The Common Isabel Inglis Colville OF VARIOUS THINGS Id like to say first that I hope those interested in a real musical background for a growing New market will give full support when the canvassers for the Newmarket Branch of the Can adian Concert Association ap proach them These concerts give our citi zens a rare opportunity to en courage Canadian talent without going out of town to do so In the past these concerts have of such a calibre that they have the laid the foundation for a lasting membership But now that Green Acres has opened the doors of her fine auditorium to us there is room for yet more members It will be a fine com mentary on Newmarkets music lovers every seat is filled Adjudicators Then according to a pleasant tradition In our families Mr and Mrs Elgin called to take us to the CNE and while the world was waiting for the sun rise we started off in great glee had not been well but was feeling better and as the day was perfect all seemed wonder ful We left home in that soft grey Indescribable light that precedes the sunrise when even familiar things arc endowed with a strange glamor But even pleasant drives have an end and we parked under the trees near the band shell and after breakfast went to see the flowers As usual they were very beautiful especially the dahlias and gladioli The ar rangements always intrigue me The grandmothers cottage with Red Hood and the wolf was delightful Never have I seen such Afri can violets But to look at African violets flaunting their bloom always makes me mad It recalls too vividly my plants which if they- do well for a while suddenly retire from business and look at me with blank faces Leaving the flowers Archie and I did what we have often intended to do but never did we went to hear the for girls under The auditorium was of good size with rod drapes and a good stage and a fine grand piano The first tow children we heard were evidently the pupils of one teacher The young man who acted as their accompanist was an adequate but not an in spiring one and the children looking charming in their dainty frocks sang sweetly but at the end of hearing six or seven we knew as much aboutthc song as before they began No expres sion in face or voice and poor articulation I Pills A as ma in free Round Then followed a pupil of Harris Aurora Even if we had not seen him accompany her we would have known his style The child sang with expression both In face and voice and attitude We found out what the song was about Then there were others some accompanied by a teacher and others by a professional accom panist With only one exception the children who had this woman to accompany them had a distinct advantage She even seemed to anticipate their moods But what we waited for with the greatest curiousity was the ad- findings He was an excellent critic A sense of humor took the sting out of some pretty pungent criti cisms He showed them how of them sounded He said here you have only one verse but it was supposed to tell a story It was a cute little story but only in a few cases did we get it They had not learned that if you smile a smile will get into your voice and that if you bend toward your audience they will be en rapport with you at once and enjoy what you have to tell We had to leave as the adjudi cator came to an end but I think Mr Harris pupil came first I returned alone after lunch when children under 13 were on Now they had four verses to tell their story but the adjudicator said that many of them failed as completely with four as with one I think a little lame girl who was charming to look at and listen to got first but by this time I was so ill I could only get back to the car and lie down till we could get together and I brought home to go to bed with a very unpleasant form of flu MRS H CUPPAGE HEADS Mrs Harry was In stalled as president of the New market OptiMrs club when the first dinner meeting of the sea son was held at Country Acres on that stretched for six wonderfully relaxing weeks the effort necessary to get back to work is almost too much In fact we didnt make it last week so this is the first column of the fall season What this country needs Is not a cheap cigar or a good fivecent cup of coffee but more summer It could last another two months with no complaints from this quarter The reports that holidays are stimulating that they renew your enthusiasm and energies so that you return with zest to your job are not accurate That might be correct if they only lasted days or two weeks A longer period just establishes the habit of laziness Gone is all liking for the rush of urban living Why reenter the ulcerproducing race against time that was the schedule last spring Breakfast at is so much more sensible than this am rising Weve delayed the return to organized community activities as long as possible There is no further escape Meetings loom On the horizon and they must be attended But one planned for week promises
