would never go to bed on time or wash Mrs Clifton told her audience that the Roys and Girls House Toronto publishes a catalogue of recommended hooks A book list compiled by Mrs Clifton with suggestions fror preschool to teenage level was distributed All the books on this list retail for Jess than two dollars Mrs Clifton listed six stand ards by which parents and tea chers could judge books for chil dren They must be written in good If children always read books written in good style they will gradually accept that Mi Clifton said The characters must be warm and human The information must be correct This is particularly important in books on travel science biography and history The story must hold the childs interest Children today are fas cinated with Treasure Island and Peter Pan as were the children of past generations Books must be beautiful It is too bad to introduce children to the best stories in shoddy clothes If a child sees only beauty he grows up to appreciate beauty in everything Finally books must have posi tive values That doesnt mean that they must preach but they should do something to help the childs character grow The auth or should have some purpose in writing the story other than to make money It could be only sheer good fun said Mrs Clifton Every child should have books of his own she continued These are the ones he reads and re reads until they become a part of him and help mould bis charac ter Books teach a young child many things They teach him that there is a time and place to sit still They teach him to care for books Hooks should not be kept with toys but on a shelf by When one is torn it should be mended with the child seeing that parents take care of books Books of his own prepare him to read They make him eag er for school and reading Mis Clifton added Mrs A moved a vote of thanks to the speaker Mrs Clifton displayed a collect ion of book from her young dau ghters personal library The attendance shield was
