finally obtained a building per mit on Tuesday April for a shopping centre located on the Lewis frontage on street having a frontage of feet by a depth of feet II It told the Era and Ex press last week The ultimate plans call for ap proximately 100000 square feet of store space or in other words stores plus apartments and offices This will he built gradually as times and conditions warrant it Basing our costs on todays prices the completed shopping centre will cost in the neighbor hood of one million dollars which will be a nice assessment said Mr I would like you to raise an enquiry about the balance of my Street frontage which consists of approximately feet frontage by a depth of feet As you know former Councillor Bclugin had this land zoned for industrial purposes for all time I had to agree to this condition in order to get a permit for the Gas Station he said During the past three years we could have sold this proper ty many times but were unable to do due to this restriction If this restriction were removed I feel quite sure we could put buildings on there to the value of possibly another one million dollars This would go a long way to reducing the taxes of he citi zens in general in Newmarket As it is now the taxes are pea nuts mid the town may not re ceive any assessment from this property for years unless some thing is done In my opinion this- street frontage is not the place for industries and I have been advocating for the past three years that the town should set aside approximately acres of land for industrial factories only he declared Only two weeks ago I met with some members of the town Continued on Page 5 Col Declares Building Permit Must Be Issued For Yonge St Stores When shopping centers were proposed on Davis Drive and St last year there was Legal Questions Says Kent Have we a solicitor asked Councillor Bert Kent at the April 15 meeting of council Should he be here at each meet ing We have a solicitor replied the mayor but we would not be justified in expecting him to at tend every meeting And he should not be expected to make snap decisions at a meeting Such actions might prejudice the town he added I am not trying get solicitor out for every meeting said Mr Kent But so often no decision is reached by council because we are not certain legality of a point It is referred to the solicitor The decision might be worked out in commit tee but often there no reprit to council When the legality of an issue is questioned I think council should be informed as to the solicitors advice on the mat ter he suggested The solicitor earns Km enjoyed the evening and were able to discuss the local program with the Barrie com mittee and pecked up a number on April la by Harold that he had not been notified of ficially that the town was ex propriating a small section of his land east of Yonge St for a well site In a letter to council Mr said he didnt know of the proposed expropriation until re cent That is probably stretching the point a little said Before the ex propriation bylaw was passed had occasion to speak to Mr about it to attempt to reach an amicable settlement If this land has been expro priated why hasnt been notified by letter with a copy of the bylaw asked Councillor Kent When council expropriated my land the least that should have been done was to have a sent to me replied Mr Mr Cockburn is right we did discuss this matter but did not know until a few minutes ago that the site of our shopping center was three feel over the expropriated land find that out after plans have been prepared at considerable expense Because of this three feet I did not get the building permit promised to me Who promised it asked Councillor Knapton I was told on Friday night when I appeared at planning meeting with the consulting en gineer that a permit would be issed to me today replied Mr Lenhardt Could a threefoot adjustment be made to save the subdivider extra expense asked the mayor of ideas to Use to develop the who expressed regret that coun fatted to would cost about cents each for alterations to be made the plans If council will au thorize me to do it will make the necessary changes free of charge Actually this threefoot busi ness is just splitting hairs said Mr Lenhardt 1 have had sev eral meetings with Mr Cockburn in an attempt to deliver this well to the town at a small amount of money We dont want to hold you up for a lot of money hut we dont want you to spoil our shopping center I still thought negotiations were under way learn tonight that the matter has gone down to the Ontario Municipal board If the expropriation plan is accepted it is the area we had planned for our parking lot It looks as if council can take anyones land in Newmarket and not have to tell them about it until its gone he charged Engineer Cockburn was given the authority to change the sub- dividers plans A copy of the expropriation bylaw and a cov ering letter will be forwarded to Mr Town Clerk Wesley Brooks who did not attend this meeting told the Kra and Express last week that ho had sent a letter on January to Mr Lenhardts solicitor Edward en closing a copy of the two bylaws for expropriation of Mr land and for the develop ment of a municipal well Mr Brooks said that his letter also advised Mr solicitor that the Ontario Municipal board had been named arbitrator The information was not sent to Mr
