THE ERA WED- MARCH ft No i r Ideal Recreation Site The weekend Winter Carnival sponsored by the Holland River Boatowners Association and the carnival promoted by the local Police Association on Fairy Lake recently were both a success and should give impetus to the suggestion that winter recreation can be both enjoyable and economical Service clubs enthusiastic fathers and a communityminded owner a small could transform Fairy Lake and many other similar sites in the district into providing countless winter hours of family fun and enjoyment at a minimum of strain on the The advent of the snowmobile gives added attraction to winter recreation on the local rivers and small lakes but we would suggest from the spectators point of view there must be tighter control and super vision for the sake of safety As with any motor equipped vehicle there are always one or two individuals whose competitive instinct and chances to show off their exceeds their reasoning to stay within safety limits The judges and committee members did an excellent job along these lines at the Holland River Carnival but they were hampered by both competitors and spectators who could not see or heed the danger of wandering aimlessly all over the river Only the dexterity of a snow mobile driver saved one small child from serious injury during the turn around in the races Fairy Lake offers cheap winter recreation the Holland Valley Conservation Authority Newmarket Town Council service clubs and the individual citizen should combine to make it a reality Better Without Its commenable to forgive and to forget but its difficult to do this when old memories are revived This would be the case if a German veterans group were permitted to participate in ceremonies marking the 25th anniversary of the Dieppe raid next August The Royal Canadian Legion has reacted strongly against German participation of any kind in the ceremonies An unusually large number of persons have contacted The Era and echoed the Legions sentiments and condemned an Era column This Week written by Ray The Era agrees with the Legion and disagrees with Mr Argyle But The Era points out that Mr Argyle is entitled to his opinion just the same as the persons who disagree with him For this is free country and thank God men living in freedom can disagree and still live In harmony This wasnt the case when Canadian soldiers fought at Dieppe all of Europe was living in slavery and thats why Canadians were fighting to people their freedom At Dieppe more than half the Canadian force of was either killed or taken prisoner Those who fought there and lived want to honor their gallant comrades next August They can do this much better without their former enemies present A Good Ruling A coroners jury has at long last come up with an explanation and recommendation that is different At most other times a coroners jury findings have been obvious from the start and their recommenda tions equally vague The jury inquiring into the death of two men at the CNR bridge abutment at Vandorf has recommended that no one is permitted to sell a motor vehicle unless it has been certified as fit to drive The only exception to this ruling would be if the vehicle was designated for wrecking purposes The legislation at the present time is ridiculous to the extreme A salesman merely has to certify that the car is unfit to drive and evidently from there on the onus of responsibility is on the new owner This certification does not even require a mechanics examination In this particular case it was produced in evidence that the 13yearold car had nine items listed as unsatisfactory was accompanied by the usual unfit for the road certificate but was still allowed to bo driven off the lot The police had also ordered the vehicle off the road when the steering was found to be unsafe It was later returned to the owner after garage repairs A car in good condition driven by a poor driver can be a menace to anyone on the road Any car with a selling price of as in this case is ready for the scrap heap and should never be allowed on the lot Fortunately few dealers sell these death traps We commend the jury for driving in the thin end of the wedge and trust reputable dealers will not allow the few with little scruples to lower their image Always On Duty Be it Spring Summer Autumn or Winter a fence remains on protective duty days a year A fence has a multitude of guardian chores to perform each season and during the winter months its main objective is to keep the heartier animals in and the observers out About the only intruder which a fence cannot handle is Old Man Winter Who drops his blanket of white any where he wants SUGAR By Bill Smiley I Rest Content Just the other night we had a talk at our Honor Banquet which left me rather perplexed It was an interesting at times exciting address by one of our Captains of Industry No less than the President of one of our biggest producers of processed foods A big cheese one might say in the vernacular American owned needless to say Perhaps I should explain what the Honor Banquet is Its an occasion when the students who have obtained per cent or more the previous year are honored along with their parents Again needless to say it is dull Theres nothing much to say except that these kids are in the top 25 per cent which even they can figure out And the banquet runs more to potato salad a bottle of milk at each place and cold cuts than it does to Lobster Thermidor and Baked