Representative for York County In the last couple of weeks I have written ferti lizer recommendations for about 125 farms in York The number of fields per farm goes up as high as or so it is natural that Im thinking more about fertilizer these days than anything else The most significant paint is that I am suggest ing higher and higher rates of nitrogen Im sure anyone that has had soil reports this winter will agree We have strong evidence now that rates of nitrogen that we would have thought foolish a few years ago will boost yields enough to more than pay the cost Corn is a prime example to lbs of actual nitrogen is now almost standard We are sure that barley wilt respond well too and I often suggest 1688 on soil with high fertility levels This is drastically different than the old standard of 2- or even Nitrogen is a good friend of wheat too Top dressing just as soon as the snow goes almost sure to pay One place where we are not using much nitrogen yet is on hay Its not needed of course if there is lots of alfalfa in the stand But we found many fields in our survey last year where alfalfa was down to a third or even less These fields are good prospects for nitrogen put on in April or when the snow goes Tests show that 80 lbs of actual nitrogen or 250 lbs of Ammonium Nitrate can increase yields of timothy or brome three to four times This means that a pound of nitrogen can produce about extra pounds of dry hay Nitrogen for hay or pasture is worth considering CLUBS START Clubs will start this year in the Easter holidays Boys and girls who were at least years by years was the comment of associ ation secretary at the con clusion of the meeting held recently in the Skyline Motor Hotel Toronto The enthusiasm was due principally to the approach which the the remark during an address to an Ontario Feder- alion of Agriculture confer ence on Assessment Taxation and Land Use Departing from his pre pared text he said his job is to prevent this kind of thing happening But I will be de pending on the rural munic ipalities for cooperation In his speech Mr Spooner said the question is not whether to have more urban development but rather what kind of urban development where and under what conditions lie said he favors changing the assessment period from one year to the life of lie municipal council In the cases where this has been Increased o two conference held In the Motor Ho le In Toronto They repre sented agricultural producers from the length and breadth of the province In his fccynnlc address Hoy Coulter second vicepresident of Federation the purpose of the conference was to Identify problems In as sessment taxation and land use study solutions to them and suggest programs and policies Tills is not a policymaking meeting ho told dele gates but an attempt to solve problems we arc fac ing He pointed out that It was when the Federation first formed a rural assessment committee to push for fairer assessment and taxation Summing up at the end of oneday conference Jack Ferguson saw a pronounced change In attitudes and topics Among themes he noted in the meeting were A capital gains tax should be considered Planning should be on a provincewide basis Some compensation Is re quired so those who stay in agriculture are not second- class citizens More emphasis is needed In planning on the individuals ideas and less on profession alism Freezing the value of ex propriated land until payment is unjust A person forced to forego his way of life and move to another area must not be made to suffer The present tax system does not distribute the burden of taxation equitably The gains the has made have been obscured by increasing problems Mr Ferguson said the re current theme of a capital gains tax is the most striking change in the thinking of farm people He said it would have been inconceivable at a similar meeting only a few years ago He said there have been so many amendments to the tax legislation that it looks like grandmothers quill Per haps the answer is a new act a whole new approach he said In concluding Mr Ferguson said the important thing is that agriculture Is not asking any special favors All we want Is not to be relegated to second class citizens The meeting accepted for study by the Federation reso lutions from York and Peter borough Counties on solutions to taxation and assessment
