the Newmarket Council was rattled last week when an arbitration board handed down a decision that settle a contract be tween the towns police force and council The arbitration board in a strongly word ed written decision registered its dis approval of tactics of council which led to the police force taking its contract arbitration The board noted Hint the administration group of council which deals with police matters for the town was comprised of live of he nine members of council On Dec 10G6 the board said the ad ministration group and the police forces bargaining committee settled all outstand ing differences with regard to the contract DAY Then later on the same day when he administration group brought its recommen dation before the nine members of council for approval the recommendation was de feated by a 53 vole This meant the board noted that two of the members of the administration group changed their minds within a few hours of the time the contract was settled and when it was brought before the entire council Members of administrative group were the then mayor Kent Tom Tay lor John Clary ami Drew When it was brought before council only Taylor Broadbcnt and voted to back the groups recommendation to settle the contract dispute RACKED The hoard backed the administration groups recommendation almost entirely It gave salary increases the five levels on the police force and additional holiday benefits It decided not make any dcci See SLAMS Page Meanwhile Back At The NEWMARKET A letter sent to Coun cillor Bruce Eves from the Newmarket Police Association took exception to a tele phone request by the councillor that the Association supply a copy of the arbitra tion award to the Police Committee or there could be no meeting between the groups Councillor Bruce Eves In rebuttal told council Ihal there had evidently been some misinterpretation of the alleged statements made on the telephone I still contend that we could not arrange a meeting until Plaza Seeks Extra Shopping Night A bone of contention which has been lying dormant for a long time came once again to the attention of council following a letter read from J Schmidt and Associates representing the Newmarket Plaza requesting that stores in the Plaza be allowed to be open late on any Wednesday preceding a Thursday or Friday holiday The resolution brought in following the letter was tabled until the next meeting of council in two weeks When asked his opinion of the request Councillor Tom told council that of one or two stores in the Plaza the present bylaw had little or no jurisdic tion these stores arc mostly branches of multiple stores and as such can stay open and how they like I have a feeling that once again Ihls Is the thin end of the wedge These people claim they want the blessing of council so that they might arrange their Roster adver tising while In fact they do not need any authority from this council type of thing has gone full circle In many sections of the United Slates said Mr Over there wo find little difference in shopping whether it be at night or all day Sunday and at the present time Newmarket has a good name In other towns there has been a laxity of control Speaking further on the matter Mr said that there would only be a pos sible maximum of three days on which the holiday would allow the Wednesday night opening and this would mean an overall of about hours over the year DeputyReeve Clare Salisbury objected to the resolution contending that it concerned only a section of the merchants We should also poll downtown merchants for an opinion Councillor offered lo contact these merchants for an opinion we had studied a copy of the arbitration report The letter to Mr lives stated the Police Association were very disturbed at the nature of the phone call and that there was no authority for a demand for a copy The letter had been signed by Harry Dia mond on behalf of the Police Association but council were told that some members of the Association did not agree with letter being sent Mayor Drew told council I was quite disturbed when I received a copy of the letter feel wc have gone overboard to reach an agreement with the Association during part of lost year and the early weeks of this year litis letter was unwarranted and should have hail a meeting with the Police Committee and Police Associ ation Councillor lives said that the letter con tained only part of the telephone conver sation and although he agreed with the time and length of talk he felt that only selected portions of Ihc conversation had been In the letter which he felt hardly fair The matter was referred to ho Police Committee and a meeting will be arranged between the committee and representatives of ho Police Association Annual Reports
