Take for instance the case of Grant Morton used to hurl here with great success Now he is with in the North York jun ior baseball league Morton showing the sharp form that used to make him a top chor here served up a neat three hitter as Agincourt dumped New market DoNuts The game a North York junior baseball league contest was play ed at June 26 Coach Eisby nominated his ace speedball Jack Cain to oppose Morton Cain had to leave after pitching to two batters with a blister on his pitch ing hand Don Thorns took over and before Thorns could silence the Agincourt bats the ultimate winner had chased home three runs It wasnt all Thorns fault as his mates booted three in a row to make things tough for their went for another three run bundle in the second using backtoback home runs by John Ross and Frank Knightly as the lever Protecting a lead Morton had things all his own way from there on The DoNuts went for their one and only run in the second frame Jack Cain relieved of the pitch ing worries doubled to open the chupter and solid Keith Bryant stepped up to punch out a double to score Cain Don Thorns thirdinning single was the third credited to the DoNuts Thorns fired a third strike past seven opposition swingers while Morton whiffed six the juvenile girls high jump crown with a leap of and scored seconds in the 80 metres hurdles and broad jump Marian galloped home in front in the 60 metres hurdles with a mark of 105 These five young sters have of course dominated the district track scene in their events and this is the second year that the Richmond Hill club has functioned An orchid to these upandcom ing young track stars and to their coaches and sponsors Some of these kids will be our white hopes at the next Olympic games Just too bad that the same facili ties arent provided in more cen tres and that includes Aurora and Newmarket where there is equally good potential talent July Jottings Best wishes to that fine young athlete Bud Sut ton who was married last Fri day to his school girl sweetheart the former Rosalie Hatfield Au rora Play checkers If you do youll find the welcome mat out at the farm of Mr and Mrs Fred Vacher on the 9th concession ol Whitchurch just north of Stouff- ville Saturday July Mr a former Toronto municipal aspirant is a great checker fan and hes staging a tournament for all North York ers No entry fee prizes and a sociable hour over the sand wiches afterwards A new master of ceremonies did a fine chore on Saturday as club secretary Cliff Chapman filled the bill unexpectedly at the Belairs banquet at Graystoncs due to the unavoidable absence of sponsor Mac McPherson and manager Ron Simmons through family emergencies Cliff did a fine chore with considerable hon or and with Mayor Jim Murray and yours truly cutting short with the speeches the banquet went ahead with speed and brevity Handsome windbreakers from the town cardigans and pictures from the club plaques and the dinner from the sponsor medals and crests from the OHA went to the happy warriors a coop erative club that played for the fun and ended the season with balanced books due to Mr Chap mans fine promotional chore The ladies were not forgotten either and each tobe receiv ed a cup and saucer Dancing as of Graystones followed n organization meeting will be cooked up for August and while one or two are talking retirement and others may try for a place elsewhere chances are that most of the gang will be back again Coach Ron has been sounded out for a coaching job by the Boston chain but hasnt made up his mind Meanwhile hes playing softball with Rich mond Hill in the YorkPeel league Moved up to B the club can use four players as cither imports or waivers and this would give them the added strength they would need for a higher category One thing is sure intermediate hockey has sold itself to the fans in Aurora and the Bears will have to look out if theyre to continue as favorite sons some quick organization and the Motormon may well be on their way to another championship Remember Col R S well known horseman and sol dier who used to live in these parts is Grand Chair man of the fast growing Cana dian Pony club which is doing so much to encourage riding and horsemanship among the younger set This brings us to a sad note as we record the sudden death of that fine sportsman Harry Ste phenson a trainer of jumping horses has lived in the district for over 30 years and he was a familiar figure at all the district show rings and the Win ter Fair When he was with the Jarvis family he trained the groat Solar Eclipse He always followed Aurora and hockey teams over the years with enthusiasm and hell be missed at all the games Sympathy is extended to his wi dow and family among who is numbered Hal Stephenson one of Auroras finest baseball and soft- ball players Bud Lehman popular Stouii- ville athlete probably rates as the districts most versatile ath lete right now Bud just finish ed the hockey season to plunge into baseball and soccer and hes equally good at all four sports While intermediate baseball is in the doldrums in these parts take a gander at the South Sim- league This year there are no less than intermediate teams playing as follows Everett Creemore Stroud Lisle Alliston Thornton Ivy New Lowell and This is probably the biggest independ ent league in Ontario Just to look out for the future a junior circuit is going as well with Stroud Thornton Utopia Holly and Ivy in action Both Aurora and Newmarket tried it briefly in this league but the of the circuit seems to for itself Brother Has- has a fine minor circuit go ing in these parts largely due to his promotional efforts Mike Kolton the big husky pitcher who toiled for Stouffville juniors a few years back is one of the young hopefuls that Teddy Morris has in for Toronto Argos this year Kolton played fine junior football and stands a good chance of catching a place with the double blue this year Hap Holmes football mentor at St Andrews College is once again in residence at Camp training Canadas young military cadets for the summer Vic pro at Aurora Highlands carded a first round in in the Ontario open at St Catharines which was not good enough to qualify for the final rounds but he headed a mighty impressive list of pros and amateurs at that of course doesnt get enough tournament work or he would be up with the leaders as he has all the natural attributes Bill one of the dis tricts best athletes is playing fine lacrosse for this year and by the same token Bobbie the big Newmar ket boy is fast developing into one of the better players in the OLA senior circuit Bob Davidson and Doug Alcorn expect to get together in the not too distant future to talk over hockey plans and it could be that some important news will be forthcoming about the Bears shortly Dont be surprised eith er if you see Bob who coached Woodbridge Dodgers last season linked with the Leaf chain in an important
