v- J iim-i- w I r a f p L THE ERA WED AUGUST VOL No 36 The Dreamers It has been a weird and wonderful summer And perhaps the weirdest thing to happen this summer is defeated Tory candidate Donald decision to make an application for a television license to serve what he calls the Lake Simcoe area Next in line for weird happenings is a statement by Mr political bedfellow Senator Wallace that if elected Prime Minister he would postpone a national medicare plan indefinitely and probably abolish the baby bonus Both of these gentlemen are dreamers and Mr Martyn has as much chance of obtaining a license to operate a television channel as Senator McCutcheon has of becoming Prime Minister of Canada Mr Martyns application for a TV license is frivolous He says that he has a group of financial backers one of whom he says is NOT Senator McCutcheon Who then are the financiers Mr is a York University lecturer and has no experience in broadcasting Who then would run his Lake Simcoe television station Mr Martyn in making the announcement that he is seeking a television license made no mention where he would locate his trans mitter Perhaps his Township farm Mr Martyn obviously knows that operating a television station costs money and that television station owners pay their costs by selling time Channel minimum rate is PER SECOND What merchant in the Lake Simcoe area not buying time of Channel could afford to pay that high cost to advertise his wares Now Senator McCutchcons plea that the merciless rape of the Canadian taxpayer must stop is commendable But his statement that he would probably wipe out the baby bonus is foolish Perhaps Senator McCutcheon is unaware sitting in his King St offices just off Bay St in Toronto just what the baby bonus means to most families Surely he must know that the baby bonus pumps the largest single amount of money into a community each month Surely the Senator knows that mothers gear their spending to its arrival and that baby bonus week is a merchants biggest week of the month The baby bonus which started as political bribe by the Liberals during World War is now a fact of Canadas economic life Abolishing the baby bonus would result in economic chaos and mean political suicide Surely both Mr and Senator are dreaming Curb Hazards Visitors to Newmarket who wish to park their cars on Main St must Inevitably reach the conclusion that there are some residents who resent such visits or else the town is aspiring to a record for untidiness Broken glass and partially crushed cans originally holders of soft drinks litter the gutters especially Sunday mornings presenting a definite danger to automobile tires We realize it is not possible for the towns oneman street cleaning force to get around to all areas before airs park In the downtown area and of course Sunday presents a different situation so obviously there could be some gutter sections with broken glass to snare some unwary motorist The greatest claim to this reputation is between Timothy and Streets because this short block has two stores which sell soft drinks to consumers who drink on the sidewalk and carelessly dispose of the bottles without regard for the safety or convenience of others The police have been active recently in curbing loitering in the vicinity of these stores They should now be given the authority to crack down on Die element which delights in breaking bottles Dear I read in Inst weeks Bra that theres some talk of putting on a sportsmens show in Kcswkl think that would be a splendid idea attended last weeks trade show at Keswick and enjoyed it very much If the same people put on a sportsmens show Im Hiiro that it too will be enjoyable Why not go one stop more and make It a combined car and show Fred Una worth THE ERA So vino County SI All you need to enjoy the big fair thoroughly is about three weeks and a pair of legs made of steel springs did it in three days on with legs that rapidly turned to putty if it is possible for putty to ache like bad tooth We took off right after church lust Sunday As usual right- afterchurch gradually turned into pm Drove miles Stay ed with sisterinlaw time no sec Big palaver until am Hogged time 230 am Up bright and early and off at the crack of noon as Gene had promised It was only an hours drive from Expo He- biggest joke of trip Ho obviously meant by jet or straight acrosscountry My car goes hotter on highways lust follow Expo signs it said Wo did Wo completely surrounded the city of Montreal and wound up In a parking lot which was a minute ferry ride from Expo The lots are five to ten minutes from the grounds ferry cost person The other lots provide a freo bus ferry dumped us at wrong end of Expo Just ten miles from where wo wanted to be At pm wo were at Expo Nover mind we finally picked up my press pass Tho press build was a little bit of heaven airconditioned food and drink rea sonable Slightly revived and just about the time I had thought wed be heading for home we started out to do Expo As always with our family there were no plans no organisation Wc went into the first building we saw It was the International Building Fascinat ing perhaps for an engineer For us it was slightly less absorbing than a visit to the local library Tho fighting began