THE ERA WED MARCH 5- KO 10 Aid Crippled Children The longer brighter days we have enjoyed recently herald the approach of Spring providing most with little better outlook for the months to come The Ontario Society for Crippled Children to provide a better outlook for the many youngsters who are handicapped and the Easter Seal Campaign is now underway The Newmarket Lions Club long active in this project will again spearhead the campaign for this part of York County and a portion of the funds they raise will go towards helping handicapped children of the area as well as supporting Blue Mountain Camp for Crippled Child- ren near Collingwood The balance goes to the Ontario Societys head quarters for use wherever the money may be needed The Lions have an appeal ready for mailing It is hoped the recipients will do their share to make the local campaign successful Newmarkets Viet Nam Well its getting close to that time of the year once again time for young lambs to gambol young mens thoughts to turn to the disadvan tages of still retaining bachelorhood and perish the thought income tax and the neighbors offspring To those hardy souls who still have visions of crocuses and coming up behind a verdant carpet of green front lawn we are forced to issue a warning The gremlins are appearing on the streets ready to change that vision into a nightmare in a few moments The young fry have realized once again its time for the Spring Frolic and that means lawn and garden destruction and few punches pulled on the front lawn while it soft they will try to emulate the Hollywood movie stars and leave footprints for posterity If you have a Fall planted sanctum close to the street wailing to spring to life shortly this could be a prize target these young people would love to prove that the average gardener is far from hep on how bulbs should grow Their contention appears to lean to the fact that side walk cement is a far better growing medium than earth and anyway it will save the householder hours of worry as to whether they did take Little can be done to deter thi3 younger type of modern sport They are taking a good name from the majority of public school children who have been taught by parent and teacher to have some respect for private property Even if the bulbs survive this first onslaught they are fair game for these depraved little flower Punishment if caught could be a pretty garden patch planted with land mine or perhaps it would be more humane to tie the culprit to a post to wait until the tulips and crocuses are In full bloom Deserving Support Canadians are being asked to participate in two fights that must be won One is sponsored by the National Crusade for Canadas Mentally Retarded and the other by Health League Both groups are combating crippling affliction one of the mind and one of the body Both deserve support The National Crusade seeks to raise a tola of million from Cana dians to support 13 projects across the country This sad affliction costs Canadians million a year and doesnt lake into account the hundreds of millions of dollars lost because those affected by mental retardation are not able to make a full contribution to the country through no fault of their own There will be no doortodoor campaign for funds but donations can be made through local representatives of II Canadian Association for Retarded Children Equally important is the Health League of Canadas plea for funds Through research and publicawareness such diseases as diptheria and polio have almost ceased to exist in Canada A halfcentury ago they were among are most dreaded diseases The Health League Is not asking directly for funds hut is asking Canadians to be aware of the number of diseases among us and when funds for research are necessary to contribute Happiness may be a warm puppy but heres a young lady who covers that in sometimes come in too heavy a package lee pick up tie Irish Seller pup and him a big lovi hug but after some straining decided a pat would do SUGAR AND SPICE by Bill Smiley Bats And Butterflies Life can be a real drag but it has its moments A couple of them came to me this week to convince me that Its more fun to be and suffering than stone cold dead in the cemetery The other night I look three busloads of students to see a play Murder in the Cathedral in neighboring town I wont even mention what a nightmare such an excursion is for the man jn charge of a hundredodd lively teenagers We arrived in best clothes and best manners ready for an eve ning of culture The house lights dimmed he stark set was reveal ed the chorus came on with lis brooding of doom and death You could have heard a feather drop as a lliouviiut sit enthralled Suddenly a ripple of Round wont through the theatre The rapidly became a wave The chorus in the best show tradition bravely pressed on its chant almost lost In the swelling titter The ghost of the old opera house had taken He had assumed the form of a large bat The noise and lights had frightened him out of his eyrie among the rafters And he put on a display of aerobatics