The Newmarket Era and Express Thursday April Our Readers Write Letters to the editor are always welcome but the names of the writers must be known to the editor The Editor Having followed the discussions In the press and on the street in regard to the opening of a liquor store in Newmarket I would beg leave to express my opinion through the columns of your The first thing to consider is the reason why the liquor people are so a x i s to have a store here or any place els for that matter They tell us the more outlets there are the less drink ing is done It goes without saying that men of the calibre of those manufac turing the liquor are not going to spend thousand dollars to es tablish a store here and then maintain it unless they are going to increase their sales Where are they going to get the increase In customers From nowhere else but from our young people Anyone knows that as the old customers drop off they have either to get new ones or go out of business Whom are those cus tomers going to be your son and daughter I had the privilege of meeting a young man several times during the past winter who gave up a good business just to devote his time to salvage what he could of our youth who have fallen prey to the terrible destruction caused by some of our modern day living He Informed me that easily per cent of the cases that come under his jurisdiction stemmed from the use of alcohol Furthermore he said get this If you forget everything else I have said that without exception the trouble could be traced to the home Why open a store for par ents to u y intoxicants to take home and get their families start ed down skid row If you wish to refer lo the Daily Star of March you will find an article in which the writ er an exconvict slates per cent of the inmates in Kingston penitentiary got into trouble by drinking Also if you refer to Dr Van Dellens letter of March you will see that he says one in every who try moderate become problem drinkers One writer told us that there had been drinking going on for years We believe that to be true or no doubt for a much longer time than that However In all the years of our ancient his tory or Bible we do not find it re corded once where anyone did benefit by it On the other hand there are ac counts of many came to naught through the use of strong drink Even great Empires have fallen because the heads of the countries indulged too much We do not have to go back in history either as we know of countries to day who are struggling to keep their heads above water People who arc in a position to know will tell you that the consumption of liquor is their big problem What did Lloyd George a man I whose opinion was respected the world over tell during the last war with Germany He said England has a bigger enemy than Hitler right within her own borders Liquor As far as a liquor store draw ing business lo town is concerned we might as well forget about it even if it does for the siinnle rea son that a lot of money will go to booze that should for other things I met a man from a town where had liquor outlets and questioned him on them To use a phrase of the street he blew his top right away and said he was sick and tired of seeing spending money in them that they owed him and he couldnt get more If there is a store opened here As for being drawing card for business as some are Irv ing to tell us Main Street will re- to the original Indian trail it oncc was as the store be out al the new shonninu centre When the of a vote on the question of a discussed it was staled that it was not fair to ask residents to have their names appear on a pe tition requesting a store The very fact that people do not wish to be implicated in it goes to prove there is something shady about the whole affair Around holiday time we hear repeated appeals to people im ploring them not to drive if they drink or not to drink if driving If drinking incapacitates a mans ability to drive does it not also incapacitate his ability to run his home his business or our business Finally if we by keeping a li quor store out of town can save just one of our youth from falling by the wayside it will be well worthwhile On the other hand if having a store here is the means of sending one of them down skid row the money gained by it will surely be blood money if there ever vas such a thine E Ewart The Editor Newmarket April This letter is not meant to change anyones view in regard to his vote It is just to make a few points clear regarding the li quor vote in question since I brought this vote forward I feel it is my duty to write the facts When I presented this vote to council I did so without fear or favor to anyone I did it because the people of Newmarket are en titled to a vote on the liquor ques tion every three years and it is my contention that it should have been done before this as the last election was held Dec I state here that the past coun cils did not wish to express them selves for fear of not getting el ected the next year My view is to give the people what they are entitled to while one is in office whether matters he controversial or not This is one of the ques tions which a democratic govern ment gives us the privilege of de ciding The vote gives us the right to say whether we want a liquor store and brewers retail outlet in Newmarket and does not include a hotel to serve beer All you do is vote yes or The question whether we want it or not arises here Lets