Joy of dancing daffodils Daffodils are not a product of modern times Even before the Christian era the narcissus- was mentioned in the writings of Sopnocles and Homer Visitors to an exhibi tion of Greek art will notice that the Greeks used narcis sus as a motif in many art forms Whats the difference be tween a daffodil and a narcis sus Again this is not a new question by any means Over 300 years ago the English hor ticulturist John Parkinson wrote many idle and ignorant gardeners do call some of Ihe daffodils narcissus when as all that know any Latin realize that narcissus is the same thing The simple fact is the Farm Report a By Wall Agricultural Representative for York County Hopes for frostfree September partly went out the window early in the month Frost last Monday and Tuesday hit some corn fields from Newmarket north Damage was quite varied and fairly serious in some fields to be harvested for grain Some corn was cut for silage Inst week The early birds often come out second a heat when it conies lo silo filling Nice green silage looks good but if the grain isnt mature and the moisture is too high cattle wont eat it well and its value as feed will be low The target for silage is to have the grain in full dent and the plant matured and dried out lo some degree at least Plants with the top leaves frosted dry make good silage However if loo much drying occurs the fermentation doesnt work right it may not keep well Additives for corn silage are always of interest The two that we hear most about now are lime stone and urea The reason for adding limestone is that it is responsible for the formation of organic acids in the silage which can he used efficiently by cattle for energy However most feed trials show only minor im provements In beef cattle gains Urea is a protein substitute that can cut the cost of supplements There arc drawbacks however For early filling the silo may run with some urea going down the barnyard Or it may seep down and become concentrated in the bottom Mixing has to be well done For large silos and well matured tillage urea is worth consideration More and more bunker and pit silos are being used and some type of cover can solve the spoil age problem To do the job the cover has to go on just as soon as the silo is filled If spoilage gets started it will keep going Black plastic at ft cents per square foot October the selection Is quite limited Theres not loo much hurry to get most of the spring flowering bulbs into the ground However daffodils need planting as soon as pos sible in September because sentative for Ontario County Mr a native of Grey County is a grad uate of the Ontario Agricul tural College served In the- Extension Branch as Assistant Agricultural Repre sentative and for past several months has been acting Agricultural in District of Rainy River while Agri cultural Representative Dan Rose formerly of Newmarket returned lo university to ob tain Masters Degree Mr commenced bis duties on September of the springflowering bulbs Reports from Holland earlier in ihe summer stated the bulb crop and its quality was the best in years Having seen the stocks of several of our leading dealers I can hon estly say that tho quality of seasons bulbs is the best Ive ever seen One of the big mistakes that a great many home gardeners make with daffodils Is to plant them singly The only satis factory way Is to plant them in clumps of seven or more You have to plant in fairly largesized clumps in order to create the best effects in the foundation planting mix ed border rock garden or nat uralizing in the woods Be sure and plant a fair number of several types of daffodils to provide cut flow ers for the house for dry ing in silica gel Daffodils dried In the latter chemical are preserved in an almost fresh condition make exciting addition to any dried flower arrangement The preparation of the soil is not difficult and you dont need to go to any more trouble than you would if you were going to plant a petunia or a tomato The soil in which you plant the daffodils should be one third humus Dont Use manures for peat moss is the preferred form of humus Planting depth of daffodils varies the type of soil In heavy soils set them inch es deep measured from the tip of the bulb Plant inches deep in light sandy soils Space the bulbs six inches apart Daffodils need sunshine tor at least part of day but youll find the scarletcupped varieties and the pink ones will keep their color longer and better If partly in the shade At the time of the first there were varieties of daffodils grown commer cially Today there arc over available TRY MARIAS TONIGHT phone for fast delivery main nkwmarkkt Fertilize Grassland this Fall Profit more next year You con double