that stole the show girls clutching their hair He peel ed off and divebombed the chorus making it duck collectively and frantically floorwards He disappeared intermittently but a born scenestealer was right on cue for his entries Thomas Archbishop of Canter bury intoned For a little time the hungry hawk will only soar and hover circling lower And there was Mr Bat whistl ing around the cars The chorus wailed I have heard flut ing in the nighttime have seen scaly wings slanting over And guess who was fluting around gaily on his scaly wings right past their i All in all In the heat a diverting evening re I wont speak for he players I it the kids and lie hat loved if My second reviving ixpiuiiiirc was not with a hat but a butter fly I think that term best de scribes my 1yearold She flits She cant quite decide whether shes going to he a writer a folk He id It 1 audience mid actors He and her had both told hoi alio a chance you worked hard enough was pretty jittery Teeth i Yeah The wife wants to beat the tax four trips to the bathroom hi minutes My heart bled for her In her first class there were competitors Guess who was last It was for students ami under They were all good though Ive been to a hundred festivals and am pretty worldly my spirits wink for her sake The hell clanged She went on hinge And as I sat turning purple while holding my breath through llach prelude and fugue she piny- like tiger Second place we lake Wo tailored out of audi torium in a daze leapt Into a cab rushed to meet her Mom and hurl ed her words back In her face Tho kid repeated twice during the afternoon and we arrived heme after a 12hour day and a trip staggering with exhaus tion but flushed with triumph Of and butterflies I guess THIS WEEK AND NEXT By Hay Senate Asleep The Senate that assembly of old men as the Romans called it contained some younger faces at Ottawa this week But the repu tation of Canadas upper chamber was if anything the worse because of it Prime Minister Pearsons ap pointment of 10 new members stressed anew the dismal trap which waits for those who yearn to reform the The action in naming nine wellknown Liberal workers among his 10 appointees shocked the coun try because Mr Pearson hail in the past made so many promises about Senate reform The Liberal Partys plat form contained a firm pledge to reorganize the upper house That was the election which first put Mr Pearson into the office When he went back to the country last November that plank was stran gely missing from the Liberal campaign platform The Liberal Government did succeed in one minor hit of Senate reform the compulsory retire ment at the age of of those appointed since last May Senators who were appointed be fore last May when the retire ment bill was passed also eligible to step down at on a pension of per year The first to do so was Albertas J Canadas 102 Senators are now appointed to the age of nt per year of which Is tax free As everyone knows the Senate was designed the pattern of House of Lords the theory being that in Canada as they would save the country fro radical legislation This was historic reasoning behind the ceptance by the Fathers of Con federation of the idea of chamber parliament While the Senate establish in the tradition of the House Lords It has in fact worked very differently than its counterpart In Canada the Senate quickly and totally tool of ail patronage an old man for unsuccessful politicians wit little to contribute to the fry With appointments under fill control of the government no in dependent or third parly spoke men have ever gained entrance But in Britain drastic change in the membership of the of Lords have come about I cent years Because the Labo party had its turn at and in recommending the creation of peerages radical new blood in I tie well as Bui there for a which take a sober second look at House of Commons legislations Rills do not become law until they clear the Senate but in re cent years in both Canada and the voice of the House bus been so strong that the up per chamber has not dared prevent passage Senators need not ob ligate themselves to the voters More recently the creation peerages in which on the recipients and not their de would be eligible to in the House of Lords opened the old institution to many mo Legislation permit members of the House Lords to resign if they seek election to he House of Com mous finally democratized the tern The result has been that in tain the House of Lords the quality of its membership has become a leader of publi opinion has spearheaded legislation such as the of capital punishment and tlr legalization of homosexual twecn consenting adults The inference must be that it is not the system so much that is fault as the kind of people who rim the system As long the Canadian Senate remains haven for unsuccessful and the ability to lose elections was chief claim to dlstinctio of nine of the latest appoint ments Hid Senate will continue to be a pimple on the body politic Letters To The Editor Dear Editor Its too bad that our local poll- not
