March at St Andrews College J Theatre by the St Andrews College Players was a fast- paced production of de lightful musical produced on Broadway and based on Oliver Twist Musical Director J A Daw son and his assistant Harris director and designer C C Kamcke with a great deal of imagination and hard work brought a fine pro- j from very talented students to A thoroughly en joyable evenings entertain ment J with a choir hoy voice made a charming Oliver played by 1 was out standing performance of the evening with a professional sense of timing so rare in amateur presentations J Pallett as the Artful Dod ger T as Mr Bumble J Shields as Bill were extremely good and Alison Roberts as Nan cy was only girl the allstudent cast Alison cer tainly made every scene count Her Nancy showed her flair for musicals Other girls in cast were played by the hoys and done extremely well The mu sical score was enhanced by the College Band K was stage manager and his crew did a fine job of work on the many set changes Lighting was good and make up and costuming were ex ceptional The Art Display in foyer came from the Jack Pollock Galleries in Toronto and was mainly abstractions FOR SCHOOL PROJECT The audience was invited to take tea after the perform ance in Great Hall A col- ion was taken at the end Ihe musical the proceeds for the St Andrews College Centennial project fund The project is attempting lo raise for a teen age lounge for the addition to York County Hospital The students will also hold a ba zaar on May at college raise funds for this Cen tennial project Opening night at Centre for Edward A Delicate Balance was a thrilling experience Jessica Tandy and Hume are playing opposite each other in this struggle between man and his conscience Miss Tandy seemed hoarse and straining to be heard in first act Later she seem ed to relax into role Their tandem performance was meshed beautifully The other four players were Rosemary Murphy 9R Claire who ralher tended to extend her role into slapstick Ju lia the daughter played by Kathleen in her big scene with the gun lost with the audience When should have been in volved they tittered and gig gled so her scene became J humorous instead of lensc Duckworth and Phil ip as the error- stricken neighbors pave rather wooden performances As these are professional act ors one wonders if the im mense theatre Was not suit able for presentation of this type of play play is a repetitious repeat of several earlier plays plus constant rattling in this one at the liquor cabinet The pleasure was all in per formances of two lead players Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn MUSIC Festival Canada announces that the Canada Centenary Festival of Music to be held in New Brunswick in July has a lop prize of to be awarded by the
