collision course at a meeting of the board Monday night but each group managed to steer clear of a crash at the crucial moment The evening ended with the school board going into committee of the whole and most of the ratepayers going home The purpose of the meeting was to try and iron out differences contained in a brief prepared by Mrs Lillian McAdam and sup ported by some of the Township public school supporters There were many heated arguments be tween Mrs and Morris Smith the chairman of the board before Mr Smith finally declared the formal meeting ended and requested the public to leave as the board was going Into committee to discuss teacher hiring and other personal matters The only person present who managed to make any kind of continued speech was Trustee Norman Fockler and this was in the final stages of the meeting AXE TO GRIND Mr said I have wondered just what this delegation is after I feel very strongly that somewhere there is an axe to grind There have been charges levelled a me and find it difficult to ascertain the reasons for all this It has been stated that with other members of this board have discriminated against students in the Lake Wilcox area this is untrue At no time was it said that these children would not be allowed to at tend the proposed new senior public school We have a big Job to do and I do feel sometimes that Mrs McAdam feels that we are here for her own personal satisfaction we may not do everything according to parliamentary procedure as someone here has stated but we are trying to Iron out dif ficulties and need the sympathetic under standing of the ratepayers rather than abase At the start the meeting Mr Smith ac knowledged the brief sent by Mrs and noted that copies had also been sect to Hon John Robarts and to the Attorney Generals Office Perhaps Mrs McAdams has the right procedure said Mr Smith but throughout ft all sbe certainly implies that Trustees and Metivn Baker have been very unscrupulous Mrs McAdam suggested that the minutes as she read them in the office of the board secretary John were not as presented at a meeting of July Mr was ab sent from Monday nights meeting at Bal- lantrae Public School as he was on vacation Another member of the board Mrs Irene Bacon was also absent Mrs McAdam challenged Mr Baker to give her a reply when she asked If certain work had been approved by the board prior to payment Following some rather heated exchanges Mr Baker said that no money had been spent before approval of the board but there were circumstances when urgency re quired work done before the board could meet again HEDGING THE QUESTION Trustee Wesley stated when questioned regarding the drilling of a well at Armitage School that he had telephoned Mr Baker objecting to the proposed drilling of a 7inch casing and the cost of per foot but he had been told that the contract had already been signed Mrs McAdam still maintained that work had been finished before final approval of the board You are continually hedging and trying to run around the question she told Mr Baker She accused Mr Smith of having a won derful memory for forgetting when he could not recall some of the incidents mentioned Mrs McAdam also objected when Mr Smith told he audience that some of the questions contained in the brief would not be answered as he understood legal action might be pend ing on some of them NEWMARKET The problem of bands of loiterers on Newmarkets Main Streat causing Town Council and the Police Depart ment some concern according to the report of the Administration Group presented to Town Council At the present time there is no local by law in this regard and the passing of a by law would have to be carefully considered as it would conflict with sections of the Crim inal Code and make the laying of charges more confusing At last weeks Town Council meeting Councillor Tom Surgeoner urged council to take some action on the problem Through the media of the local press great publicity was given to the Town of Aurora some time ago when the wife of the may or was involved following the passing of such a bylaw It seems unfair that tittle publicity has been given to this matter since Investiga tion shows that loitering in Aurora is at a minimum at the present time With a business situated on the Main Street am per turbed and I am sure most other merchants are regard ing the disgusting language and behaviour of some of these groups When I came to this coun cil meeting tonight there were about young men gathered in a group near the pool hall One was playing a mouth or gan while the rest provided the chorus and audience It Is becoming increasingly barassing for other residents to travel certain sections of Main Street Council agreed that the matter should be discussed In detail with the police chief and some form of control should be instituted discussed in detail with the police chief and some form of control should be instituted A bylaw regarding loitering was passed in but was rescinded in because it conflicted with a section of the Criminal Code and to proceed with a charge was difficult and frustrating Charges under the Criminal Code can also present difficulties as there are clauses In volving certain procedures by the police and there must be witnesses which again involves legal technicalities If a young person is charged and convict ed under this section of the Criminal Code the stigma of the charge would be on his records for rest of his life Ninos SUBMARINE SANDWICHES Store Hours Tues Wed Thur pm to am Sat Noon to 1 am Closed Sunday
