prime interest especial ly this year with the site only a few miles north of Brad ford is the International Plowing Match to be held Some Good Tips For Better Winter Crops NEWMARKET Farmers growing winter wheat are urged to purchase new seed stocks this year according to Dr N C Stoskopf Crop Sci ence Department University of This year seed qua lity has been lower because of fungus diseases such as Take all and Scab and poor harvesting conditions which have caused sprouting Dam aged seed should be replaced with pedigreed seed Soil borne fungus diseases have built up considerably this year so growing wheat on wheat fields may result in poor yields Crop rotation with such crops as winter barley would help avoid some of the disease problems Treating seed with fungi cides is most important this year because of the disease buildup Fungicides which of fer adequate protection to seeds and seedlings are avail able Talbot and Genesee are the two recommended varieties of winter wheat in Ontario Seed supplies for both varie ties are adequate for all grow ers requiring seed replace ment In harvest results generally favored Talbot over Genesee because Talbot has greater lodging resistance which results in higher yields Timely seeding of win ter crops is important par ticularly if winter barley is grown Good root development and top adequate growth in creases the winter survival of these crops An extremely winterhardy crop which can be put in quite later in the season is rye- If winter crop planting is de layed for some reason rye is a crop which should be con sidered October to Plowmen of this area who have partici pated in the various events other years will again be competitors Closer to home the North York Plowmens Association will hold their annual it certainly is time to make sure you have everything ready when the time comes Winter wheat has proven to be a most useful crop for many Ontario farmers It is what we might call a good two- way crop It puts up a good yield of high energy feed grain that you can use in rations for any kind of livestock That in cludes dairy cattle too Many Ontario dairymen have fed or per cent wheat in their grain ration for years with good results At the same time good quality wheat is readily sale able as a cash crop if you prefer or need to use it rhat way at harvest time Wheat provides a substantial amount of bedding too if you keep livestock The real purpose in planning this column was to talk about how to ensure that the wheat gets ofF to good start this foil It will be less subject to winter kill and more likely to achieve maximum yield That wheat field will get off to a better start if the seed goes into a good seed bed This is especially true if we get a dry fall Choosing the best variety to sow is important has been the principle variety for several years but now a new introduction Talbot is gaining wide acceptance The two varieties are rated about equal on all counts but the experts usually give a slight overall edge to Talbot They advise using Talbot if seed is available Having gone all the trouble of preparing the Held and sowing the crop he sure you use good seed The only way to be absolutely sure whether it be fall wheal or spring grain is to use pedigreed seed The pedigree lag on the bag ensures that you get the variety you ask for that it is healthy vigorous seed and is pure from variety mixtures You know you con depend on it and that it will produce a vigorous uniform crop There is so little difference between the cost of greed seed and supplies that nobody to day can really afford to gamble So for we havent said anything about fertilizer If you bad a soil test here are some thumb rules that may help On sandy soil if you havent plowed down man ure this year you will likely need about pounds of per acre along with pounds and pounds of On clay soils you can cut the potash in half This means that COOP at pounds per acre should applied to light soils and at the some rale on heavy soils where lodging usually is a problem or when the wheat follows a legume sod it is best to out the nitrogen using or at about pounds per acre If the field received a coat of manure you con reduce the fertilizer to pounds per acre of or 0 20 depending on whether it is light or heavy soil Farm Report By Al Wall Agricultural Itepresentalive for York County Newmarket Weeds have had a wonderful chance to get ahead this year Regular spraying couldnt be done and they thrived on a good supply of moisture Fall cultivation will be lim ited and it doesnt work too well anyway in moist soils Quack grass is probably the most serious weed It can be killed with chemicals at this time of year but its hard to get the conditions just right Quack grass must be green and growing with temperatures still fairly warm This way or will kill both tops and roots reliably They wont work on dry quack stubble though and chances arent good either it spraying cant be done until very late in the fall If good growth keeps up its quite likely that we will have a good chance to spray Even spot treatment can stop patches from spreading and keep fields in production Many other biennials or perennials could be killed this fall too 2 at high rates or even could be used safely to clean up thistles bindweed wild carrot burdocks and black medic There arc many good reasons for putting on fertilizer now On hay and pasture it will boost fall growth and strengthen plants for winter On fields being plowed for corn next year enough fertilizer can be plowed down to save special applications that delay planting next spring New forage seedings with lodged grain just combined off have taken a beating Fertilizer will help to get them going again An analysis like at even a low rate might save enough plants to make a stand Its a good question now whether to cut second crop hay or not Legumes should really be let grow in September However this season has licen out of gear with the calendar all along and If the hay is needed I think its good gamble to cut and then fertilize Pasturing Is a different story Get A New water GET 10TS AND LOTS AND LOTS of HOT WATER for ONLY A DAY CANADIAN
