officially retired from his duties with the Canada Department of Agriculture on October 14 For many years closely associ ated with certified seed potato growers and dealers florists nurserymen and other agricul tural groups throughout the province Mr always lent a guiding hand in helping grow ers solve some of their produc tion problems In 1945 he played a leading role in starting the Potato Pro duction Improvement Committee an organization composed of growers and federal and prov incial officials interested in the improvement of the potato in dustry in Alberta Born and educated in Keswick Ontario and a member of the graduating class of at the Ontario Agricultural College John Wesley first entered the Federal Depart ment of Agriculture in 1926 His first job was as a seasonal plant disease investigator assisting in a wheat rust survey in Southern Alberta In Mr Marritt became a permanent member of the certi fied seed potato inspection staff in Western Canada with head quarters at the Experimental Farm at Indian Head With one assistant his inspection district at that time covered Western Saskatchewan and the whole of Alberta from north to the Peace River Soon after his headquarters were moved to Edmonton in he became interested in the possibilities of shipping potato eyes to farmers in outlying areas where good seed was hard to get At that time no one knew much about the potato eye trade so Mr Marritt laid out an exten sive experiment to find the ans wers for growers and dealers alike He published a scientific paper about his findings and to day more than a