Alaska But its a gesture anyway The athletes get a banquet with cups trophies letters and heartiness The kids in drama and music get applause when they perform Least we can do is honor the bright and industrious Trouble is they dont get a chance to show at the banquet how bright and industrious they are Instead they get a Guest Speaker This would be enough to keep me from making the Honor Roll And apparently my daughter feels the same as she didnt make it this year Second problem is the Guest Speaker feels he must inspire the kids Its a tough audience A hundredodd kids their proud parents and about teachers and I know whereof I speak I was Guest Sneaker a couple of years ago What kind of a talk do you give Well this chap with the best intentions in the world the wits out of the kids If Id been on the Honor Roll in Grade Id have walked ritrhL out of there and started swilling booze or gobbling sugar cubes loaded with LSD This fellow was an holiest hard hitting per cent and I admired him for It dont like pussyfooters Hut his talk mm obviously aimed at a sales conven tion with some concessions to be kids First he painted a horror pic ture of the world they would take over population explosion starva tion its all yours kids A few commercials here about the food company Then he outlined a frightening a pair of alternatives produce or youre out And he explained with a certain amount of pride how ruthless an executive like himself has to be when someone is not up to scratch Im probably being unfair He is noted as a tough but fair man He talked about hitting with a sledgehammer rather than a feather He talked about choosing goals and pursing them fiercely He said that if you got up Mon day morning and hated the thought of going to you should switch into something else He talked about money giving statistics for annual earnings depending on education from ele mentary to college degree Teach ers perked up a bit here when he said for a university degree and they average about The point is that everything he said was eminently sensible If you happened to be a salesman buck ing for sales manager or vice- president But his talk troubled me Change the terms slightly and what do you have It was against every thing I believe and try to teach And dont be surprised if you hear Ive boon fired dont believe for example in efficiency and having a clean desk except in a general way That is doing your job I would find it extremely dif ficult to say Hrixlcr your sales arc slipping Youre fired Theres nothing in this world hat I hate doing more than go ing to work Monday morning The only goal I have ever pur sued fiercely Is my wife when I fell for her And shes been pur suing me fiercely ever since Theres room for people like us friend Today I received I he accolade Another teach er who uses my room told me the girls of SOL and they are no said Mr Smiley looks nice Hut be Hiiro bus an un tidy desk I rest content Dear Editor from time to time you have printed letters from Lucy Clarke who seems to have a tremendous dislike for snowmobile drivers Most of her complaints were about the thoughtlessness and selfish ness of these drivers Well I hope she was at the Soldiers Bay Winter Carnival over the weekend because I have never seen a more unselfish bunch of men anywhere There were hundreds of children on the ice who had bought tickets for snowmobile rides there were not enough snowmobiles to keep up with the demand for rides But the drivers who were there showed how unselfish they were by literally spending hours on their snowmobiles driving child ren up and down the river I know of one man who was on the ice three straight hours without I couldnt count the num- he gave pleasure number of times he went We river Clarkes friends much in the minority Larry Campbell Dear Editor Being deeply involved with and dedicated to the work of The Canadian Cancer Society I feel I must lake umbrage at Bill Smiley column on the Page of your March 1st issue His opinion of canvassers com mitteemen and guest speakers must be based on his ignorance of the acute physical and mental suffering of thousands of persons who need help The help can only be provided by large sums of money collected by volunteer canvassers fur he organizations doing humanitarian work I feel the only way he can alleviate the irreparable harm he has done in this area is to forward each canvassing organization a substantial personal donation Sincerely Faith Campbell President Newmarket Unit Canadian Cancer Society Now that the country has had awhile to absorb the report of the Royal Commission on Taxa tion the big question is how many of its recommendations will the government adopt and how long will it take to adopt them The massive sixvolume report of Toronto chartered accountant Kenneth Carter and his five commissioners took four and one- half years to prepare Mr Carter was appointed by the Conservative government of Mr The report has now been present ed to the Liberal government of Mr Pearson And those parts which will be implemented will probably not become law until yet third prime minister has taken office This is because the subject so complicated and is so funda mental that months if not years of study will be required for the nations lawmakers to make up their minds on the merits of the Carter Commissions recommenda tions Whatever the result of the commissions report however it should destroy any doubts which might be left in the minds of Canadians