here Kim is at the age when she abhors being dragged around by her pa rents Her first proposal was Lets split meet somewhere Would you turn loose your lfi- chick in a crowd of in an area the size of a largo city when none of us had a clue about how to get back to the ferry So wc sulked our way through the telephone building Its a dandy show And it was here that I first discovered that my press pass made Aladdins Lamp look like an old candle butt I just took it out and kissed it as I write See there arc these people lined up four abreast for a quartermile With a press pass you walk to the head of the line flash the pass and your party is admitted at the rewved en trance immediately along with people in wheelchairs and comas and other conditions The first time did fell like real skunks I expected the enraged types In the lineup to stream and rave or threaten to tear us to pieces Nothing hap pened The second time I fell like Charles Gaulle After that lost all compunction for the standees and began looking for pavilions with the longest line ups for the sheer pleasure of gate crashing Such is man Russian pavilion next Beautiful lineup Pavilion was rather like a vast department store specializ ing In spacetravel equipment My wife collapsed Into a chair on the third floor and a number of people thought alio was having a stroke By sheer good luck wo found our way home ami hurtled that one hour from Expo in only hours after missing turnoff to Alox and wandering about wilds of Eastern Ontario for an hour Bed at am t By Ray The While Tory leadership hopefuls made their final crosscountry forays last week in search of support among Conservative Party convention delegates the Old Chief continued to dismay his rivals John who will be next week began to sound as if he might finally be stepping down But he continued to tanta lize the party and the country by remaining mum on where he will throw his support when the delegates ballot by machine Satur day at Toronto Maple Leaf Gar dens As of this writing Mr remained uncommitted over the leadership race But he has stressed again and again there are certain people within the party who are just not acceptable to his radical brand of conserva tism When Mr Diefenbaker speaks to the Conservative convention this Thursday night with the eyes and ears of the nation on him via TV and radio he will have three clear choices His first is to simply blow out gracefully secure in the knowledge that he brought the Tories out of their political wilderness in and made them a party of the for the first time in half a century Or determined as he may be to pursue his political career to the bitter end he may announce his determination to stand for reelec tion a course that would throw the convention into bitter dis unity Or finally he could hope to retain his influence within the party by giving his blessing to one of the nine committed candidates or even to a durkhorsc as yet in the race Rumors out of Montreal last week spoke of Mr having decide to nominate the citys mayor and the Father of Expo Jean as his successor Mayor is known to be anxious to finish his job of re building Montreal but it is equally sure he would find eager support right across Canada should be decide to enter federal Ever since Mayor so eloquently put Gen to rights about Quebecs future as part of Canada he has been some thing of a hen among everyone but Quebec separatists The delicious prospect of con founding Tory establishment such a nomination is hound to appeal to Mr Diofonbahcr especially if a deadlock developed among the lending candidates Mayor would look more and more like the man to solve leadership dilemma The probability is however that Mr will take a less dramatic course Tho likelihood is that he will dcelaro his support for one of the present candidates And in making his stand known the Chief will once again throw down a gauntlet to the Influential business circles of eastern Canada Mr IHercnhakor changed the Conservatives from a stodgy un imaginative party of the status quo to one which for a time at least was able to harness the con fidence of Canadians from all walks of life It can ho expected therefore that Mr form chart on the candidates will look some thing like this Sen Wallace MeCutchcon Fast on Bay but hopeless on Main Overweight with big support Donald Fleming Prefers the far right side of the track an uncomfortable position for John Unknown entry out of not worth wasting a thousand teachers bracing themselves to guide another crop of tots through lifes first trials of buttoning jackets scar ves and trying to fit well behaved into the groundfioor of society its was the sighing of million mothers whose lives are turning back to normal pace The regular ordeal of every pre school season to get the children Into decent clothes seemed worse than ever despite the bargain hunt ing through tons of advertising sheets that had bulg ing and postmen walking on their knees An early rummage sale by some organization would have help ed greatly at this time of the year Looking around the prices are creeping up the sizes shrinking In the same relation from year lo year Its proved a fact lhat a hoys snowcoat size eight four years ago will favorably stand up In measurements to
