A National Anthem Next Saturday Dominion Day would be an appropriate day for Prime Minister Pearson to announce that Canada at last has a anthem But he wont because he is a politician Instead we Canadians will be befuddled and bewildered about what to sing as we celebrate our country birthday Some of us will sin God Save The Queen Some will sing O Canada Some will sing The Maple Leaf Forever Some will sing The Queen AND Canada Some will sing The Queen AND the Maple Leaf Forever Some may sing Canada AND The Maple Leaf Some may EVEN sing The Queen AND Canada AND The Maple Leaf Talk about a crazy mixed up musical program Talk about confusing our visitors from the US and abroad who are visiting Expo and will no doubt attend some of our Dominion Day celebrations See these visitors popping up and down out of their chairs as first one then two and perhaps three national anthems are played See the musicians shuffling their sheet music to find the appro priate anthem See the tuba player chasing a piece of sheet music across afield As we said earlier Dominion Day would be an appropriate moment for Canada to have a national anthem We are sure that most Canadians have a preference for one of our anthems Canada seems to be the most popular as more and more organizations sing it at their meetings and more and more functions play It at the start of festivities But the politicians in Ottawa will continue their waffling and ostrichlike behaviour about a national anthem for Canada If it is ever brought on the floor of the House of Commons the yammering will be reminiscent of the flag debate And you can be sure Mr will get into the act 4 Canadians this weekend celebrate the greatest event in their coun trys history but there will no frenzy of national emotion or outpouring of flagwaving patriot ism Instead the Centennial of Con federation will be marked across the land with armies amusements balls and barbecues field days and fishing cen tury be expected to another decade without drastic changes J Colon By For those who care about U Happy Centennial to everyone and hope to see yon out it the j parade Saturday and CASTLES REBIRTH Canadas only Cenlury restored castle has Confederation the creation of a new construc tion to replace the British North America Act At the heart of this question is the relationship between the pro vincial governments and Ottawa and the roles that each should play in Confederation It is because these governments have been un able to agree on how changes should be made in the BNA Act note that I said how not what changes that Canada has left the Act to this day in the hands of the British Parliament Bat it seems evident that the final rewriting or substitution of the Act with a distinctively Canadian constitution will be achieved in the next decade in the street It be see the town done up In flats aid decorations parade route nkmg Davis Drive and Main Street A little dress ing up does to beost the spirit and this is the one occasion of our lifetime to take part in Canadas birthday A- So let us put aside for this day the worries and grave v We have a flag now And its a fine flag How about it Mr Pearson now that we have a flag how about national anthem Improvement Needed Jupiter has been well employed again this past few days to the dismay of many householders who have found they own indoor swim ming pools and many outofdoors areas have been flooded One area which is wet and generally stays that way for a lengthy period is the east end of Lions Park With the water lying there it is evident it is not fit for any use but at other parts of the park noticeable particularly in the flat area south of the new amphitheatre the unsuHpecting pedestrian suddenly finds a spongy condition which results in wet feet Thla year the weatherman is to blame in part but town officials knowing the tendency of this area to remain wet should also shoulder some of the blame The east end of the park should have fill to bring up the area to a suitable drainage level This could be done now an most of its use is a short cut If found small drainage ditch could be cut to link with the main ditch adjacent to the roadway The matter of improved drainage for the park as a whole could be a project worthy of attention in the fall when use of the park is reduced No doubt like many town maintenance projects Improvement of lions Park will call for engineering services Newmarket has a town engineer so this work should be placed on his agenda now for immediate planning and implementation at the earliest nobble date Responsibility I The apex of Centennial activities planned for Newmarket will be reached this weekend representing many hours of work by the towns Centennial Program Committee by many organization and Individuals Some 20 organization will bo represented in the parade the high light perhaps of the lengthy program which Includes ball games and a street dance Since we are years old this week I should be grinding out an Ode to Canada But its so hot the very thought of it makes me feel about 100 years ode Come on Smiley it aint that hot Instead lets have an honest look at ourselves to find out what kind of a tribe those ten decades pro duced Trying to pin down the Cana dian national character is like trying to thread a needle in the dark blindfolded and halfstoned Trouble is any way you add up the individual characteristics they come out spelling schizophrenic For example the experts tell us that we are an extremely inarti culate people That means we dont talk much Maybe Wk because we havent anything worth and are too proud to show our ignor ance Hut at the same time we are the worlds champion yak- According to the telephone companies Canadians spend more time on the blower than any other nation proportionately Yes Jack my wife does too Undoubtedly thin this is a backlash from pioneer days when women often went for weeks without a chance for a good talk with another woman Theyre trying to catch up Another contradition In pione ering exploring wars we have shown ourselves bold adventure some brave Yet we are timid investing our money In Can ada and we also buy more in surance per capita than any other country Why this caution this de sire for security Theres some