that this country is headed for a complete welfare state The whole approach of the Carter Commission was based simply on ability to pay Those with the most ability to pay will pay the most Gone will be the old stock defenses about incen tive merit and encouragement of risk capital And just as those with the most ability to pay will pay those in the most need of the welfare states generosity will benefit the most from future government spending The Carter Commissions sweep ing recommendations which can only be touched on here seem also to be aimed at strengthen ing Canadian nationalism by call ing for a tougher tax bite on foreign ownership The recommendation for a capi tal gains tax would seem to spring not only from a desire for social justice but with a view to dis couraging the sale of Canadian assets to foreign concerns The lack of a tax on capital gains those financial gains realized through the sale of com pany shares and similar invest ments has been an encourage ment to many people to sell their businesses for big gains knowing they would have no taxes to pay In too many eases Canadian firms went to US buyers with the con sequences that per cent of all our productive capacity is now Americanowned The Commission has adopted the simple policy that income is in come whether it comes from work ing for wages speculating on the slock market or gambling at the county fair This will end the in equality of imposing the tax burden primarily on wage earners as is the case in Canada today instead of spreading it equally on speculative income and corporation profits Raising of corporation taxes from to per cent for all companies and elimination of the kind of concessions that have allow ed insurance companies to escape with a 2 million lax hill when they should be paying million will not get through Parliament without a great deal of debate The Carter Commission says its recommendations would not mat erially increase tax rates and that in fact taxes could be lowered in few years if the system was revised as it suggests One of the Commissions most significant areas of con cerns the federal- nd provincial governments in the field of tax collections The Commission comes out strongly for a powerful central government and cautions against any further submission by Ottawa to provincial demands It will be interesting to see what line is taken in this regard by a similar study which is now being made in Ontario at the behest of the provincial government One could have wished hat m other reforms not mentioned by the Carter Commission had also been proposed at this time One measure which would help meet the countrys housing crisis would be to allow homebuyers to deduct mortgage interest charges front- fl their taxable income Another field in need of study is the taxation of church property Crier I A a M I By Elizabeth Soon our children for the second time will bring home descriptions instead of marks in their report cards This is a good beginning in the desperate attempt to let steam off the overinflated balloon of education before it will burst Con sensus of all studies councils and conventions shows that in the end we will achieve with great finan cial labour pains a system discard ed years ago At that time children went to school to learn whatever they were able to absorb then left to learn a trade or join the labour force or to pursue higher aspirations if they would master the hard ships and the brainwork This worked fine until somebody had the bright idea that each and everyone should sit through 12 years school have a diploma or be stamped a dropout Employ ers jumped on the bandwagon by asking Grade education for any job that so much as involves the sight of phone or electricity The problem has developed to i the point where students repeat their grades until they sit as grownups in a minors class un happy causing nuisance a bored to death instead of being out in active life where they belong degree or none So we build voca tional and educational training centres to turn out half the calibre of those who once learned trades in practice and their theory in evening trade class There are dozens of highly quali fied respectable and utmost neces sary trades paid at a premium already that can be learned in practice on the spot There is no thing wrong with a good carpen ter who cant read Shakespeares English nor with a good salesman who never heard of square roots of these may he well to know hut lets face it both of the former arc increasingly more hard to get Not to speak of unskilled labour which we will always need nnd which quite soon no one will want to touch for fear of losing social dignity unless of course diplomas are established and schools for unskilled labour Now we realize we have gallop perl into a swamp of education sellout with all treatments of learning disabilities and perception blockages we cant push every through As one teacher put it The population today is not any brighter than that of thirty years ago Now we are ask ing our teachers to he psycholo gists evaluate and guide and tutor the children individually abandon marks and soon the grades and let the children progress as they can as In the old oneroom school- house This is well but let us also find places in trade and industry again for manually and practically gift ed children to learn while earn ing money instead of building schools for those not fit for schools schools for dropouts who do not want nor need them THE
