taking bows as champions The win brings to Aurora its third OHA championship and its sec ond Ontario championship this season In Aurora won the junior C championship and in Au rora Army took the allinterme diate championship No win however has been more inspir ing to see or to hear on the air for that matter than the last two games As youU recall last Thursday Aurora dropped a de cisive win to Minden before a large crowd of fans That gave the the chance to win the cup on their own ice and before over roaring fans it as it would be that way After Aurora had a lead entering the third stanza the Monarchs went ahead and with five minutes left it for the red and white Then came a goal and with seven seconds left and Paul out of the nets Andy Closs fired a desperation shot that fooled in the nets and in overtime Phil Nicholas gave Aurora a win Before the largest crowd in years at the Aurora arena the took a onegoal lead in the first from the stick of Walt Fines in creased it to two with Jim Pat- tons goal and with playing sensational hockey seemed sure winners with but a period to go In the last period the staged a finish of which few eyes have seen the equal Doug Powell exSpringfield pro powerhoused a slap shot past Maguire with about eight min utes left and when there was but seven seconds left and the last rush was on with the goalie out a tem porary lapse cost the the goal The crowd was restless and happy or gloomy depending on your point of view It looked as if the attack had faded A definite minute overtime period was ahead and then if Closs Sr and others Only Mr had seen his son on a winner before Jimmy having captained juniors in It was the end of the rainbow for most of the Aurora lads who somewhere along the line had either reached the OHA finals Paul Hughes Bob Wall Taylor and Charles Iteming shared the other Aurora goals In the grand championship final against Stratford Ken Tay lor notched the Aurora goal Legion folding up on soft- ball and in Aurora except for girls softball and town league the picture doesnt seem very bright The plight of soft- ball can be blamed on nothing else but the lack of a minor soft- ball program over the years We have always wondered why some of these recreation groups didnt sponsor and organize youth leagues in place of concentrating on baseball ex clusively We have no quarrel with baseball except that it is a more expensive sport to play and that after spending a pile of money on a minor development by the time the boys are up to juvenile there is no further com petition for them except for places like Stouffville and In any event while we like to see baseball flourish shouldnt be neglected entirely Only in the rural sections of the area has softball hung on both for enthusiasm players and con tinuity as witness the Lake Sim- league the YorkPee the Vaughan league etc It seems too bad that after fighting tor floodlights there arent grade A teams to play under them mm The Skip Has The Answer Page The Newmarket Era and Express Thursday May While curling has slipped into the background until next No vember Al Cameron sends along a clipping that should get a chuckle from all the district stone heavers It is entitled Why He Played First and goes thusly A story as pertains to that very popular winter sport asso ciated with the stone and broom came to our attention and which we feel probably bears repeat ing even though it docs involve one who wears the ministerial robe In order however not to pointedly set up the principal of this episode as belonging to the local elergical fraternity we shall accordingly generalize in respect to identity It seems that a certain mem ber of the cloth had invariably played lead for his rink never being allowed to substitute in any other position on his team As such a state of affairs had persisted season after season the clergyman felt that the time had come for a mantoman talk with the skip about the matter In making known his griev ance the minister stated that he felt that since he now had been a member of the rink for several years he was probably not being ton presumptuous in enquiring why he had not been allowed to play second on the team instead of always being asked to lead In fact he continued he con sidered his experience and abil ity as a player was such that he might occasionally have been permitted to even vice The skip then explained the situation by stating to the cleric that at this time it might be best to refer to the scriptures for the answer and he would hereby quote the biblical injunction which says He that is without sin let htm throw the first stone FEELYORK SOFTBALL MEETING TONIGHT First indications that the soft- ball willing workers circle out King City and Schomberg way are starting to Newmarket and Thorn- hill did not reenter while ham decided to play in the city league the fourth member of the league last season it was reported will play in the Ontario County league League
