Hya cinth or Glorlosa Lily in your garden this year These are the attractive names of a group of summer and fall flowering bulbs that can add a great deal of interest and beauty to the garden The Abyssinian is known as the Its a rich scent ed flower that has all the characteristics of the gladio lus except that its much handsomer The silver white florets have been compared with butterflies hovering on graceful stems They are quite different in habit from the florets of the gladiolus and reveal a deep maroon blotch in the centre Under good growing conditions the plants grow anywhere from two to three feet high so theyll need locating towards the roar of the annual or mix ed border Planting time is the same as for gladiolus Set the corms three inches deep and five inches apart They take a long time to develop and dont start flowering until after the middle of August RARE FROM Check through your bulb catalogue and youll see that the Peruvian Daffodil also listed as This most rare and lovely plants comes to our gardens from the hills of the Andes near Lima Peru The brilliant flowers arc rath er like fantastic daffodils They ore slightly fragrant and last well when cut Most of the varieties arc white but theres an attractive hybrid called Sulphur Queen which is yellow Plant Die bulbs out in the open early In June when warm weather Is es tablished Theres no hurry to get them In the ground be cause they often flower a week or ten days after planting Give sunny location and set the bulbs four Inches deep Another excellent way of handling the Peruvian Daffo dil is to pot up some of the bulbs and set them around your patio or outdoor living area The straplike glossy green foliage is very decora tive out In the garden or Is fine for use in flower ar rangements long after flowering period Is finished FLOWERS The Capo or Summer Hya cinth was found growing at the southern tip of South Africa Its a plant that deserves to be much more widely grown in south ern Canada Its the most graceful and dignified of all the summer flowering bulbs Each bulb develops a tall spike of to pure white belllike flow ers Flowering time is about the middle of July or a little later A very effective way of using the Summer Hyacinth is to plant a group of them towards the back of the mixed or annual border Then in front of them plant two clumps of scarlet Dont plant the bulbs out doors until the soil is thor oughly warm around the end of May Plant in well drained soil six Inches deep and eight inches apart Eventual height of the plants is three to four feet Ive come to the conclusion that we dont do enough wat ering from the middle of June until some time In September Certainly when ft comes to watering a garden nature Is not always right nor can she be depended upon to supply the correct amount of water just when Its needed Most people today are looking for gardens with less work so its the watering that often gets neglected Supplying the right amount of moisture when its needed Is the key stone to the successful pro duction of healthy flowers and vegetables When looking at a fine specimen of rose or a healthy green cucumber Its hard to realize that most vegetables and flowers arc primarily bags of water Cucumbers for instance arc per cent water and most other vegetables arc least per cent water Two of the most important rules about wutcring arc plants have alternate per iods of moisture and dryness and dont just water soak get the water down deep to the roots As the surface of soil dries out and the moisture level drops the roots arc en couraged grow deeper in their quest for water This be ing the case after an extend ed period of rainfall give the soil a chance to dry before you resume artificial water ing Roots simply wont de velop well when the soil waterlogged One way to check on mois ture content beneath the sur face is to insert a clean gar- den trowel into the ground up to the shaft a an angle of about degrees If earth clings to the blade when its removed the sell is still moist enough But It the trowel comes out clean youve wait ed too long Its a very big mistake to give your plants a little drink every night as this wilt do more harm than good By wetting just a few inches of the surface the plants gen erally become shallow rooted and lose vigour as result Although less frequent will do the Job be sure to water thoroughly and deep How deep Is deep You cant go wrong by the ground as deep as the plant is tall For many plants the roots go down that deep or deeper In the cose of tall trees and one of ihc new root watercrs Is the eas iest ways of getting the water down that deep In the soil Never give hot water to a plant With this In mind be fore sprinkling with a hose let any water that may have been heated by the sun run out Most favourable time for watering Is late afternoon or evening because theres less evaporation anil lasting benefit to plants This is lot of water but watering Is vitally Im portant especially when rain fall Is not supplying it Need To Feed Livestock Sufficient Protein TORONTO To feed live stock enough protein farmers have a choice either they buy tailored feeds or more commonly supplement their crops with concentrates Animal scientists of the On tario Agricultural College University of Guelph point out thai protein requirements vary with age stage of gesta tion and sex of the animal Generally however on an airdry basis beef and sheep squire about iri protein in their diets while pigs vary from a protein need for dry sows to 18 or more for creepfed and starter pigs Dairy cattle have the ability to manufacture good quality proteins from poor rations yet they still need a to protein feed The following Ontario crops supply these approximate percentages of crude protein Alfalfa hay Barley 125 Corn yellow Oats Wheat Such crops therefore when fed to animals need added protein concentrates Soy bean oil meal with crude protein dried skim milk con taining
