members j A Marine Artist From Canadas Present KESWICK Marine painting with their glorious portrayal of ships seas weather and have long been a source of Interest in formation entertainment and delight- To mention Montague Dawson Frank Vining Smith Anton Otto Fish er Robert Woods and Jack Gray is merely beginning the long list of renowned marine art ists whose works are known the world over v- Many of these artists have gained their recog nition through specializ ing in a certain field of marine art For example Montague Dawson is famous for his works on the old clipper ships and Robert Woods for his scenes It was only recently learned by The Era of a level of achievement and degree of recognition reached in a difficult and highly technical field of marine art by artist Ted Leonard of Keswick Mr Leonard not only specialize In the paint- fag of existing modern but he Is noted for sharply detailed and extremely accurate portrayal of those ves sels Early in 1966 his work was brought to the at tention of officials of the Shipbuilding Branch De partment of Transport in Ottawa There his work was checked out as fully mea suring up to the exact ing requirements of the Department and his ser vices were then recom mended by them to the various shipyards across Canada engaged in build ing Department of Trans port ships Naval architects tech nical directors and ad ministrative officials of the shipyards then con tacted Mr Ieonard re questing samples of his work which he submit ted As a result Leonard re ceived his first commis sion in March of I960 and now holds several commiasions ranging through an interesting assortment of graphioweatherships ice breakers search and re scue vessels sounding vessel and other Coast Guard Ships The paintings of these ships hang in the gov ernment buildings In Ottawa and Leonards painting of the VANCOUVER the photo of which appears on this page is display ed in the office of the Assistant Deputy Minis ter of Marine Depart ment of Transport in our nations capital city An extensive procedure is involved In the turn ing out of a vessels painting The ship is photograph ed in black and white and color during her con tractors and official sea trials These photos and a set of the ships exterior plans and considered other reference material is then turned over to Leonard After a preliminary sketch and the photos and other comments and observations are check ed out by naval archi tects the painting mea suring SO by inches gets under way The painting Itself re quires weeks of concen tration and painstaking effort with strict atten tion to ships design and purpose all its fittings and equipment and crew etc all appropriately set off by suitable sky sea weather conditions and background Absolute color control has to be maintained throughout The finished painting is framed an identifying brass engraved plate is affixed and the painting is packed and sent off to the shipyard architects check the painting out and it Is then shipped off the Ottawa Ted Leonard is not a stranger to many Era readers For years as a reporter and news photographer he covered a large part of southern Ontario for the Toronto Star His column Time out for adventure ran for some time in this paper When he decided to make marine painting his career he took over the apartment over Daw sons Marina Showroom in Keswick for a studio There he studied ma rine painting in his spare time between news as signments and turned out many paintings of private yachts Four years ago he part ed with his news work to go in for ma rine painting He founded the South Shore Artists Workshop enrolling over child teenage and adult stu dents Last summer when his shipyard committments demanded his full atten tion he had to give up his art classes And now as Mr Leo nard says he eats sleeps breathes and thinks no thing but ships works himself into nervous ex haustion and loves every minute of it An interesting observa tion as to Leonards art background is that he graduated as a commer cial artist in the early and hungry thirties right in the middle of the depression He never able to get into art not until he determined after a lapse of many years to go all out after that ma rine painting career KESWICK Ted Leo nard loves water He lives within sight of the waters of Lake has sailed on it for more than IB years and now makes a living painting the Canadian ships that sail Canadas lakes Mr Leonard has been a Keswick resident since his childhood He first came to the Keswick Kii area with his parents to their cottage in the 1920s when the best method of travel was by the Metro politan Railroad from Toronto He liked Keswick so much that he moved from Toronto to Keswick about years ago He purchased some prop erty on Old Homestead Road and he and his wife built a rambling California ranchstyle bungalow by themselves His original intention in moving to Keswick to pursue a career in writing fiction books But he soon turned his talents to painting specializing in his love of water marine scenes and the shipa that Bail the lakes Before he turned his talents to painting Mr Leonard was a reporter- photographer for the To ronto Star He also wrote a column Time Out For Adventure for The Era and Express His pretty wife Doreen born in the mov ed with her family to Toronto when she was an infant She shares her husbands Interest in painting but her main love is in music and anti ques She mixes her in love of antiques with busi ness and operates a small antique out of a log cabin located at the front of the onequarter acre property The Leonardo have one child Metodey who in herited her mothers love of music but not her fa thers talent for paint- The 15yearold Grade Sutton District High School student has won five South Shore Music Festival award for sing- I She prints says Mr Leonard but she paints abstracts 1 Mr style of painting toward the realistic Now that painting ships is taking more and more of his time Mr
