It Is time some thought was given to the matter of accredita tion for our hospital Miss Lil lian Thomas superintendent of nurses for York County hospital told the board of directors in her annual report- She congratulat ed the Hospital on its serv ices and listed statistics for Total admission last year were an increase of 639 over There were opera tions emergency room cases fracture room cases and xray examinations In 235 more babies were born at York County hospital than in the previous year bring ing the years total to 1335 There were sets of twins and 20 stillborn babies Miss Thomas said accredita tion was a topic of discussion at the annual Ontario Hospital con vention in October Delegates were urged to make every effort to have their hospitals accredited since any Canadian hospital which does not will not be ap proved by the Canadian Medical association for interne- training or by the- American College of Physicians and Surgeons for gra duate training The responsi bility rests with the individual hospital to do this Of the hospitals in Ontario more than 90 are not fully or provisionally accredited Miss Thomas said Praises Our Hospital Womens auxil iary has continued to be active and most helpful in numerous ways particularly in connection with the opening of the new wing last March said Miss Thomas Their latest project the open ing of a hospital gift shop is proving to be a most interesting and exciting daily visit to be looked forward to by patients visitors and hospital staff We trust the workers get as much pleasure from it as they appear to be giving Miss Thomas thanked the Hos pital for its work and ex pressed her appreciation for the pleasant associations it has pro vided She told the board there are over 600 Hospital in Canada with a membership ex ceeding During the past year these groups have raised over for Canadian hospitals Ontario is well represented having J auxiliaries Staff Shortages The shortage of trained per sonnel is a problem faced by all hospitals not just York County hospital Miss Thomas explained She quoted from a talk by Dr NO REPLACEMENT OF TOWN ASSESSOR AT PRESENT TIME The question as to whether the town has an assessor was raised by Councillor George at council meeting on Monday night Reeve Edward Wrighlman sup ported Mr Knaptons contention that council should appoint an as sessor for 1957 and until the ap pointment is made the town has no assessor It would not be right to make that appointment while a charge is hanging over the man replied the mayor Frank Doyle has been charged with making a false state ment on the assessment rolls of and but no evi dence has been brought before the courts to date The charges have been remanded until this week when further remand will be sought A man is innocent until prov en guilty replied Mr Knapton I agree with you answered Mayor But there is no caue for concern Mr Doyle is working He was paid for Janu ary and at the special meeting on Wednesday his February cheque was authorized He is working on a temporary basis until this mat ter is settled in the courts It wou ld not be fitting for us to make an appointment at this time The town has no assessor at this time charged the reeve He was appointed only for rise to support the mayors position replied Councillor Glad stone Ridler I quite agree that it would not be proper for us to appoint him as assessor not know ing what will happen in the case- before the court It could cause us some heartburn later It will not be long before the case will be dealt with It is a question that is best left alone We can consider him town assessor until we have a replacement Piercey executive direc tor of the Canadian Hospital as sociation who said In view of the trend toward greater auto mation in industry and the sub sequent shortening of the work week hospitals must follow suit But without being able to utilize machines to provide bedside care an increased staff is the only solution The hour week will not be long delayed for hos pital personnel in Ontario To fill present needs an addi tional graduate nurses are required Miss Thomas said bas ing these figures on a recent survey of the nursing personnel shortage in Canadian hospitals In addition nursing assist ants are required to fill present needs Shortages exist in other relat ed fields There are not suffi cient dietitians physiotherapists medicalsocial service workers laboratory technicians or medi cal record librarians Thanks Staff Miss Thomas expressed her ap preciation of Miss Grace Suttons work Her task was made more arduous during much of last year due to my enforced ab sence said Miss Thomas Praise for the work of all other members of the hospital staff was given by Miss Thomas She thanked the hospital board for its continued support In closing Miss Thomas said It is of benefit to look back to review what we have accom plished It is essential to look forward and plan for the future The lists of things we would wish for our hospitals are legion Some are long term and some are short term projects Some require capital funds others are in the field of organization and human relations If we resolve that this year our hospital will develop a more efficient organ ization become a quieter and safer place for patients and staff have more of the spirit of coop eration between all groups work ing in the institution and a closer integration with the com munity if we strive for these objectives and achieve some de gree of success then at the close of we shall he able to look back and know that it has been a year of great achievement Aurora Council Will Support Plan For Local Radio Station