face the facts Here I must give the church and temper ance groups the credit which is due them in opposing this vote It is only right maybe that they should But the fact remains that when and only when a controver sial question comes up you have lots of opposition by groups but never when it comes to policy or nomination in Newmarket Also may I remind you that up to the first of May Newmarket is a dry town I wont elaborate other than to remind those oppos ing this vote that they have been neglecting their duties for a long time In regard to business this will he an asset to the community Why should the people of New market go to Bradford to buy li quor and while there do other shopping And believe me there are plenty who do The town of Fergus is a good example T h council voted to have stores because was taking the business away The same applies to Bradford and Newmarket The businessmen should not hesitate to excuse themselves and get out and sup port this vote because it is one way in which they can promote business for the town One merchant on Main St has said that you cant buy groceries and liquor both Lot me remind you in that case that Ihere are people in town going with out food because there is plenty of liquor consumed here The hypocritical point rears its head here also There are people In town who drink and have li quor in their homes who will op pose this vote because wont drink in public and who get other people to buy their liquor for They have it delivered wrapped in paper after dark so their- neighbors wont see them Some of these people also are taking part in bootlegging be cause if they hire someone to get it for them they pay the costs of the liquor plus the fare for going after it Though their names may not appear on the order in the liquor outlet stores they involve the people who get it for them But thats okay Nobody thinks they drink Let me add here that no one is so stupid as- those who wont learn I was duly elected dent of a society in town for last year and this year So was the secretary for this year He re fuses to act because I brought up the liquor question Some people who say I am an alcoholic and a revolutionist are among the hypocritical group which puts up a good front on Sundays and in public yet at times are a disgrace to themselves and the town The people who are opposing this vote claim they never tasted iiouor If that is the case lets not be a doginthemanger and deprive people of it who have tasted it and enjoy a drink If while you are in this world you cant do any good then dont do any harm Liquor never did any harm it is the fool who drank it that did I say lets have outlets here be cause if people want it or have to have it they will get it regard less May I also add that where Ihere are outlets consumption has decreased and business increased as much as 30 percent There never has been a vote on outlets in Newmarket before only for a hotel This vote has noth ing to do with a hotel nor can there be a hotel without a vote of the people and one cant be held for three years Myself and the rest of the people who are not opposing this vote for outlets would oppose a vote for a hotel The rumors in regard to a loca tion are all false How could any one know the location when the vote has not even been held Af ter the vote there must be a for mal request from the town to the parties involved asking them to locate here Then and then is the location decided and it is done by the parties involved meeting the committee and mer chants And the location is de cided to the advantage of all in terested parties Parking facilities have a big part in the location of the ware house but not the liquor store So the rumors regarding the shop ping centre are rumors To the people who are involved in such rumors all I can say is before the vote and the of the vote let vour consciences be your guide To h people who are campaigning against this vote lets preach months of the year every year and not total prohibi tion for three months of One last reminder to those who are interested in the town finan cially and honestly our neighbor to the south is very interested in this vole If we dont get it they will reap all the benefits finan cially and honestly our neighbor also be an asset if they get it Shopping in Newmarket will be a thing of the past because be tween them and Bradford all the commodities we need we can get when we go for our refreshments on Friday night or Saturday and Their Substitutes The Quilting Bee Soap Mak ing etc We quote from The Old Grindstone Somewhere on the premises conveniently situated stood the old grindstone It was a veri table instrument of torture to smaller male members of the family for when the axes scythes etc required grinding it generally devolved upon the small boy to do the turning If he saw one of the men ap pearing with a tool in one hand and a basin of water in the other he knew he was in for a half hours hard labor How eagerly he watched as the edge of the tool was being examined to see whether it was sharp enough for the word to be given that would release him from the tiresome duty How his arms did ache as he turned first with one hand and then with the other putting forth an extra effort when the tool was being pressed more firmly on the stone and what a sense of relief and freedom he felt when the job was finished and he could run away and play Irene Jaques Librarian Dear Sir On behalf of the Ontario Minor
