Now Is The Time shore Lake Simcoe municipalities have been warned and now its time for their elected officials to lake some action The warning came from Kitcheners Planning Director who said that within years the Lake Simcoe shoreline would become one of Ontarios worst cottage slum areas He based his prediction what he lias seen develop along the shores of Lake Eric and Lake Huron Elected officials admit that cottage slum areas are developing in Sutton North Gwillimbury and Gcorgina Townships These officials say that they cannot fight the approach of cottage Blums without the help of he Provincial Government They are both right and wrong They are right in that their municipalities have not the huge sums of money needed to develop large provincialtype parks along the shore line This type of development rightly should bo the responsibility of the Provincial Government because they will serve all Ontario residents But before the Provincial Government will act the smaller muni cipality must show some concern about the problem Studies must be made figures presented and finally the Provincial Government must be approach ed In other words the initiative must be taken by the local government These provincialtype parks would be for the general public resi- dents of Newmarket Aurora East Gwitlimburj and yes residents who are flocking to Lake Simcoe in everincreasing numbers Rut what of the residents of Sutton and North who are not fortunate enough to own lakefront property The answer could tic for the local municipality to purchase small pieces of lakefront property from private landowners as they come up for sale These properties could be developed into small parkctles and reserved for local residents The is one way to slop slum development lots of open space Another way is to shame slum dwellers into beautifying their homes and properties and this can be done by the local municipality and the province beautifying the properties they own Still another way is for the local municipality to have strict build ing antilitter and safety bylaws and to strictly enforce these bylaws would be the shame of the century if beautiful Lake turned into a massive slum area I