MEETING ENDORSED BY COUNCILLORS At the March meeting Aur ora council went on record as sup porting a local radio station to be located between Aurora and New market Council had approved the station last fall but its enthusiasm dropped at succeeding meetings Councillor William Davidson com mented that he had given the mat ter considerable thought since it first arose and now urged council to go active in its support of the station A letter from the minister of transport informed council that the matter was being reconsider ed Since no opportunity was af forded at their last hearing for those who wished to make repre sentations the cabinet requested another hearing so that those who were interested in the station could be heard Don Basset who heard the radio committee of the board of trade was one of three delegations pre sent He told council that the com mittee had considered the matter and were very much in favor of a station in the area and by that they meant a local station The feeling is that the closer to Aur ora the better he said Councillor William d a r asked if the whole board had gone on record as favoring the station- Mr Basset replied that a canvass of all the members had not been taken but he had been instructed by the president to express the feelings of the members of the radio committee William Haskctt who heads the local group stated that a limited stock company had been formed with money from the district There are seven men on the board of directors he said Two are from Aurora two are from Newmarket two are from the farm areas and am the seventh He added that the studio would be built where it was most feasi ble preferably on the highway between the two towns We are not opposing Richmond Hill he continued If the feels that Richmond Hill deserves a station well and good but feel that Aurora and Newmarket deserve one too It is a different trading area Mr added that while his group had not sought support for their station south of Aurora the Richmond John Graham representing the Richmond Hill group told council that the CBC had originally re commended their station for two reasons The CBC usually doesnt give its reasons for approving or denying an application but made an exception in this case where two areas were competing He said that the CBC felt that a stat ion in Richmond Hill would be on a better economic basis and that they preferred the program ming plans of his group There were 20 stockholders in The Aurora council endorsed the efforts of the Township of North York to convene a provin cialmunicipal conference to work out a fair division of responsibil ities and revenues A copy of the Hill group had gone all through letter has been sent to all this district as far north as Georg- in Ontario urging them to take action The government has been thinking along this basis fox some time said Councillor William Davidson A little prodding might get them moving I think we should go along with it said Reeve Clarence Da vis Mayor James Murray asked Councillor Davidson what he ex pected they would gain from such a conference An increase in educat ion grants for one thing replied Councillor Davidson adding that Page The Newmarket Era and Express Thursday March High School Overcrowded Need enrollment will overtax the accommodations of could be expected in the next five years Council was told that tentative who were all residents in York county or Toronto Ottawa is quite concerned over dissension which is growing because of this station and the whole thing may be given a hoist until after the election he warn ed There are indications that the other grants as well Councillor Bill Bailey then ask ed Mr Basset if the radio comm ittee had investigated the pro gramming plans of the local stat ion we have now He added that the King area was growing more rap idly than the rest CBC decides the best stat in three weeks may recommend ion on the basis of programming an independent board to hear replied Mr Basset The commit- plications feeling that it might J tee decided only on the basis of be better handled than by the the benefit to be derived from or the department of transport location It would be late fall or early win- Mr thin asked Mayor before the necessary James Murray to go to Ottawa as ion could be passed and a few spokesman for Aurora at no ex- months more before appointment to the town Mayor Murray would be made to the board approved of the idea share Mayor James Murray said that that a legislative grant would be I the three councils would have to available up to but not in excess meet to discuss the financial of 160000 leaving the remainder rangements be A station around here would of more benefit locally than one located in the Metro area remarked Davidson I move that the council go active in the matter He was supported by Councillor Child feel should go along with I the board of trade said Deputy- Mr Graham added that il was personal opinion that if no station were granted within the next three weeks that it would be a year or a year and a half be fore the area had its station The municipalities could best serve their interests by asking for a lic ense for the area There would bo less dissension if the Reeve Victor Jones lies recommended a station for York county only he said Mr Graham told council that il would be an expensive undertak ing Unless the station associates itself with all the municipalities I it will be a failure The question arose as to the Other applicant for a local station Edward Mr that he was a Toronto man who had appeared only once he- fore the Newmarket council and had never appeared before the
