newly formed of Newmarket received its charter Tuesday night during ceremonies and presentations viewed by ISO Civitans their wives and special guests The inclusion of Newmarket was the club in International to receive a charter since July 1961 Aurora was the last club to be formed in this area re ceiving its charter last June Both of these clubs were sponsored by the Richmond Hill and the latter were responsible for the program presented Tuesday night Newmarket President Gordon was presented with the club charter by Ray Armstrong of Richmond Hill Governor Canadian District West Inter national The lectern and bell gifts from the sponsoring club were presented to Mr by Arthur and Neil Shaw Gerry King past governor Canadian District West made the presentation of the club banner woman school bus driver has been credited with preventing a major tragedy about 5 pm Monday when the brakes on her bus failed on a steep hill and sent the loaded bus out of control Mrs Joy of Oak Ridges warned her 39 young passengers to take emergency precautions and then manoeuvred the speeding bus away from a group of pedes trians standing at a comer Three children were injured and a num ber shaken up when the Langdon bus hurtled through a fence and slammed into a tree The accident occurred at the inter section of St and the St Johns Sideroad four miles southwest of New market In York County Hospital is Nancy Pren tice in satisfactory condition with a fractured jaw Two other children Carol Watson and her brother Barry nine were treated for minor injuries and re leased John who operates more than school buses in the area said Airs Babinok remained in the bus to calm the frightened children while police and an ambulance arrived Her two children Peter and Gerry pas sengers in the bus were not injured Mrs Babinok was taken to York County Hospital suffering from shock and was later sent home bus was transporting from Grade 6 and under from Snowball and Eversley public thaws that has made ice fishing hazardous This weather has cut down the number of Ice fishermen and turned what was hoped have been a profitable year for the fish hut operators into a year of financial mediocrity The main body of the lake didnt freeze until Jan 19 On Jan it broke open again and fishermen who had put their huts out near the fourth fifth and sixth con cessions of North Township had to stand on shore and watch them slowly sink into the soft slush To add to their woes it got cold again and high winds began blowing huts across frozen stretches of Lake Simcoe Two fish hut operators retrieved a number of their huts by chasing them western roundup style across the Ice on snowmobiles Mild weather came again but the high winds continued As a result huge slabs of ice were piled along shore Near Salvation Army Summer Camp residents report an ice pile 25 feet high Fish hut operators spent the weekend straightening out their huts instead of ac commodating fishermen The operators warn the thickness of the ice varies from one fool open water and said that It wont be safe to go out on Lake unless there are at least three days of zero weather At the council meeting
