2 HOI era VOU mi I north into Manitoba at North Township wants a dentist and a doctor the community must be prepared to support these services Dr Stewart head of the University of Toronto Child Dental Care Depart ment told township residents last week Dr did not mean that tovnship residents must support them by being patients he meant that taxpayers money must be provided to construct office and living quarters for a doctor and dentist These mist and spray of water from facilities would be paid for by the two men in easy stages dropped to well below waterway starting in There is no doubt that both a doctor and dentist would soon be earning a very comfortable living as there is no dentist and only one doctor classified as a permanent resident in the township Dr suggestion that the community the taxpayer provide living and office accommodation is a sensible one And if this is the best method to encourage a doctor and a dentist to North Gwillimbury then township council should waste no time in doing so North Township cannot be classed as a disaster area as far as the shortage of dental and medical care is concerned There are a number of doctors and dentists in nearby Sutton and an excellent staffed hospital at Newmarket But the fact that there is no dentist close to the main population of North Gwillimbury the Keswick area means that it is quite inconvenient and costly for residents to have proper dental care That is regular checkups to prevent tooth decay especially with children Without adequate medical help nearby it is possible that lives could be lost in an emergency such as a fire an accident or even a child becoming seriously ill in the middle of the night and the parents having the transportation to take it to hospital In this day and age no community should be without a doctor or dentist It is up North Gwillimbury Township Council to remedy the present situation ra town Oddity of Nature Three different ice formations were caused by the mist and Education This was supposed to be part two of a series on education in this country Last week I com plained about obsolescence the lack of everything but pupils the unfairness of the fundraising for education the lack of any national standards and the rigidity of prac tically everything in the system Not bad for a start i 7j In all the years I wrote this column before I began peddling pedagog the open class in the Toronto Music Festival We again gratefully acknowledge this cour- fctedy We hope you will allow further space at this time that we may tell all our interested followers that the orchestra has entered the East I Canadian Championships The J competitions will be held during first weekend in April in the Edward Hotel Toronto Also our Centennial Year con- it Board However an obstacle has arisen which unlike my health I can do nothing about The meeting night for the School Board has been changed to a Wednesday evening and this is one evening I cannot attend I regret I cannot continue to work for the Aurora Schools but would like to thank all those who showed their confidence in me in- the recent elections Yours very truly A Turnbull Aurora J- 4 cert promises to be better than It will be held on Saturday May in the auditorium of and I never heard another word The first hint that I should tone it down came from a representative of the mighty teachers federation Said theyd had several letters from members urging that I be drummed out of- the service be cause I was destroying the teach ers image by mentioning here such human horrors as sex and drink and by using the odd epithet He asked me heavily what I would do in his position I replied lightly that Id do what I always do with letters from cranks and bigots chuck em in the waste- basket He was annoyed Pinned down he admitted there were two such letters And I was annoyed Second subtle suggestion was from an inspector A lady She passed the word that the Deputy Minister no less was concerned about my column and its contents I turned indigo and You mean the Department is try- to tell me what I can say and cant say in my column Nononononol she blurted visions of headlines dancing in her head Its merely hoped that youll use your own good judg ment Next time it was another in spector At the time a nowdefunct newspaper for teachers was run ning my column The paper was happy the fan mail was heavy But whispered this inspector he thought he should tell me for my own sake that I was getting in wrong with the federation tokkin about I I en quired in my best Head of English Department manner And got no answer that I could pin down I seem to be down on inspectors this week And so I am We got the word the English inspectors were coming I alerted my 15odd birds in the English department Next morning the English staff would have gladdened your eye Gals all in their best dresses hair freshdone Men with their shoes And every single one glow ing with virtue after working till one am preparing the sort of un realistic but model lessons that inspectors expect Nine am Word comes that they wouldnt be there Snowing and blowing Any of us would have struck off for anywhere But these citynurtured drivers are terrified by a bit of wind and snow So we shot off all those ter rific lessons on the kids Mine laughed heartily when they saw my desk cleaned off It was the first time theyd seen me below the breastbone in months And tomorrow we have to do it all over again because the in spectors are still coming if they can make it May they go into a big snowbank and sit there for four hours If they do struggle through it will be an anticlimax The girls dresses are crushed and their hair coming down And sure as hell am not going to shine my shoes two days in a row Just another of the evils of our system A teacher is given a record of merit by an inspector who sees him maybe once a year for one or two lessons The selfconfident showman who may be a lazy bum normally whips a flashy