thing Freudian about It mother- country breastfed too long re turn to the womb or something Hut we havent time to figure that one out today We arc as materialistic as we could be and with some reason It takes more than a century to got from sod shanty to sonata from barnraising to ballet At the same time wo are extremely culture- conscious and are secretly delight ed with the Stratford Festival and the National ami our sprink ling of symphony orchestras As long wo dont have to attend Despite our revorenco for cul ture wo refuse to read Tho quick est way to lose your shirt in Can ada Is to open book storo In a population of million a new book that sells copies is a runaway bestseller It must be a hangover from the pioneer atti tude that a person should be do ing something and that reading doesnt come in this category Or is it because we have too much money and too many toys Something else we refuse to do is walk Europeans enjoy walking Englishmen love it Why wont we Our trouble probably is in equal parts too for to anywhere want ing to get there in a hurry car- worship and plain laziness We are heavy boozers as the statistics show and cant hold our liquor as a glance around at the next party will show Why Do we drink so much because we are so dull we cant stand each other without the grape Or is it be cause drink has always been as sociated with sin in this country and man ia born to sin Yes we play hard and most of us work hard The sad thing is that the only reason we work hard Is to enable us to get the things with which to play hard boats and barbecues and builtin bars cottages and cars and curl ing memberships Arc we a religious people Well we have vast numbers of churches of every conceivable denomination most of them tottering on tho brink of bankruptcy But wo are decent enough to leave God in church where he belongs He Is rarely mentioned on weekdays and usually then only as a prefix for another word We are without prejudice and have laws to prove It Hut lets go on being honest and admit the nation riddled with prejudice based on race religion language color politics and money Dont Just try joining one of thane exclusive Jewish clubs If you happen to be Mack Muslim Or gelling a teaching Job In a French convert school if youre a Jewish Eskimo Wo a few other little quirks but I wouldnt trado my Canadian citizenship for four million In gold bull inn How about you ThcroH a topic for your guest column In our Centennial Save- Smiley Content Prize la now cash Got cracking The plain fact of course ia that this would have been done a long time ago but for the special posi tion of one Province Quebec And Quebec no longer thinks of itself as a ethnic minority but instead as a majority society in that part of Canada with complete control over its own social structure The process of obtaining com plete control for the French Cana dian society or nation in Que bec began when Quebec withdrew from federallyfinanced programs in fields which under the BNA Act come exclusively under pro vincial jurisdiction By giving up this federal aid Quebec obtained the right to levy a larger percent age of the provinces taxes The aim of Quebec today and this will likely remain no matter which party is in power is to win absolute control over educa tion oldage security family allow ances health labor matters and cultural affairs This includes the right to do business directly with other governments be they Cana dian or foreign within these fields Having set out these boundaries of influence one can expert Que bec to extend it as its primary aims are achieved Is Quebec to be given a special status not enjoyed by others prov inces with Confederation Or in order to maintain all provinces on an equal level must the powers of the Federal Government be curbed by giving to all provinces the rights which Quebec insists must be its Opponent of the special status Idea say this would prove Intoler able to the rest of the country that the rest of the country would have nothing to say about what went on in Quebec but Quebec would have just aa much as ever to say about what went on in the rest of the country It equally obvious how ever that the transfer of added powers to all provinces or as it might be call ed would produce economic and political disarray in Canada Then arc thoso who would j leavo things just as they are But obviously this Is not to be done ferns that burden divide the harmony people All the anxiety to find the right words for air an them the dread to to learn our brothers or children the of religious Indoctrination In out schools discrimination against the Individuality of grooming and at- l tire the shameful settle ments of strikes and wages and even the outrageous new ideals searched for and demonstrated by our younger generation and the oppression suffered from a sovereign for this out day they should be banned from our national and personal mind and let us count our blessings While major parts of our planet are entangled In bloody conflicts thousands of people are put home less and roam lands devastated by draught flood epidemics and fire or are starving on an unpro ductive soil while not far away so many sons and brothers are sent in arms to countries they never heard of or ever wished to set to fight for causes as debatable as nowadays and white mil- llona are foraaktn lor color or faith we for thin one day just take a leave from even our enterprises awl thoughts to help in all this misery and join the neighbor with a face to celebrate This day should be the one to think of unity and of tradition of which there will be a display in the parade to suit everyones of what thinks be his Canada This bit cheered and saluted and explained to children may help them to a Canadian Identity which we stew at a loss to grasp willing the day shall never corns when we know what it was Those responsible for the planning and those participating In the various events have done their towards making Newmarket vanes of Canadas Centennial an event worthy of the town All that remains now is for the citizens to recognize Canadas birth day and support the Centennial Committee by showing Interest In the program as a whole and attending some of the events WOULD LIKE THE PIECE
