Pending the hiring of an assessor the temporary appointment will be made by Mr Brooks The Speaker of the House of Commons is the interpreter of the rules of parliamentary procedure He must be impartial favor no party encourage free discussion and at the same time preserve the dignity of debate In he past 15 years manufac turing has replaced agriculture as the largest single source of em ployment for Canadians Of all Canadians with jobs 25 per cent are now in manufacturing and 15 per cent in farming Its in late August and Septem ber that the Milkweed pods open and release their seeds each which is equipped with a tuft of silky down to enable it to float on the fall breezes and start a new plant in a new location In order to prevent that from hap next fall the time to do something about it is now says the field crops branch of the On department of agriculture While Milkweed has been list ed as being resistant to many road superintendents have obtained good results that is have prevented pods and seed forming by spraying with a low volatile ester of or with brush killer combination of 24D and 245T On the other hand very poor results have been ob tained using the same herbicides at the same rates of application The difference has always been that in the successful treatments the spraying was done early in June In the unsuccessful cases spraying was done sometime in July Another secret of success in keeping roadsides clean is an nual spraying over a period of several years The best known chemical con trol for Milkweed is the 24D brush killer mixture at the rate of oz of acid per acre sprayed in late spring This treat ment may need to be repeated for two or three years In rough pas tures this should eliminate most of the troublesome pasture weeds It should riot course be on pastures containing a high percentage of the better clovers Unfortunately Milkweed also invades crop land Spraying is not the answer because grass is the only crop capable of surviv ing the amount of herbicide nec essary control Milkweed In grain crops which may be infect ed With Milkweed the use of an early maturing variety one that can be harvested early in Aug ust is recommended In this way the Milkweed is cut before it can mature seed If this is followed with after harvest cultivation to kill off the roots the Milkweed problem is well on the way to being overcome of this order all female calves must be vaccinated after they reach the age of four months but before becoming months old with the cost of vaccination beeing borne by the province Owner Responsible Every cattle owner is respon sible for making arrangements for the vaccination of his calves and has the privilege of having them vaccinated by the veterin arian of his own choice Although the certificates of appointments issued to practitioners make re ference to the county or counties which they may perform vaccin ation services no veterinarian has been granted the exclusive right to vaccinate in any area Under the Brucellosis Act male cattle may be moved from one supervised area to another without a permit or a blood test Now that the whole province has attained that status restrictions have been lifted on the vincial movement of cattle Nev ertheless female cattle over months of ago originating in other provinces must be isolated and blood tested before being allow ed to mingle with native cattle Mr Goodfellow is confident that provincialwide enforcement will prove a great forward stop in the fight against Brucellosis which in past years has caused losses amounting to millions of dollars annually So far a is known Ontario is the first pro vince to adopt a program under which all female calves must be vaccinated Because of the effect iveness of vaccination in the pre vention of abortion it is reason able to assume that losses from this disease will he greatly in ensuing years Toronto Pair Sentenced To Penitentiary Terms Two Toronto men were given penitentiary