lesson for inspection and scores high The selfconscious teacher who normally does a terrific job be comes nervous and makes a botch of things and scores low I dont really hate inspectors Theyve changed They are no longer the old terrors but a pretty decent helpful lot But the tern is punk More next week maybe The Banking Issue The Governments firmness in lucrative Investment opportunity dealing with the takeover of the The US needs Mercantile Bank by the Rockefeller interests suggests a new chapter may be opening in US Canadian relations For the first time the Canadian Government has been able to resist US intrusion Into a key branch of the Canadian economy The Mercantile story goes back when New Yorks First National City Bank decided to buy up the Dutchowned Mercantile Bank It was Canadas smallest chartered bank but would provide the springboard from which to jump into Canadian banking in a big way As First National chairman James Rockefeller told the story to a committee of Parliament ft was only after his group had bought Mercantile that Ottawa threatened to restrict the banks operations However a memorandum written by Robert president of First National mentioned the Canadians had been assured that the bankers would come back when the deal Is firm to clear with the minister of finance This seems to destroy the Rocke feller contention that the Ameri cans didnt get fair warning from Finance Minister Walter Gordon When the Bank Act came up for revision Mr Gordon designed legislation which would specifically curb Mercnntiles growth Thi was done by restricting banks to assets 20 times their men share capital As Mercantiles share capital is only million it would be limited to holdings of 200 mil lion if this revision becomes law assets are already in fact greater than million An ironic sidelight to the argu ment is that both First National and the Dutch interests which then owned Mercantile agreed their deal would be subject to the approval of the governments concerned Approval of both the US and Dutch governments was sought and obtained but no one bothered to seek the approval of the Cana dian government Now First National is stuck with a small bank in Canada which has no prospect of expanding This is not of course the first time trouble has flared between the US and Canada in the past few years Prime Minister Pearson recently earned bitter vitriol from dent Johnson for suggesting the US stop bombing North Vietnam External Affairs minister Martins clear call for admission of Red China to the United Nations did not enhance our popularity with Washington And there was the nuclear arms dispute between the Liberal and Conservative parties in which Washington clearly backed the liberals contributing to the de feat of John in Rut in the current episode the US for the first time has threat ened to retaliate against Canada Washington was abuzz with plans to amend US banking legislation which would have curbed the opera tions of Canadian banks in the US Since then Ottawa has offer- American banks the same type of agency deal here which Cana dian banks have in the US Under this system the banks cannot accept local deposits or engage in checkcashing It must be remembered that while Canada needs American in vestment the US also needs the goodwill and cooperation of Canv Twenty million Canadians are the equal in both population and wondering whether winter or spring from one day to the next Some residents reported that tulips noses out of the ground well they got quickly covered op again with snow Youngsters earned some pocket nioney by offering shovel walks and driveways and to their credit be stated that most of them did so as long as everything was really blanketed not looking for easy job course there was lit joy of seeing the big clearing our streets and inevitably putting up huge barricades in front of entrances just freed Unfortu nately there appears no workable solution to this problem On a white morning it is nice to walk the streets just as the working day begins So many will be out to dig at cars and steps and everybody stops just long enough to shoot a greeting or answer to a friendly and appro priate remark Shopkeepers busi nessman are doing their part in front of stores exchanging Words and smiles with passersby There is no belter time to realize how many people in this town do know each other how many faces are familiar and how we are all stuck together In the same boat or It is the smalltown life and even with all its shortcom ings for constant lack of funds and a hundred other things still so much better than a place ten times its size in population and conveniences filled with strangers In this community there hardly is a street where your child or mine could wander and not be re- cognized by some soul who knows him or his kin hardly a block- or two of houses that- you could pass and not encounter at least one per son you have met before That warming thought on a cold winter morning when you just sank in ankle deep snow where people had not cleaned their side walk Come around again at noon the inspiration has worn off a little by then but shovels will have been at work unless some one here did not seek a place to live but only housing This word is cruel and effective in express ing a world of difference we it more often every day its creeping up to our doorstep with Metros boundaries However this is not the time for nightmares its afternoon and thawed and you just got a shower sprayed over you from a passing car taking a puddle in its stride This is a friendly town if you will greet it friendly With your indulgence in its struggles and with your compassion it still can give you not roots perhaps hot home The streets are washed clean ed dried by thaw and sun and winds whom else and tomor row it will show again You enjoy a walk on a white morning THE HASKELL Editor and GIL SHEPHERD News Editor i Published every Charlei St Newmarket Ontario by
