of Bureau of circulation and A Newspaper Serving Newmarket anal the rural diatricta of North York Heart Throbs Humor by Andrew Murdison A Gambles Passing Glances every Thursday Charles St Newmarket by 10c Member of Clan AwocialtoD and the Audit of Circulations Authorized THE EDITORIAL PACE THIRTEENTH DAY OF JULY NINETEEN HUNDRED WIDEN DAVIS DR At the insistence of a group of East Gwillimbury Heights ratepayers the Tor onto and York Roads Commission has painted crosswalks on Datis Dr New market opposite the plaza We are grateful for the commissions gesture and its quick response to the request but we are wondering if the painted lines are enough They can only be termed guide not a crosswalk We doubt if they give the children crossing Davis Dr much in the way of security Already the lines are being obliterated by the The time has come for an overall consideration of Davis Dr and its future development At present the road is lamentably inadequate for the traffic it has to bear The number of vehicles that use- it is quickly increasing Is it not feasible now to hope that a new Davis Dr can be built We can envisage a fourlane highway between the Don Mills and the Fifth Concession of King Township The Fifth is already paved and would allow quick connection for commuters with Highway at the Au rora This isnt a fanciful dream This is a project that needs seri ous thought right now In 20 years time the area will be so densely built up that any widening of Davis Dr will be almost out of the question Only four years ago Davis Dr was a sleepy little road Now it Is flanked by a motel countless gas stations a subdivision a gigantic shopping plaza that every weekend will spew forth thousands of tars a light warehouse type of business and a bowling alley Soon a new subdivision and a brand new high school with a capacity for students will also be built adjacent to the road Who knows what other enterprises will be using the thoroughfare in the imme diate future As the population of Sut ton and North Township ex pands so also will the flow of traffic in crease down Davis to Newmarket and south beyond Aurora Any major reconstruction of the road in the name of safety convenience and common sense should be started now Any excuses or objections that may be raised now against the project will not appear valid to the Newmarket citizens years hence In the files of the New market and Express there are public demands that Main St Newmarket widened The date Main St was never Today the scheme would be impracticable Let us not allow a Davis Dr widening to fall a victim of the same type of pro crastination Davis Dr is quickly be coming an important artery It should not be allowed to be strangled by own growth Certainly the road cannot be widened as easily as it might have been four years ago but any road work done today by the same token is not going to be as costly or cause as much inconvenience as it surely will If mors YOURE FIRED The dismissal of James Coyne as governor of the Hank of Canada has re sulted in a fiasco which has put the gov ernment and the Senate of Canada on the spot Tiie dismissal is final but Coyne Is having the last word or words some hundreds of thousands of them by latest count The matter of his pen sion a year for life has been dropped hi the reason for his ousting and by Coyne himself when he found It didnt sit well with the public Coyne is in politics right up lo his neck and jl appears now that the dont want him Liberals have found themselves with a burning brand in their hands and they cant quench the flan US writers have dealt Issue on lis merits Week says In moat countries a clearly defined relation ship whether written into the const it Hon or a mailer of tradition exists be tween the central bank and But this Is not the case in the US where the Federal has In en meekly subservient and sometimes Independent Nor Is ft the esse In Canada where bitter open war fare has been raging between James Coyne governor of the flank of Canada and Donald Fleming Canadas Fin ance Minister While Coyne has every right to hold independent views in using his position as head of the central bank to make pub lic attacks on the government he brought the bank itself into the political The government struck back not merely by seeking Coynes removal but by sug gesting that a Royal Commission deter mine just what the relationship between the central bank and government should be The lesson for both the US and Canada seems to be that too much in dependence for a central bank can be much subservience THE STATE OF THE ROADS With a gesture of despair Sid replied to yet another com plaint on behalf of a Newmarket rate payer concerning the state of the roads The reeve is chairman of New markets Roads and Bridges Committee The reeve with year perience behind him Is not unused to these sporadic charges of road neglect His job as the man responsible for road maintenance is not an easy one and is traditionally the target for irate letters His despair stems from the knowledge that he has a certain amount of money available and a certain number of men to do the work the reeve or Indeed anyone res ponsible for controlling the direction of town works to succumb to defeatism and a plodding acceptance of the situation or is there an alternative It is not question to answer Almost everyone agrees that Newmarket roads are less than wonderful Perhaps the present system of maintenance is justified by the money available but to a layman the haphazard patching of pavement here and a load of gravel there effectual way to look after the town Hut Newmarket hopes to gradually silence the protests of car owners with broken springs with what is unofficially dubbed the first fiveyear plan for capi tal road improvements Within years the municipality hopes to have the towns road system in good condition and it plans to pay cash for the work as it pro ceeds Since no small town can afford the interest charges on loans for a crash program of road improvement this Is the best way to get the quickest results with the least amount of financial grief We admire the policy and the intent of the program but will the schedule be strictly adhered to Growing pains for a quickly expanding Newmarket are in evitable but have we the administration here and the personnel that can imple ment the ambitious plan Already tho town engineer overloaded with work team toils with patching the worst of tha The department lo lie effective will have to he expanded even though the biggest of the jobs will be
