subsidies for manufac turing milk or cream will be paid to dairy farmers on the basis of individual quotas the Canadian Dairy Commis sion announced today Each producers quota will be related to the amount of milk or cream on which he received federal subsidies in the dairy year be ginning April 1 and end ing March 31 As soon as records are complete each registered producer will be informed of the volume on which he was paid subsidies during the year and of his subsidy quota for To ensure inclusion for a quota producers should be registered with the Agricul tural Stabilization Board and have their eligibility for sub sidies established by March Any one who has received subsidy cheques for milk or cream Is now registered The Commission said that while it is not yet able to an nounce full details on the quota plan for the forthcom ing year it felt it would be helpful to dairymen in plan ning their operations to know that the quota arrangement will apply The purpose of die quotas is to relate the volume of milk and cream eligible for subsi dies to approximately the amount of manufacturing milk and cream required by the Canadian market Cecil Mortson Bull Named Superior Sire lbs fat per cent Unless your lawn is given a feeding right after the snow has melted it can actually be starving for nitrogen until the first of May Even lawns that have been well fed in previous vears will be also starving The nitrogen thats carried over in the soil from one season to another is in a form which can only be made available to the grass plants the action of the billions of bacteria in the earth Its usually around the first of May when the soil temperature reaches 60 degrees that these bacteria start to work We also know that grass starts to grow when the soil temperature reaches degrees It doesnt take very much of a mild in late March or the first week in April for that temperature to be reached and the grass to be in need of nitrogen Just as soon as the snow has melted away and before the ground has thawed out is best time to make the first feeding Use si complete fertilizer which contains immediately available nitrogen Its better to apply it while the earth is still frozen as less damage will be done to the sod than would be the ease if you waited until the soil becomes soft and oozy Before applying the fertilizer take a fan- shaped bamboo or aluminum rake and lightly go over the surface of the lawn to free it of any sticks stones bones or any other debris which might damage the later on Whatever you do dont take a steel rake and go heavily over the lawn When you do this youll be disturbing and raking up the valuable mulch of grass leaves and clippings left over from last years lawn if this mulch is left undisturbed it would eventually be returned to the soil as a valuable source of humus Once the lawn has been light raked and the complete fertilizer applied its a good plan to fence it off from all traffic until the soil has dried out and becomes workable Heavy traffic over the surface of the lawn while the ground is thawing out docs more damage each year than any other single factor Just as soon as the frost is out of the ground and the surface of the lawn is soft and oozy is the time that many men decide to level out the bumps and hollows To do this they take the heaviest roller available to them and go back and forth over the sod Ive even seen people hire one of the heavy mechanical rollers used to put down macadam driveways All they succeed in doing is seriously compact ing the soil which in turn prevents the vital oxygen from freely moving among the soil particles The only reason a lawn is rolled in the spring is to push hack into place a few of the grass plants that may have been partially heaved out of he earth by the alternate thaw ing and freezing which takes place in late winter or the very early spring For this job you use a completely empty roller Bumps and hollows can be levelled out in two ways You can add an inch of sterilized soil mixture at a time until the bump is smoothed out or the sod can be lifted the hollow filled up and the sod put back in place The will or desire to top dress a lawn with soil each year is a strong one with home gardeners Unless sterilized soil is used thats free of weed seeds all you succeed in doing is adding a tremendous crop of weeds and crab grass to the lawn Scattering the earth over the surface of the lawn provides the ideal germinating conditions for these weed seeds Top dressing is a good idea but if earth is to be used it must he sterilized I find that one of the organic composts makes the best top dressing With one of these youll be adding one of the finest forms of humus and valuable bacteria at the same time leaders The
