Shamrocks Bloom No Blast Effects IS TOO MUCH EXPECTED Metropolitan Torontos School Board seems to be having oodles of trouble these days Queen City dailies carried accounts of the recent expenditures hassle in de tail and the only purpose they accom plished was to disgust Toronto taxpayers and the Ontario public in general with the situation Locally we can be thankful that we have school boards and teachers who do not rank in the same category with those in the Ontario metropolis We have good schools decently equipped without being luxurious and we have teachers that are reasonable both in salary demands and working conditions without getting into the posh class This district can be glad there is so much understanding on both sides of the educational scene It avoids what is described as unpleasant- some of the items on the list in the requisitions presented to the Toronto board it seems that their teachers are being pampered beyond all sensible degrees Certainly it looks like the schools are truly homes away from home to the members of the teaching With high class equipment in lounges and executive offices broadloomed to the tune of thousands of dollars it would ap pear that in the vernacular of the street the teachers have it made Toronto board members met the re quisitions with anger and embarrass ment They were angry that such luxury items were foisted on them for approval and more or less taken for granted that they would pass them without grumbling They were embarrassed that all this ex penditure had come into the open and that they were members of the board Naturally it is a difficult position for Ihe board members If they fail to grant alt the expenditure they incur the dis approval of the teachers and if they pass them they can expect to be heartily mal igned by the taxpayers Perhaps the most significant state ment that came out of the board session was when one member heatedly remarked Toronto could not furnish their own homes in the manner in which teacher expect us to furnish their school quart ers He will find wholehearted agree ment thousands of Peculiarly the jackpot that the find9 in from similar bodies honored in the past few years Extra courses in the summer automatically qualifies a teacher for a salary raise al most every year And this is taken for granted by both school boards and public alike What other profession or trade can a young person enter and expect such increases every year up to an undoubted better than average living There just isnt any other occupation that enters this It is just about time that teachers and school boards both took a long look at the taxpayer Just how many ratepayers are Thee the pale of Metro seems to indicate that he Toronto board is getting everything that is coming to They feel that the is paying for past sins The sins mainly are the flagrant manner which Toronto officials have outbid smaller centres for the services of good teachers Not so much in the salary department but in plush extras better lounges parking better meals etc Now these facets are being carried to extremes in demands but the Toronto board must try and live up to past cannot be blamed for teach ing where they get the most benefits It is only human nature for people to work where they get everything on the well- known silver platter Each year they demand additional privileges and have come to the stage where expect them without question Just how close they can get to a working Utopia is on ly a matter for future conjecture Most Ontario residents feel that cation has just about reached its zenith at least expenditurewise Figures from the provincial parliament this year in dicate a educational budget A considerable rise from two decades ago when the educational expenses were Certainly we have a larger pop ulation better schools and more teachers But is this boost of over per cent- justified in a purely educational sense or has a large amount of the raise been eaten up in special items Few professions or trades can make the demands teachers have made and had the educators Few householders will rank in this category Education is a definite must in our modern society and teachers are an inte gral cog in this cultural wheel But surely there is a limit on expenditures for salar ies and facilities Dont forget the town and country school turned out some fine men and women in the past Look at prominent figures in every stratum of Canadian life and you will find numerous country school backgrounds And the rigors of those days did not mar their characters nor ambitions We can have education without spar tan conditions We can have good stu dents and teachers without serving cream puffs at every meal Give a few of these cream puffs back to the taxpayers in sen sible and understanding legislation on the parts of both teachers and school boards RED CROSS MONTH March is Red Cross Month in Canada and this year marks the annivers ary of the founding of the Red Cross at Geneva Switzerland It all started back in when Henri a Swiss banker witnessed a furious battle between the FrancSardin ian forces and the Austrians at Italy Dismayed at the lack of medical facilities for the treatment of the casual- tics organized small band of peasants to comfort the wounded until they could be given medical aid or death took them from their misery Thus started the Red Cross and al though originally concerned with relief to the wounded of armies in time of war became involved with large scale disaster relief operations as a secondary task Today we know the Red Cross as the organization which moves in at the time of disaster whether it be to offer help to a burned out family a community stricken by epidemic or flood Working the community level or on more mam moth undertakings on a province wide or national basis the Red Cross is always ready to provide food clothing emergen cy shelter and the many other services for which it has become so well known March is
