Club Music has passed into the his tory of equally successful former festi vals and other events sponsored by the local club and this record emphasizes the value to a community such a group can be This year with a and belter festival involving some partici pants alonj with about others con cerned with administration marshalling and Judging the name of Newmarket has meant something extra to many other communities and the resultant publicity cannot fail but place this town a little higher up the ladder of good public item that would appear outstand ing Is that even though a large number of children of varying were com petitors the final marks awarded by the adjudicators showed very little spread This to us would indicate the quality of I Hi into consideration the and that the adjudicators had a high regard for the musical ability they were called upon to assess The attendance at he final program The Festival of Stars gave ample proof that music festivals such as the one just completed are of interest to many in the area leaving little doubt as to the need for the continuance of the event It is not our purpose to single out any individual for special commendation but simply to pay tribute to those who gave linstintiifgly of their time to ensure that the young musical talent of the area was given the opportunity to perform before the public pain the advantage of con structive criticism from the adjudicators ami in some directions receive scholar ships or other recognition which will lead to a continued Interest in music COMMEND MAYORS STAND A rather unusual and perhaps com plicated situation came to light at the Monday night meeting of town council when Mayor A Kent informed council members of letter he had sent to Dr J Stalker chairman of the Ontario Hospital Services Commission regarding the use of additional chronic care beds in approved nursing homos in Newmarket The mayor is to be commended for his stand in this situation We feel with he mayor that in spite of additions to York County Hospital and the new York Central Hospital at Richmond Hill it ap pears unfair that the older patients many of whom have paid up hospitaliza tion cannot obtain accommodation at nursing homes in Newmarket without paying the full cost themselves The reason given for the approval of beds in nursing homes in Aurora and Mount Albert for this type of cure with eligibility under the hospital commission plan is given in a letter to Mayor Kent by Dr Stalker He slates that this ac commodation lias been approved on a temporary basis to serve in lieu of chronic hospital beds until the hospital can provide a chronic wing He further slates that when nursing home beds were being approved consideration could only be given to operators who showed inter est in providing this hospital type ser vice ami at that time no applications had been received from Newmarket Subsequently nursing homes have started in Newmarket but the approvals had already been given The Ontario Hospital Services Com mission was started primarily to allevi ate distress among those who could not afford the prohibitive and rising costs of hospital care in this province It has done an excellent job in many respects but we might suggest that Dr Stalker whose salary is in the vicinity of a year and his associates on the commission might find time to lend an car to the plight of some of our older citizens and those chronically ill who have assisted in some of these commission salaries by their contributions to the fund since its There are no doubt problems mid complications over which the commission under the totma of the act has little or no control but these older people deserve the best of our efforts in care and consid eration If in the opinion of the com mission the hospitals have not the facili ties or time to provide this then lets make a survey of nursing homes and in stitutions who are able to do this effi ciently cut the red tape and give these people something for their premium con tributions We feel he mayor was justified in his disagreement the Commission in this matter and we trust he will continue his influence to follow up the situation We feel sure that he will receive support from most sectors of the community in seeing at least that these people get what they have paid for Retarded Childrens Mould not warrant ex- Mr
